They really should've called it something else and not name it Titan.  Everyone be thinking this is a gaming card but it sits closer to a Tesla instead of a Titan in performance even thought its closer to a titan than a tesla in terms of pricing.  All the issues would've been solved with a new name for this cut down Tesla.  Its basically a Tesla with display ports for video output.  If they had taken a $10-15k tesla and stick a display port on it and then introduced it under some new name it would've been better received because the gamers would've completely ignored it.

Totally agree. It seems their marketing terms are getting a little crossed here.

I don't know where NVIDIA is going with this.

Nvidia wants to bring the power of the Tesla's to smaller researchers such as smaller universities that don't have access to a high end HPC full of V100's or that don't have a the funding for it.  They took a V100 that is designed to function in a cluster via nvlink, which at 10k+ a piece can get pricey, in addition to having the adequate sever spaces to house it, and made it into a PCI-e that you can stick in a standard xeon PC and have access to the same tensor cores for deep learning.  So you don't have 10 tesla's in a cluster, but you have 1 that you can afford to buy and maintain.

Its mainly for anyone that can use double precision and tensor core for their research but can't afford full scale HPC or don't have access to one (my school for example would be able to make awesome use of a single titan V since we don't have access to a large scale HPC).

But their marketing sucked when they called it titan and got the attention of all the gamers.  And not the gaming community is going wth >.>.  I can tell you the researchers and smaller institutions are pretty stoked about it.

The per year numbers look impressive until you factor in the price of the card. It would take over a year and a half just to hit ROI with this card. That's a min 18 months or 540 days.

Also doesn't figure in increasing calculation difficulty. Those numbers people tout are usually if the difficulty stays static.

Overclocking could be interesting on this one, wonder if Kingpin will get one for some LN2 benchmarks :)

He usually doesn’t waste his time with these cards, since they arent meant for this.

If he wants to get his #1 spot back he'll need to use one.

It is a real nice card. But it gets hot. EK is making a block for it, but no ETA for it yet. Without the thermal limit being hit, the card can OC to almost 2000mhz

from GTC in japan this month

full keynote

Pay attention to "AI in gaming" in the intro  which would mean nvidia has plans to bring tensor cores to gaming
you have to establish the tensor cores first so developers can bring Ai into gaming in a year or so

also from what Im hearing Ampere has HBM3 so that would mean HPC first - while we would get volta

Yeah this card seems to be a great overclocker. I had mine around 1.8 ghz running at 75c on air while playing middle earth shadow of war. I am afraid to feed it too many volts :(

It definitely gives higher frames and seems to overclock better. I need to compare the image quality next still before i sell my old card.

HBM2 is not cheap

Iirc told Jensen in the last CC that Volta (Edit: V100 module!) Is already causing nearly in thousands of dollars in cost price. Ie average, three-digit unit costs. - from 3dcenter.org forum

the problem is packaging on the substrate - HBM2 is expensive - but so is using substrate silicon/interposer  to build 1 complete GPU chip unit

ie  At $ 300 HBM, Interposter ??? and GPU $ 600 ~ 10 chips per wafer (6000 $ / wafer)

so yeah dropping the HBM2 to gddr6 would be a blessing as well a getting a die shrink somewhere

Whelp, you can buy it right mean... it isn’t $3k though... it’s $2999 with free shipping.... because nvidia is clearly losing their mind and moving the Titan name to where the Tesla name use to exist.

Hell, maybe they had a really good reason for moving the name, but I still consider them to be making a very stupid move at this time. At least we won’t see gamers boasting about their Titan Volta since nvidia made this same move with the Titan Z and charged $3k for it... oh wait... people actually did buy those for gaming and will buy these for gaming...

Nah, the Tesla is more like $9000 AND UP.
Still a huge price jump for this card - I have no idea who it's INTENDED market is but they have priced most gamers right out of it.

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

Me thinks this is a test the waters screw the gamers card while purporting to be an AI/Tesla card.

Don't be surprised if the next top end gaming card comes in at 2500-3000 and the 1080 tier equivalent is 1100-1500 with the 1070 tier being 750-1000

I mean this is Nvidia we are talking about...

Nvidia will have two big GPUs in 2018

Ampere and the gaming GPU
There have been many reports that Nvidia’s next generation technology will be codenamed Ampere and we want to set one thing straight. The successor of Volta is an AI/ML chip and not a GPU - just like Volta never was.

Ampere is AI and mega large chip - HPC only - at first
gaming GPU will be volta

Sorry, I meant Quadro, and they were priced around $5k for this tier and no one would touch them for gaming... just name it Titan, and suddenly everyone wants it. Well played Nvidia.

Nvidia seems to have trashed the quadro line in favor of charging a stupid price so they can bait gamers that can’t think straight.

I'm happy to wait for the XX80, or XX80 ti, because yeah, Titan V is uh, pricy I'll take something about a quarter of the price for 10% less performance HBM2 is nice and all but GDDR6 works as well and likely won't do much worse.

Anyway I'm guessing March's GTC for a GPU in my price range at the earliest.

On another note, Maxwell Titan was a GeForce Titan x , meaning the gaming line...

Pascal dropped GeForce to focus on more professional work loads, but was still slightly aimed at gamers, Nvidia Titan X, and everyone called it Titan X(P) to differentiate the first and second Titan x.

The Titan V seems to be fully departing and moving outside of the typical gamers price range and need, so that would mean the Ti version will be a different card completely more than likely.

Nvidia’s new slogan, “screw the consumers and naming we used in the past, we do what we want!”

Titan is no longer gaming line at all.
The Titan V is a Tesla V100 with VERY MINOR changes (biggest change 12GB of HBM2 instead of 16) and moved to a PCI-E plug-in format, NOT a completely different GPU from previous Tesla models like previous Titans were.
This is how NVidia is justifying the huge price jump - it's NOT the same ballgame any more.

2080 ti (or whatever the top GAMING line card ends up being called) will be a different GPU entirely, NOT a "minor cut-down Titan V".
(the 20xx naming convention has been partly confirmed by a Samsung announcement that they would be selling GDDR 6 into NVidia 20xx cards).

BBT did a video on Titan V mining - it was impressive but not for the cost.
It DID indicate that the Volta line was probably going to be around 20% more efficient than Pascal for mining, perhaps a bit better.

I DO hope the Deep Learning folks are using SOMETHING more recent than FORTRAN IV..... 8-P

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

Not Too Cool to Rule: How One of NVIDIA’s Most Coveted Products Measures Up

“This is super cool.”
“I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“How do I get my hands on one?”
Talk to NVIDIA recruiter Lisa Calderon and she’ll tell you she has a secret weapon when it comes to getting tech’s top talent talking to her. It’s a foot long, one-and-a-half inches wide and covered with — to the uninitiated — strange gold markings.
“Everyone asks the same thing,” Calderon says. “‘Can I have one?’ And, of course, ‘can I take another one for my ‘friend’?’”
It’s the NVIDIA ruler. And, as many NVIDIANs have learned, taking this modest slab of PCB board to the right place — and showing it to the right people — gets an immediate reaction.

Picture for context, since this has nothing to do with the Titan V
