I'm building a new rig and wondering: should I buy an NVme SSD or just use my Samsung SSD I have in my rig currently? Heard SSD to NVme is not big deal.

I use a Samsung 950 NVME as boot, office, and games... all load much faster. Backups are much faster as well as the shadow disk ie VSS is crazy fast. I do backup to my older SSD Sata III

Is it worth spending $223 bux -- I just bought a 850 Pro not too long ago.

I might research lifespan/durability between the two to help make a decision.(not sure if there's a difference) And from what ive read, it seems desired use plays a large role as well. If your just gaming, surfing the web, or netflix etc. a fast ssd will probably be all you need. And you would'nt see a large difference between the two, aside from a few seconds off your loading screens. Just from what i've read it seems nvme favors those who do task like photo editing, or making videos, uploading large files etc. Personally i've had systems with both styles as boot disk, and did'nt really see a vast difference like when comparing a standard hdd vs a ssd. If you have the money and like having the latest tech go for it. technically it will be an improvement. It's just whether you want to pay that much for a minimal difference in everyday use. That being said, i am mainly a gamer and watch alot of videos on my rig. I am currently using a nvme (samsung 960 pro) in my computer as the boot drive. :P But being that i built a high end rig, did'nt make since to not shove one in there. I also have a ssd, and have games installed on both nvme, ssd, and rarely played games on installed on a hdd. I never notice differences between the ssd, nvme, but defiantly notice when i start a game up off the hdd.

my experiences are the same as bdogg454 - it's certainly not a night and day difference between an ssd and nvme drive like moving from a hdd. if you don't need it, I'd wait til the prices inevitably come down lower. the nvme does make for a cleaner build tho.

I may just spurge and get a 960 EVO; merely on principal of having latest and clean design.

If you move alot of large files, i would research the difference between the 960 evo and pro. The one main difference i found out with large files is that after a set limit of data is moved the evo actually slows down it's transfer rate, while the pro is unregulated on its transfer speed no matter how large of a file your moving. but that being said, unless you move large files alot, and do photo/video editing, you won't see a difference in the evo vs pro. Except the price lol... Just something to consider, also the length of the warranty and expected lifespan between the two models is different as well i believe.

I'll take look--it's merely gaming rig--I do little video on it but it's mostly kill videos that I might edit and throw up. I do some photoshop work; but again it's small. Lot of that is done on my mechanical drive that I use for storage.

Keeping things to a simple perspective, leaving cost aside, as you mention nvme as an option clearly funds are not an issue. A nvme drive should be noticeably quicker with some tasks. It's a pay to play game my friend and how deep you're willing to get into your own pockets. You mention you already have a Samsung SSD, which are fast enough by most peoples standards, but on the contrary, if the thought of an nvme drive really interests you & you want more of the bleeding edge tech, my vote is you go with an NVME drive, at least then you can judge first hand

If you do large file transfers, you will notice a difference using NVme, gaming and booting up windows, it will be hard to notice a difference.

I’ve decided since money isn’t an issue; I’m going to get one just to say I have it. It also makes me like fact I don’t need to run SATA cable to something LOL.

the main difference between the evo and pro is the pro has a larger cache buffer thus allowing for higher sustained writes and reads and the pro is rated for more writes in its lifespan, evo 3yr warranty and 100~200~400TBW depending on capacity were the pro is 5yr warranty and 400TBW 800TBW and 1.2PBW of writes, which are very conservative ratings. if you are using it for a server or heavy workload workstation then go pro other wise the evo will be just fine, the larger capacity drives are a bit faster. they do get warm under heavy use but a m.2 cooler from ek will fix that

Definitely go with an Nvme boot drive. Sata speeds are capped much slower than current SSDs. Thus Nvme tech came about. You can get a good one for under $100. I bought an Intell 256gb for under $100 for my new build. Windows pops up in about 2 seconds after boot screen goes away.

Nvme here, same boat going into my Z270 build this last year. I like the one last cable look, transfer speed across the board is much better. I did do some testing like everyone else and loaded Steam, Origin, and games to my Nvme and ran load times and general game play. Then I did the same with my Crucial ssd and the loads and gameplay were nearly identical in my case.

I ended up buying one just for the heck of it. My only issue now is that I'm definitely going to have SATA cable I think. I need a 1TB drive that just stores files and stuff for backup. I was going to use USB 3.0 cradle for it but I heard it's not worth that and you should just plug it directly into the motherboard. Then again; I'm thinking--drive is only for back up files. I don't use it for anything but storing things like videos, graphics, game file backups, old photos, etc.

I was thinking about that too! I will most likely just plug the drive in -- at least it'll run faster, be monitored, and will spin down when not in use--whereas USB enclosure it's always on.

Another thought completely away from speed or usage is going NVME will free up the physical drive bay. Allowing you to put an additional drive in your rig if you should have a need for that. I have a separate server that I run Plex on and an additional bay would be welcomed.

I've gone with a 3hd build.
256gb nvme as boot and essentials. 500gb ssd for games and non-essentials 4tb for storage.
I can attest that booting thru nvme is just pure lightning. And I highly recommend it.

Personally, I don't notice that much of a difference between my normal SSDs and my NVMe 960 EVO. NVMe SSDs are pretty cool though. One benefit of the NVMe SSD is that it doesn't take up any usable space in your case, and there aren't any cables to manage.

I went from an 850 Evo to a 960 Evo as my boot drive. I agree with anyone else who said it's not that big of a difference (in normal consumer stuff). Windows doesn't boot up any faster (certainly not instant) and maybe some games on it would be faster but... it costs like $130 for 230 GBs of actually usable NVMe space right now. AAA games can easily be like 50-60 GBs each. On top of whatever space is being used by Windows and your main applications. It's ridiculously expensive to try and use NVMe for modern gaming, imo, when you probably wouldn't notice much difference going with a normal SSD for half the price per GB.
