Gibson Research has released a utility to show you if your system is protected, if there's a performance hit and also gives you the option to turn off Meltdown / Spectre protection. https://www.grc.com/inspectre.htm My Intel i7 920 is not vulnerable to Meltdown per the patch(es), vulnerable to Spectre and Performance says "slower."

Is Spectre/Meltdown even an issue for the X58 platform? I thought it was only more recent architecture..

My wife's Z97 Stinger Core3D is vulnerable to Spectre, but Meltdown is covered. Most recent BIOS update available is from 06/2015... hmm. Gigabyte laptop also vulnerable to Spectre, but Meltdown is covered. Most recent BIOS came out 07/2017. My ASUS Maximus IX Hero is fully covered after a BIOS update - a new one came out about 2 weeks ago. :)

Now Intel is advising not to install the update to address this issue. https://newsroom.intel.com/news/root-cause-of-reboot-issue-identified-updated-guidance-for-customers-and-partners/ As we start the week, I want to provide an update on the reboot issues we reported Jan. 11. We have now identified the root cause for Broadwell and Haswell platforms, and made good progress in developing a solution to address it. Over the weekend, we began rolling out an early version of the updated solution to industry partners for testing, and we will make a final release available once that testing has been completed. Based on this, we are updating our guidance for customers and partners:
- We recommend that OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors and end users stop deployment of current versions, as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior. For the full list of platforms, see the Intel.com Security Center site.
- We ask that our industry partners focus efforts on testing early versions of the updated solution so we can accelerate its release. We expect to share more details on timing later this week.
- We continue to urge all customers to vigilantly maintain security best practice and for consumers to keep systems up-to-date.
I apologize for any disruption this change in guidance may cause. The security of our products is critical for Intel, our customers and partners, and for me, personally. I assure you we are working around the clock to ensure we are addressing these issues. I will keep you updated as we learn more and thank you for your patience.

Based on the info from the link MSim posted above, I disabled the Spectre protection using the InSpectre tool, but left the Meltdown protection in place. I'll wait until Intel gets there stuff together before making any further changes.

Same Here! But now Microsoft is holding back the Patch we need, well some need. I also read somewhere that MS is only going to release the Patch needed on the Fall Creator Update.

IMO I don't think one would need to worry about the rebooting bug if you have the patches installed and running and you system doesn't exhibit the unexpected reboots. Intel has stated there are several Intel chip models that are reportedly experiencing rebooting issues including its second-generation Sandy Bridge, third-generation Ivy Bridge, sixth-generation Skylake, and seventh-generation Kaby Lake models in addition to the original stated Haswell and Broadwell chip models but don't specifically say witch iteration of microprocessors are effected. I can tell you I have all the patches and my system is not exhibiting the unexpected reboots at all hell yesterday I had my system up for nineteen hours and was running as expected. But you got to love it they say patch your systems ASAP .. than NO! Stop don't do it! Wait. We messed up. But go ahead and keep your system update. And we will keep working on making everything okay ... we think. 🤔 Edit: I see the Lenovo Security Advisory LEN-18282 page now says "Updating - temporarily unavailable " (that's was the BIOS I'm running now) under the CLIENT SYSTEMS for my IdeaCentre 700 system. So don't know what to make of that?

+1. It does seem that Intel rushed out the new code to fast without enough thorough testing due to the panic...

Thanks. I'm looking for that info out of curiousity, but I still feel Intel should have slowed down a bit and did some further testing on all platforms before releasing it to be made public. Maybe I'll change my viewpoint after I read what Intel reported about AMD's documentation.
