We have Acura TL 2009 and it's closing in on 100K.
Manual code "2" says:
"5 Speed Automatic SH-AWD with Technology Package - Recommended service:
◾Replace spark plugs
◾Replace timing belt and inspect
water pump
If you drive regularly in very high temperatures (over 110°F,
43°C),
or in very low temperatures (under -20°F, -29°C), replace every
60,000
miles (U.S.)/ 100,000 km (Canada).
◾Inspect valve
clearance
◾Independent of the maintenance messages in the
multi-information
display, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.
◾Inspect
idle speed every 160,000 miles (256,000 km).
◾Adjust the valves during
service 3 if they are noisy."

Called Acura dealer and they wanted almost $1,500.00 for these services:
- Replace - Timing belt, water pump, drive belts, spark plugs, tensioner.

Code 2 hasn't shown up yet but that is a lot of money.  Is it really necessary to replace all those at 100k?  Can we drive it for another 20-30K or something?  I've read online somewhere that some people have driven their cars to 150-160k. Thank you!

yes, dont wait to go much over that, those honda engines have very tight tolerances and belt stretch or worse yes break will destroy your engine. i used to do mine at 80k, and my mitsubishi 3000gt every 60k.

    lol...

'''Called Acura dealer and they wanted almost $1,500.00 for these services: ''   on line I see cost from 450 to 1000$  , but cost of there living keeps going up

this is why cars are so much better today   why on earth do I want a car like  they use to be where I could go to napa and do all the woke myself on a Saturday    heck I bet that timing case cover takes every bit of 2 days to tare down just to get to it to work on  @ 25 bucks a hr.  then they got 1/2 a day changing the bely and another  2 days reassembling the rest .

my buddies wife has a a jap something 2015   and you got to remove the fender wells  to get to the spark plugs   my old pick up   just reach right in and get them out  maybe a 1 hr job  not like todays stuff it a 12 hr job just to get to them

don't look that hard to do and the water pump  the cost is getting down to it   removing everything in the way in a tight cramped space .   that's where most of your labor costs are .

thig is if you let it go  like the guy above said you can bend a valve   [out of time and valve drops on piston  when it shold be closed  [ then how much will it cost you ??? $$$$ ]

The dealer going to be way more expensive than a normal shop. I would start searching for reputable auto shop to take the vehicle to. Ask friends who they trust.

I wouldn't wait too long before doing the timing belt.

    +1

After buying a repair book and watching some YouTube videos, I changed my Honda Civic's timing belt and water pump on a Saturday.

But I have also replaced an Accord clutch in the past, replaced the piston rings in one of my old Jettas, replaced the timing belt in a different Honda and in a Toyota, and replaced the head gasket in my Civic more recently, so it definitely depends on your ability.

Find a friend or family member who is competent and willing, and you can save a bunch of money. Or, take it to a reputable non-dealership shop as mentioned.

If you don't replace your timing belt, it will eventually break, effectively ruin your engine beyond economical repair worth, and then you will have a pile of junk destined for the scrapyard. Definitely bite the bullet now instead of later.

If the timing belt jumps a tooth or breaks, you can be shopping for a new engine.

Those interference engines allow the valves to hit the pistons if it goes sideways - I know someone who had that happen to their Honda

Time to call a good shop or two and get some estimates and budget for the service - sooner rather than later

Thanks everyone!  We're probably going to do these services at around 104-105K.  That's when the next oil change dues.  Most likely it will be at the Acura dealer.  They give us loaner car and peace of mind.  Not sure if we know any shop we trust around here.

And your getting OEM parts from the dealer, that's not a bad thing. Like said, your engine is most likely an interference engine. Meaning: If it is installed incorrectly, breaks, or slips, you will bend valves and break pistons.

Honda parts will last the longest for whats available unless the engine is upgraded with non-honda parts or has a turbo or supercharger.

I don't blame you for not wanting to do that work yourself. It requires a mechanic with lots of experience to do the job right.

So we did the Replace timing belt, Replace water pump, Replace coolant, Replace drive belt, Replace timing belt tensioner for total of about $1026 at Honda dealer.  Have done these two yet: The spark plugs, they want $300 to replace them and they want about $450 for valves adjustment.  Do we need valves adjustment?  The manual says to adjust the valves if they are noisy.  How do we know they are noisy?  Car seems to drive normally.  Thank you.

My In-Laws went through this same ordeal recently with there Honduhh  & paid lots out of pocket, even at Employee cost. You may be able to find a small shop somewhere who can beat Dealers price, However I always personally recommend taking to qualified reputable dealer for major work. Their techs are trained and qualified to work on brand specific vehicles & have likely worked on them much longer. Yes you will pay more(sometimes a lot more) but going to a reputable dealer gives a lot more peace of mind. Some dealers will work with you on price, you just need to be honest with them(Hey man I really need to have this car reliable for my wife, can you help me with the pricing a little) and they will likely give you a little break on cost. I know our shop rate here is about $110/hr, but it's usually up the service adviser if he can give you a break, and I see a lot of time they will drop the shop rate a lot to earn a customers business.

