Hello.
I have the Titan X (maxwell), on Win 8.1.
I just put in a 9800GT video card, to try to get the 9800GT to be the physx card.
I went into the bios before booting up, and made sure it was seen.
I booted to windows, and the card is NOT seen.
I can not choose it as a physx source.
I can not see it in the device manager list (although when I set See Hidden Devices, another Titan X appears, looking like I have 2 Titan X's, which I dont).
I did a 'Search for new hardware', and nothing.
I rebooted, and nothing.

Has anyone come across this issue, and if so, how did you resolve it?
Any tips to try to get it seen?

Thanks.

Edit:
I installed 9000 series drivers, and the card was found and the physx for the card also.
I tried installing JUST the TitanX drivers, but it still only shows the Titan X as the only available PhysX device, and there is no heat coming from the 9800GT when playing a game.

The graphics driver for a Titan X doesn't have support for a 9800 GT, and vice-versa..You need a 400 series or newer card to work with it..See the 'Supported Products' tab of your NVIDIA driver.

Thanks Bob.
I dont see anywhere a 'supported drivers' on that nvidia page.
But, I do have a GTX580, so I will pop that in instead.
:)

I just want to see if I get a little more performance or not.

You're welcome..You have to select a driver and go to the driver page..There you'll see the 'Supported Products' tab for the driver, along with the 'Release Highlights' and 'Additional Information' tabs.

Good to know info. Also I doubt you would see any gains using that 9800GT for PhyX. I added a 3rd card (760SC) with my 970 SLI and set it as stand alone PhysX, did not notice any significant gains so I removed it.

What Bob was getting is the 9800 GT is in legacy status and is not supported in the current active driver branch. If you read the release notes for the drivers, they list the supported products. It's possible to modify the driver to recognize your 9800 GT but, but hard to say if it would work and it would probably actually reduce PhysX performance in games. The GTX 580 might give you a decent bump in PhysX titles. I used one (580) with a TITAN SC then the TITAN SC took over PhysX with the 980 Ti...now the 980 Ti is PhysX for the 1080 Ti... It really depends upon if you're going to get any use out of it on what games you play.

OK, thanks for all the info!
Really good to know.

I put in the 580, and set it to dedicated physx.

I play a LOT of different games, and most of them use physx, so I hope this will put some of the stress OFF of the Titan X, so it wont get so hot and struggle with frame drops (thats what I am hoping for anyway).

So, off to game and see if it works or not!

Sigh.
PhysX works REALLY good.

But, it didnt make a difference with the Titan X, in terms of taking the load off of it and it being better for it, nope.
As soon as the Titan X reaches 60C, it just seems to go to crud, no matter what (and this time, with the 580 taking over PhysX, the Titan X didnt go over 66.111 Cm and it STILL started doing the bad popin and hitching thing..
Just ridiculous.

BUT, the 580 was a success, even if the very bad Titan X cant even pull the weight of a 780.

Look into water cooling it like I did both of my 970's with a Corsair H60.
I may not have seen a difference in PhysX when I added the 760 because I have two 970's and probably had plenty of bandwidth already for that.

Re: Trying to use older video card for physX, but not working 2017/12/28 12:32:24 (permalink)
Nope, already water cooled one before, and it makes NO difference whatsoever. See my thread here:
https://forums.evga.com/Titan-X-not-going-pcie-3x-anymore-2nd-card-m2632748.aspx

But, I did say the 580 made a difference, and it does!
I am actually seeing lots of stuff in 3d now, instead of 2d with drawings on them, or 3d objects that look like they are flat (the Titan X makes ALL video games of mine look like most things are in 2d instead of 3d).
So, at least my games look 5x better than they did before, and actually have 3d in them.
I always wondered why my games never looked as good as other peoples games screenshots did, but now I know why: Yet another thing wrong with the Titan X
Funny, putting the 580 in makes the games look like they are supposed to.
But, again, evgay will say its all my fault, instead of their cruddy Titan, even with the MOUNTAIN of insurmountable proof that it is the titan x's fault.

Umm, what?! The 3D looked less 3D until you water cooled it? I am not going to try to figure out what you think you saw. Water cooling makes it cooler in temperature. It has nothing to do with the image on your screen. Settings change that. Whatever you changed after water cooling affected the image's appearance.

He is saying screenshots taken by his gtx 580 look better than screenshots taken by his maxwell titan x.

No, he is saying things look better now with the 580 as a physx card with the Titan X as the main card.
Things looked 2d WITHOUT the 580.
Now they look 3d WITH the 580 as the physx card.

I think there is a setting missing or the motherboard has an issue with the Titan.

You have someone you trust you can send the Titan to so they can test it in their system and see if the card works good?
Something is just not right here.

Yep, thats what I am saying.
I do have someone who I trust, but I would have to ship it to hom. He is a friend in another state.
And I have 0 money.
He is the one I was going to trade my 770 for his 780, and sell the titan, because ALL of my video cards work fine in this system EXCEPT the titan. I have 3 8800GT's, 1 9800GT, 1 580GTX, 1 770GTX, and 1 780GTX, and they all work and play fine (well, not 'fine' with the old cards with new games, but you know what I mean).
The 780 ALMOST beats out the titan in a LOT of my newer games, and it shouldnt.
Also, it LOOKS right in games, where the titan x does not.

And yes, everything LOOKS right, with the titan x as primary and the 580 as secondary physx only. (take away the 580 physx, and things go back to looking flat again).
I was thinking it might be an evga precisionx or msi afterburner setting, and thats why I wanted to try a modded bios with the fan speeds only, but JUST having the 580 in makes the system looks gorgeous again, just like it 'should' have the whole time, and msi afterburner IS installed still, so its not a setting of that or precisionx, so I have no idea whats going on.

Time to document the difference, while showing which card is running, with your cell phone's camera and provide the evidence to EVGA?

If you only have the Titan installed, have physx set to CPU in the Nvidia and play games
Then set physx to GPU/Titan and play the same games.
As compared to the 580 as the physx card. Is it only good with the 580 installed?

Can you post screen shots so we can see what you're seeing?

Re: Trying to use older video card for physX, but not working 2017/12/29 10:07:09 (permalink)
Not today.
The last 2 days wore me out bad (and all I did was sit in my computer chair).
I will be in bed all day.

But, I was thinking that maybe because I installed older drivers (382.xx), then installed the 388.00 drivers (because some games would not play with the older drivers at all), and THEN I installed the 580 drivers over both of them just to get physx working, THEN installed the 388.00 drivers AGAIN over the gtx580 drivers, so now it has all 3 drivers on the system, maybe that kicked something in with the titan ? (see pics attached for drivers installed).

Either that, or I am thinking that the 580 as dedicated physx has made the titan spend less wattage and heat on the vrm's (and, the heat showing is less than w/o the 580, so this may pan out as the truth). The titan is now showing only 66C as top top heat now, instead of 81c or 85c.

When I feel better, I will remove the 580, and see if the titan still runs that cool, and if the games look good or not. If they dont, I will set the titan as physx, then if it doesnt look good, I will try the cpu as physx.

Funny how all this started around the time the 1000 series drivers came out though, and putting back an older card with its older drivers makes it work? Just me musing though, dont know anything for sure. And, installing pre-1000 drivers now with only the titan doesnt do anything at all, so....

So, will get back to this hopefully tomorrow, maybe the next day.
It sucks being hamstrung by your own body for doing anything. :(
