I have a 1000D Corsair now but that is a very big chassis. Still Corsair is a brand I highly recommend.

Well, no, I havent owned the Lian Li.
But looking at it, it doesnt seem to be able to do triple radiators, and wasnt that one of the things you wanted to do?
Also, you can do a single rad out the back, there is enough room.
Heck, you could even mod the front and side panel to accept any water cooling you want.
But, like I said, it is BIG. But, its nice to be able to build in a case you dont have to contort your body, hands, fingers, etc just to get 1 screw in.
Good luck with your build.

Oh I guess I'm confused, up above you replied that it was the best case you'd ever owned.  Hmm no I wasn't planning on doing triple radiators unless you mean a 360 i.e. triple fan.  My understanding on the O11 though is it actually can fit triple rads if someone want.  Side, top, bottom. Yeah I just double checked their site specifically calls out 3x360mm rads being possible.  No idea why someone would need that unless they're trying to build a super silent rig though using low rpm fans.  I think at this point it's down to......

Phanteks:
Evolv X
Enthoo Luxe 2 (if it comes out soon)

Lian Li
PC-O11 Dynamic

Ah, nevermind me then, I thought you wanted triple rads, not triple fans.
I have a nice, medium case, with triple rads in front (no space for hdds though at front), 2 or 3 up top, and 1 at the backtop. Keeps my 2 2080's in sli cool. Also has room for 2 hdd/ssd on back, and 2 up front, with psu hidden.
I dont know what its called, but it came with my ABS machine, and has all glass all around it.

As for 3 triple rads, I can see:
32  core cpu = 1 3x radiator
1 RTX titan = 1 3x radiator
1 RTX titan = 1 3x radiator
PLUS fans to cool the ssd/hdd's and help move the minimal heat from low airflow spots.

I would go for that lian li if it has 3 front fans and 3 top fans available. Be a good, solid, cool case to run a system in. And, smaller than my Thor V-2 (just called Thor now), but I will STILL never give away, sell, or get rid of the Thor case, it is THAT good.
Sounds like I 'might' trade it for that lian li case though. Mmmmmmmm, back inthe day with my custom cooling, on all 3, cpu, gpu, and mobo nb/sb. :)

Yeah the O11 Dynamic has support for a 360 on the side (front is a pane of glass), top, and bottom.  Then of course the usual exhaust fan area over the rear I/O panel.  Just in case you're not sure which case I'm talking about http://www.lian-li.com/pc-o11-dynamic/

Ugh now I'm adding the Phanteks P600S to my list of potentials.  It doesn't have RGB but eh whatever.  The internals are based on an Evolv X but I think it's supposed to be a little bit shorter, more mid-tower where the Evolv I guess is pushing full tower.  The top and front panels can be pulled off to expose filtered but open sections to enhance air flow as needed and have cloth filter material like the upcoming Enthoo Luxe 2.

LOL I'm starting to realize why I never change my case.  This will literally be my 3rd case in 15 years or so, and I've had the HAF-X since 2010.  I'm really tempted to do the Lian Li for the two sided glass open look, but if I do I absolutely can't use it until I spend a bunch more $$ on my planned water setup and also to get some intake or exhaust fans since it comes with zero fans out of the box.  If I go with one of the Phanteks cases I could actually fit the current stuff into it if I wanted to.  The raised mobo platform in the Lian Li just doesn't allow my Noctua cooler to fit.

I think I'm down to the P600S vs the H500M since the Evolv X just isn't as good at potential airflow with those front and top panels.

I am partial to my X31 TG. It has plenty of room for large radiators, features tempered glass, and has space for my blu-ray drive.

For me, the best selling point was the customizability and ease of cleaning.

I am air-cooling for now, but it's super quiet due to the two 200mm fans on top and one up front. You can mount a 280mm rad in front and still keep two cd-drives installed. I don't use the HDD cages, so there's no shortage of circulation.

There's plenty of space for cable management, and I got it for a great price (sub-$100).

Re: what to replace a HAF-X with? 2019/03/20 10:05:18 (permalink)
So I'm seriously leaning towards the H500M but I might have a problem.  One of the benefits of that is supposed to be those huge dual 200mm fans.  I'm going watercooling.  Whatever water stuff I go with is going to come with fans.  Either an Alphacool eissbaer "AIO" or an eissturm kit.

I plan on putting the rad in the front based on some tests I've seen where front intake rad with a GPU that exhausts into the case like the ACX/ICX non-blower style GPU's  resulted in a much cooler CPU vs sucking hot case air through a top mounted rad.  Even if I get a 280mm rad I don't think the included fans would push nearly as much air especially with a rad in front and I'm assuming I would move the 200's to the top where they'll then be creating negative pressure and trying to pull air in through everywhere.  Would it work to maybe leave the 200's, mount the rad in front behind them, and put the included 2x120 or 2x140 in the top or ditch them and put something else up top?  Not sure how well the 200's would work with a rad.

Well, I might have found an answer.  I was wondering about doing a push pull with leaving the 200's in place and the fans that come with the kits on the inside pulling.  I found a build video where someone did just that.  The only thing I'm not sure about is if I'd create dead air somehow since the 200's push 90cfm and the Alphacool fans are around 70.