Technology comes with a hefty price unfortunately and basically comes down to whether or not someone is willing to pay that price. Prefer "old school" tech myself as, Dr.Death pointed out. But if the cost of maintenance is worth it to you then i would agree with what other's have already said here - don't wait too long for repairs. Better safe than sorry i think. Have you considered possibly selling/trading towards another vehicle? One not so expensive to maintain and possibly even do basic mechanics on yourself without having to rely on others? That's just my 2cents but may be worth considering.

Thank you!

This is why to this day I'm still driving my old '79 1 ton Dodge pickup. It might cost me more in fuel over a new pick up,but it costs me alot less in repairs and maintenance than the new trucks since I can do all of the work myself. I thought about getting a new pick up this year until I looked under the hood of my Dad's 2017 F350. You have to lift the cab off the truck to work on anything.

I will not worry about the valves adjustment unless I hear the noise.  Even Honda dealer said they didn't hear any noise. They just recommend to do it at 105k.

Nope, Engine has been rebuilt countless times without removing it. Engine compartment is so big you would swear that the 360 in it was only a little V-6 lol

The only thing left to do is replacing the spark plugs.  We can just purchase the spark plugs and have some local shop to do it.

Before you buy those spark plugs and give them to the shop to install, inquire about their warranty in this matter. You may find that there is no warranty on owner provided parts.

I work at a shop that will allow for the usage/installation of owner provided parts but the customer is informed before work is performed that there will be no warranty on that/those part(s) if something goes wrong with them. And yes, I have seen my fair share of NEW parts go bad even when the shop purchases them. It happens. Even with spark plugs.

Thank you.

ya,  plugs at 300$ ??   unless there super to get to  or you got one of them  25 buck each platinum  plugs   it speced for  [ mine did and found plain ol'  autolite  runoff the mill plugs to use in mine  and guess what ??  worked better and lasted longer at 1.75$ each]    shows me what a rip off things can be  . go to a real parts house that will cross check that

may show may not fit but they do  its just not big bucks platinum  tipped  same motor for a 2008 takes them  but not the 2009 ?? hmmmmm.......  that's why get with a parts guy / mech. that wil be honest with you  , but still you may be stuck   the correct platinum  are like 10 bucks each   that's 60 bucks + tax  for a kit

anyway  see what fits  and grab a gap / feeler gauge   what ever ratchet and swivel / extensions  spark plug socket   and do  your self  . may not be so easy your first time but with that under your belt the 2ed and 3ed times go so much easier  ..    do it yourself and learn at 60 bucks is still cheaper then 300 at the shop  [opinion]

valves adj. at 400 maybe close   that's labor cost in a lot of that again  its not a fast job   pull covers  and hand  spin the crank  to a timming  and check clearance / adjust/set   . then how may valves is that motor  ? 24  ?  they count on no adj is needed   and do a random 3 or 4  valve clearance check / quickie  if there in tolerance there call all good  . if they find a few or one bad out it could be cam lobe ware   that may adj out then may not . may = new cam shaft
and something you don't want to end up with a goof

So we did the Replace timing belt, Replace water pump, Replace coolant, Replace drive belt, Replace timing belt tensioner for total of about $1026 at Honda dealer.  Have done these two yet: The spark plugs, they want $300 to replace them and they want about $450 for valves adjustment.  Do we need valves adjustment?  The manual says to adjust the valves if they are noisy.  How do we know they are noisy?  Car seems to drive normally.  Thank you.

ya,  plugs at 300$ ??   unless there super to get to  or you got one of them  25 buck each platinum  plugs   it speced for  [ mine did and found plain ol'  autolite  runoff the mill plugs to use in mine  and guess what ??  worked better and lasted longer at 1.75$ each]    shows me what a rip off things can be  . go to a real parts house that will cross check that

may show may not fit but they do  its just not big bucks platinum  tipped  same motor for a 2008 takes them  but not the 2009 ?? hmmmmm.......  that's why get with a parts guy / mech. that wil be honest with you  , but still you may be stuck   the correct platinum  are like 10 bucks each   that's 60 bucks + tax  for a kit

anyway  see what fits  and grab a gap / feeler gauge   what ever ratchet and swivel / extensions  spark plug socket   and do  your self  . may not be so easy your first time but with that under your belt the 2ed and 3ed times go so much easier  ..    do it yourself and learn at 60 bucks is still cheaper then 300 at the shop  [opinion]

valves adj. at 400 maybe close   that's labor cost in a lot of that again  its not a fast job   pull covers  and hand  spin the crank  to a timming  and check clearance / adjust/set   . then how may valves is that motor  ? 24  ?  they count on no adj is needed   and do a random 3 or 4  valve clearance check / quickie  if there in tolerance there call all good  . if they find a few or one bad out it could be cam lobe ware   that may adj out then may not . may = new cam shaft
and something you don't want to end up with a goof

300 at the honda dealer is about right, they do use ngk iridium or platinum plugs which are very good and last a long time, but every honda i have seen get the tuneup package included plugs, wires, rotor and cap if equipped. Doesnt include coil packs though. I always did my own but it was a 4cyl vtec motor, plugs right on top. Now my mitsu 3000gt VR4 TT was a different story, front three plugs took 30 minutes, back three took all day, had to remove the top intake plenum to get to them, no fun at all.
Valve adjustment is as needed, my accord went 300k + and never touched them, never ticked once, but again it was the 4cyl.

I had an '88 Mustang and had the timing belt break twice with just 138,000 km on the odometer.
