Hello everyone,

I am building a mining rig with 8x 1070 SC GPUs. To power the system, I'll be using 2x Supernova 750 G2's. I've chosen to install 8x 6-pin powered risers and am unclear as to what the best way is to power them.

The scenarios I have in mind are the following:

a) Connect the 6-pin SATA outputs from the PSU's using the included SATA cables (2 risers per cable). The SATA cables would connect to SATA/6-pin adapters which came with the risers. I've read that it's a big no-no to connect 6-pin to SATA/6-pin adapters. Not sure if how much risk there is here.

b) Buy 8x "8-pin to 2x 8-pin (6+2)" splitters and power 1 GPU + 1 riser per VGA 6-pin output cable.

Which of the 2 options above is ideal? I'm looking for the best option to minimize the risk of burning my house down! If there is a better solution than the 2 above, I'd definitely appreciate the feedback.

Thanks!

honestly i would avoid the sata to 6 pin method as technically a PCI-e slot can draw up to 75W of power and it is over the rating of a sata connection. that being said many people still do this with lower power draw cards and get away with it.

as for those splitters you have to be very careful with these as some will cross wires on the connections and can fry your hardware. you can use this method and it will work just fine, but i would most definitely verify the pinout before i apply power to any device.

Sata to 6 pin is a great way to ensure the fire department makes a free trip to your house.  Use proper 6 pin cables, or molex if you are going to use adapters.  Your second option is the better option as 8 pin is meant for 150 watts and 6 pin is meant for 75.  So it is a lot safer.  Not the best option, but much much safer.  People do use sata adapters all the time and say "I check the cables every day and they are never warm" and still we see stories of people having their houses burn down, or rigs melting, or cards just burning.  Don't cheap out :)

That is what I would suggest.  Unless QuintLeo has anything to offer, as honestly, he has almost as many rigs as Chris haha.

IMO, based on my 5 card rigs running on Seasonic X-850 power supplies:

Run the boards from the VGA power ports.
Run the risers from MOLEX via the peripheral/SATA ports (EVGA confirmed in a thread somewhere that those ports ARE interchangeable on the G2/P2/T2 series just like they are on the Seasonic X-series).

PCI-E slot on a riser technically can pull somewhat OVER 75 watts - 75 for the rated limit on the actual PCI-E slot PLUS losses due to voltage conversion on the riser (likely another 5-10 watts, possibly as high as 15).
SATA power connector is only rated for 54 watts of 12 VDC draw - 3 pins at 1.5 amps each (that spec is quoted from Molex, but I've seen the same spec on a couple other manufacturer sites).

You MIGHT get away with using SATA to power a riser, especially if you don't run the card on it anywhere near max TDP - but it's not a safe or sane bet if the GPU is rated for more than about 50 watts TDP.

ALSO, EVGA has said somewhere that the SATA/Peripheral ports are only rated for 75 watts - and the WIRING for those ports is pretty much NEVER heavy duty enough to support *2* risers per port on the PS anyway.
Stick with one riser per PS port for safety.

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

interesting comments about the power supply. glad i decided to keep my test build on the VGA 6pin power cables themself.

I don't get why people go to a subforum and flame the participants...can't you just avoid it if you are not interested?

I regularly visit these threads since the exact same info can be used to configure my folding/crunching rigs with multiple GPUs.
Should I get another job or can i use this helpful info to increase my donation to science/medicine?

Some people just get upset and see those who mine as scapegoats for the sheer greed that the video card cartels and retailers are using to extort end users.

EVGA encourages people to fold at home, they host one of the worlds largest teams and give them EVGA bucks to do so.
They (EVGA) encourages people to overclock the cards by giving them the software to overclock them.
Maybe gamers should buy a xbox or a playstation, systems that were designed to play games.
Playing games on a computer load and unload the GPU, causing the temps to go up and down, up and down.
Temp cycles are not really good for electronics, I would by from a miner or folder before a gamer any day.

Easiest solution would be to just use molex off the perif cables. I use that every time, not a single problem.

Got a used >=8gb GPU that you'd like to sell? PM me