Also ordered a new side panel and rear panel fan for the HAF-X since the bearings are shot and they make a ton of noise when you first turn the system on if it's been off for a bit (usually only when I'm doing maintentance).  That was more expensive than expected, but last time I actually bought case fans 80mm was the size and they were a lot cheaper lol.  I just went with what I think is the stock basic fans.  Grabbed the part #'s from CM's website and looked them up on Amazon (Newegg was similar but not in stock or 3rd party resellers and I'm not sure about those).

Will do.  I'm not going to be actually building for a little bit still.  I only have the case and no other parts.  I might move the current stuff in temporarily just to check the QC on the case but we'll see.  Probably won't do that.  It'll be more fun to do the new build in a clean case lol.

Amazon sucks

They had a shipping delay and it won't be here until Monday now.

Their error is my win though, they did a 15% refund as compensation.  At least the new fans for the HAF-X showed up and I can finally fix that problem.  The side panel has actually been messed up and grindy when first turned on for probably 6-7 of the 9 years I've had the thing. Tap it a few times once it warmed up a little and it was fine.  The rear 140 has started doing it recently though and that one is way worse.  When the side panel started doing it I actually thought it was brushing on a ripple or something in the filter mesh thing but figured out that wasn't the case after I removed it and it still did it.

Beauty of a case! My only gripe with cases these days is lack of 5.25" bays..yeah, I know not many use them anymore, but I do.

And honestly, why not make a place for them with a removable tray...that way if you don't want them you don't have them, but if you
do want them, you can ...

Beauty of a case! My only gripe with cases these days is lack of 5.25" bays..yeah, I know not many use them anymore, but I do.

And honestly, why not make a place for them with a removable tray...that way if you don't want them you don't have them, but if you
do want them, you can ...

+1.  I couldn't agree more...

Yeah I haven't decided what I'm going to do there.  As you see the current system has a drive, but the new one I'm not sure if I'll get an external or what.  I don't think I actually need a drive anymore for any software just ripping my discs once in a while.  Since I'm planning to keep the old parts though, it's not like I couldn't do that in the old system though.

EVGA 1000W PSU was a tight fit in this case. - case has that slanted front wall sealing the PSU compartment

Ugh, so I got mostly everything moved over finally last night.  I don't know what the size is on that PSU, but my Corair HX850 is just a big enough square to hold a 140mm fan in the bottom.  That was a tight fit too in that PSU area.  Why on earth did CM decide that a slanted PSU shroud was a good idea?

Also ran into a new problem.  Apparently I need to replace my nice angled SSD data cables with the standard straight connector.  I had to bend the wire pretty good to get one on the bottom slot in the 2x3.5 HDD bracket.  It was the only place I could put my SSD because of those cables.  The only other spot that had clearance was the rear SSD mount on top of the PSU shroud.  Until I put the PSU in and it blocked off the "front" part of the opening :(.

It probably doesn't help the cable management issue that my old HX850 is only partially modular and has an extra PCIE cable I don't need that has to be stuffed somewhere.  I'm definitely going full modular next time and unfortunately I think I just added about $180 to my new build because I'm probably going to do custom length cablemods cables now to make management easier on the new build.

Mod the case - cut that "special" angled cover out - is also an option.

If there is any doubt I would slit a rubber hose & use it as an edge guard after cutting the metal - so you do not damage your power cables.

Can the 90 end for SSD be on the MB side ?

Nope, same issue since the MB side is horizontal connectors and the cable would bump into the metal mobo tray area.  I'll just go get new cables.  These ones are actually just the ones that came with my board so no real loss.  Then I could put the SSD in a nicer spot too.

Managed to finish the transplant.  Picked up a couple of SATA cables that were straight plugs on both ends.  Moved the SSD to the mounts between the front fans and the mobo as well.   Smoke check passed and everything is working fine including the beta software for controlling the ARGB controller via USB.  Not sure about my 1070 since I haven't really paid attention to temps in recent months, though it didn't seem to be abnormally cool or hot, but the CPU actually seems slightly cooler running after running ROG realbench on it. Since I lost two fans and a bunch of airspace vs. the HAF-X I wasn't sure what to expect.  I did also switch from MX-3 to MX-4 paste when I did the move though which I'm guessing had an impact.  I'll check it again tomorrow when the system has fully heated up to normal idle temps.

Yep.  In the end my CPU seems to have ended up about 5C cooler.  Not sure if it's the thermal paste change (MX-3 to MX-4, both were fresh applications) or the different airflow in the case vs the HAF-X (stock fans in both cases) or a combo but I used to cap with a spike of around 82C according to RealBench after 15-30 minutes of running.  Now it's like 77-78.  That's all cores clocked to 4.4, stock is 4.0 with 4.4 on a single core boost.

I'm working on putting together a water setup for it now.  I want to put the radiator in the top, but not sure what I'll end up with.  A 45mm 360 would be nice, but CM lists 43 as the max clearance.  I think a 45 would fit depending on the mobo.  My Maximus VII Formula for instance I think there's clearance to my RAM, but the VRM heatsink which is a hybrid air/water combo stock I think sticks up a little too tall and is too close to the edge.  Not sure a 45 would fit.
