Hello,

So, first post, and pretty much amateur builder here.  Feel free to tell me I'm an idiot/moron/fool, though I do better with constructive criticism.  I'm here to learn.

I pulled a Samsung SM951 (512GB) M.2 SSD out of a laptop and tossed it into my desktop build, only to find the speed to be about 1,000MB/s slower than it was in the laptop.  Is this the expected/normal speed for the M.2 SSD drive in the X99 Classified?  I have also tested two Samsung 950 Pro M.2 SSD (512GB) in the M.2 slot in my X99 Classified only to find them returning about the same speeds as the SM951.  I was expecting more like 2500 MB/s like I get from the M.2 slots in my laptop, instead of the 1600 MB/s speeds I'm seeing.  If these aren't normal speeds, any suggestions on what I can do to speed it up?  Or like I said at the beginning of the post, feel free to tell me I'm a retard.  Would it help to move the second GPU?

I have included a screenshot of the SM951 test and I think the pertinent shot of BIOS.

Other info:
BIOS 2.02
i7-5960x
Titan X - x2 SLI
Samsung 850 Pro 1TB boot drive

Think that's it?

The M.2 socket on the X99 Classified is seviced via the PCH with 4 lanes Gen 2 PCI Express. Therefore your M.2 speeds will not be as fast as 4 lanes Gen 3 PCI Express.

Exactly.   You could put a PCIe 3.0 M.2 bracket in one of the unoccupied PCIe 3.0 slots and get them 3.0 speeds that way but as it stands, the M.2 onboard the X99 Classified is unfortunately 2.0.

1600 MB/s is pretty much as fast as it is going to get on the 3 "old" X99 motherboards from Evga
(X99 Classified, X99 FTW and X99 Micro).

Only the newer X99 "Micro 2" and X99 "FTW K" are capable of running your SM951 at full speed through the M.2 slot.

You will need a "PCIe 3.0 to M.2" adapter if you want the drive to go any faster in your current motherboard.

Can someone recommend a good m.2 ssd for my x99 classified? would a Samsung 950 PRO NVMe M.2 512GB be a good option?

A 950 Pro or a intel 750.  I think the 950 is a bit faster in certain areas.

Just make sure you use the PCIe Slots and NOT the M.2 interface because its capped at PCIe 2.0 speeds which is slower then 3.0, which you would get at least on the PCIe slots.  Just have to purchase a M.2 to PCIe adapter, depending if you go with 950 Pro because the intel 750 is already set on one.

A point to consider. If you do not utilize the M.2 socket or the PCI Express slot, with which it shares bandwidth, you will be sharing CPU lane lanes/resources. This is not necessarily a bad thing. It all depends on how many graphics cards and other add-on cards you will run.

I use an Intel NVMe PCIe 750 Series with no issues

I don't see an issue with that, assuming you're using it for PCIe 3.0.

Hey max!

I'm not sure if you'll need to reinstall windows if you're using the original OS M.2 drive from the board to the PCIe adapter.
