BIOS 1.06/1.07/1.08 Updates (Spectre)

  • Update CPU microcode for Intel Security.
  • Improve Thermal Performance (SC17 1070 and SC17 1070 4KG only)
This BIOS is intended to update the CPU microcode to increase security related to the reported Spectre vulnerability for processors used on EVGA SC15 and SC17 Laptops.  This microcode update is expected to be used in conjunction with related patches from your Operating System or VMM to ensure complete protection from reported vulnerabilities.

Windows Installation
  • Download the correct .zip file below for your motherboard:
         768-41-2633-T1 - EVGA SC17 1080 - v1.06
         768-41-2633-T1 - EVGA SC17 1070 4KG - v1.07
         758-41-2633-T1 - EVGA SC17 1070 - v1.07
         758-21-2633-T1 - EVGA SC17 980m - v1.08
         516-34-1833-T1 - EVGA SC15 1060 - v1.06
  • First go into your BIOS and load defaults, save and exit.
  • Close all open programs.
  • Go into the folder where you unzipped this package and double-click update.bat
  • Press Y to start the flash process.
  • DO NOT TURN OFF POWER OR RESET DURING THE FLASH PROCESS
  • After the flashing is finished, the system will automatically shut down. Then power on again and go into BIOS to setup.
  • NOTE: If flash box immediately closes after flash attempt, the flash may need to be run from a CMD prompt with administrator privileges or DOS version.

BIOS Installation
  • Extract the contents of .zip file to USB flash drive (must be formatted as FAT32)
  • Reboot the machine and go into the system BIOS
  • From the BIOS, navigate to the Save & Exit tab and open "Select BIOS File."
  • Select the .bin file you wish to flash.

[Note - These BIOS updates were originally uploaded on 4/16.  There have been no releases since 4/16.]

Haven't noticed any....my cinebench R15 actually went up from 980 to 986 at 4.4GHz.  Haven't compared other benchmarks though.

Sorry, I should of posted 4.1GHz scores.  The power limit of 60W is controlled by the EC and it not possible to alter it, even with XTU or Throttlestop or MMIO.  The only method possible is not advisable, because the PL limit is by design, and altering it any way may brick and or damage your machine and will void your warranty.

I've got windows most recent windows cumulative update and just installed this v1.07 980m bios.

Both tests I've run show my system is still vulnerable to Spectre.

    Any ideas??

Thanks, I'll have our laptop team look into this.  If anyone else is having similar issues with the SC17 980M or other laptops showing a vulnerability, please let me know.

@Callum: one more question - did you confirm that the BIOS was updated?  Does it show v1.07 in the laptop BIOS?

Callum and mark, can you confirm that you have KB4056892 installed?  The image posted above is cutoff from the update numbers.

If so, can you please run the PowerShell commands shown in this article to check to see whether it's a firmware or OS patch the system is waiting for:

Meltdown is patched entirely by Windows Updates.  Spectre requires both the correct Windows Update and the firmware to fully patch it.  It's possible you might not have the entire update.

Please note that depending on your AntiVirus, Windows may have stopped providing the updates unless you've updated a registry key.  The information is contained in the link I posted above.  Please carefully read that and backup your registry before making any changes.

Thanks Callum.  Our BIOS team is looking into this.

Edit:  Our BIOS team determined that we'll need to release a new BIOS to resolve this for these motherboards:

    SC17 980M
    SC17 1070
    SC17 1070 4K G-SYNC

I'll update this when we these are updated.  In the meantime, I'll be removing these BIOS files from download.  There's no expected harm from flashing your BIOS to these, if you have, but they won't resolve the issue they were posted for in the first place.

Sorry, if you grabbed it from from this page, that was a fail on my part.  The new BIOS is version 1.08, not 1.05.  Edited the OP, and the correct BIOS is now linked above (and corrected a typo on the SC17 1070 4KG).

I had our CS team verify with a 980m laptop, and version 1.08 passes both Meltdown and Spectre tests now.

Is it possible to have the option to enable the "Fn" key by default ? I mean I would love that nobody uses Function keys anymore ?

this is one of the few things that I don't like about the laptop that and there is no HDD Led activity :'( why not make the power button LED do that ?

I am wondering, since Intel said to stop installing the buggy patch and wait for a better fix, when they do issue the updated firmware, will you guys update our machines as well to the newer firmware update?  Not that I have encountered any of the issues.

Re: EVGA Laptops BIOS Update with Spectre updates 2018/02/03 07:08:06 (permalink)
    HEY!!

Your links are bad.  I just downloaded the "768-41-2633 - EVGA SC17 1070 4K G-SYNC - v1.05" file, restarted the laptop, set BIOS defaults, booted, made sure no other programs were running, and successfully performed the flash.  It then rebooted my laptop, and now it is pretty much junk.  The laptop is now extremely slow, barely boots, keyboard doesn't work, mousepad doesn't work, wifi doesn't work, ethernet doesn't work, and it won't enter the BIOS screen.

So, what's the problem?  Your link for "768-41-2633 - EVGA SC17 1070 4K G-SYNC - v1.05" actually downloads the file "SC15_1060_flashtool_105" instead of "SC17_1070_4KG_flashtool_105".  I am trying to download the correct file and attempting to flash the correct file using a memory stick, external keyboard, and external mouse.

    Wish me luck!

Major screw-up on EVGA's part, and screw-up on my part for trusting EVGA and not reading the file names.

After the slowest flash ever, which took approximately 15 minutes to complete due to the laptop's terrible performance when operating with the incorrect firmware, I was able to successfully flash the correct firmware back onto this laptop and it is now working properly again.

    EVGA, fix your links!!!!!

EDIT:  I figured out the bigger problem.  The first 3/4 of the SC17 4K Gsync link is the wrong file and the last 1/4 is the correct file.  It looks like one big link, but it is actually two separate links.  Depending on where you click the link, you will get the correct or incorrect file.

    Frustrating!!
