I'm on my second x299 FTWK, RMA'd the first one. Both have the same problem. GPU does not work in PE2. Get a D6 post code. Have tried three different graphics cards of various generations (XFX 7950, EVGA GTS450, EVGA GTX1080). All work in PE3 or PE5 and run at 8x. BIOS is at 1.10. F5 optimal defaults. - I've run Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool. All checks pass.
- I've run IntelBurnTest. System is stable and error free.
- I've run Prime95, consuming 90% of physical RAM over several hours. No errors.
Intel 7820X Corsair Dominator Platinum, 4x8GB, DDR4 2666 in slots 1,3,5,7 EVGA GTX 1080 Reference (Founder's Edition) Samsung 960 Pro M.2 NVMe SSD 512GB Corsair AX860i PSU

What does D6 mean in the FTW manual? For Dark it means No Console Output Found. What is in what slot and connected to what displays when this happens?

With the card in PE2 does the PCI-Express LED for PE2 glow green, yellow, red, or is it just off?

D6 on FTWK means "No Console Output Found". I guess, same as the Dark. Is the same behavior for any of the 3 GPUs listed in the original post. No display.

For any of the cards listed in the original post, when in PE2, the debug lights are dark/off.

I've read here on the forums that not having a display connected will cause the d6 error. If you continue to have problems after hooking up a display... According to the ftwk manual... "PCI-Express LED for PE2. The LED will remain off when this PCI-E slot is disabled or unpopulated." So either the slot is disabled, or broken. Might want to see if you can enable/disable the PE2 slot inside the bios since the board doesn't have any pci-e disable switches. I'd also try all the older bios versions one at a time to see if one might help your problem.

What I meant by "no display" was, "even with the monitor connected, there is nothing on screen" Believe me I have already tried all permutations, with 3 different, known good and working GPUs of various vintages; with the factory BIOS 1.06 and with the BIOS flashed to the current version 1.10, with CSM enabled, with CSM disabled; with all PCIe slots set to auto and/or set to a specific speed based on what is installed in the slot. All GPUs work fine in slots PE3 and PE5. They run at 8x. Limitation of the 28 lane 7820X, I guess. PE2 is just dead.

When D6, GPUs in any other slots or only PE2 populated?

D6 only in PE2. No where else.

PE2 is not dead. PCI-E Lane Distribution (28 Lane SKX CPU’s) PE1 – x4 (Gen3, x4 lanes from PCH) PE2 – x16 (Gen3, x16 lanes from CPU, x8 shared with PE3) PE3 – x16 (Gen3, x8 lanes from CPU, shares 8 of PE2’s 16 lanes) PE4 – x16 (Not functional with a 28 lane processor.) PE5 – x16 (Gen3, x8 lanes from CPU) PE6 – x1 (Gen3, x1 lane from PCH) You are saying that the PCIe Slot Circled in Red Below is Not Working? What is the Slot showing while in the Bios Screen? If this is the case re-seat your CPU and check for bent CPU Socket Pins.

bcavnaugh PE2 is not dead.
In my case, PE2 is non-functional. I know it is not supposed to be, but it is. bcavnaugh
You are saying that the PCIe Slot Circled in Red Below is Not Working? Yes
bcavnaugh What is the Slot showing while in the Bios Screen?
PE2 appears to be active. All options are selectable (Auto, Gen1, Gen2, Gen3). Same as PE3, PE5. PE4, is grayed out, no options are selectable, like it is supposed to be on a 28 lane SkyLake-X
bcavnaugh If this is the case re-seat your CPU and check for bent CPU Socket Pins.
I've RMA'd one board already. It wasn't recognizing memory in slots 3 & 7, and slot PE2 was non-functional. This board doesn't have the memory issue, but the PE2 problem persists. Since the i7-7820X CPU passes all tests the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool throws at it, I'm at a loss for how to diagnose this problem. Unfortunately I purchased the i7-7820X about 6 months ago and just put it on the shelf. It's now well outside of any return window. So I've ordered an i9-7940X. It is scheduled to arrive this Saturday. Seems the only way I can determine whether the issue lies with the motherboard or the CPU is to use a different CPU.

You might want to use this from Intel https://click.intel.com/tuningplan/ You can still do this with your 6 Month CPU. I have used it twice and got back a CPU the same week. With your i9-7940X you may want to set AVX2 & AVX3 to 1 from 3 if you have good cooling.

I will look into this. Thanks for the info.
