German game publisher Crytek is suing Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) for breaching contract and infringing its copyright, asking for a jury trial to determine the value of damages.

The two companies had originally partnered on Star Citizen, which still has no release date but has raised nearly $200 million in crowdfunding since it first launched on Kickstarter in 2012. CIG had used Crytek’s CryEngine technology and collaborated with the publisher on marketing, among other things. But as the years went on, their relationship disintegrated. As Crytek struggled to pay its employees, a large number of staff left the company for positions at CIG’s neighboring office in Frankfurt, Germany. In December 2016, CIG announced that it had switched to Amazon’s Lumberyard engine, which is based on CryEngine—and which, ironically, may have saved Crytek from bankruptcy.

5 years in alpha and 5 years of stealing money through various ways and yet it's them scamming another company that gets them in trouble. I would say I'm surprised but then again I'm not.

The main thing I see here is Crytech is biting the hands that fed it. They screwed up and dropped the ball and now CIG is worth more than what is left of Crytech. Suing CIG isn't going to fix the ineptitude Crytech has. If you've read anything about Crytech in the last 2 years, they've been screwing up so bad that I have no idea how they still even exist anymore. Of course they want to sue CIG. CIG has money, they don't. Personally, I think Crytech is trying to force CIG into buying them out and CIG no longer wants them.

Be that as it may you can clearly see that CIG did indeed violate the Crytek contract multiple times. Crytek still has money issues but not as bad as 2 years ago. The contract terms are not very difficult so why can't CIG just follow it?

CIG claims that they renegotiated the contract with Crytek when Crytek was in desperate times and that Crytek's claims are no longer valid in the renegotiated contract.
