I am having to warranty my second PSU in 3 months for the same problem. Are these known to fail regularly? The first time there was no smell just random system shutdowns. This time I smelled a burning smell and tracked it to my sons PC. While I had the side open trying to figure out what the source of the smell was I noticed the PSU fan wasn't spinning so I pulled it out (after shutting it down of course) and noticed the smell coming from it, this is kinda crazy considering it is only 3 months old. I checked the cables and nothing seems burned on the cords or ends so it is definitely inside the PSU itself.

It was brought to my attention you might want some info on the system and power input. I am an electrician so I put my meter on the cord for the PSU and it is getting 120v from the surge protector it is plugged into so over/under voltage is not an issue.

The system is a custom built PC:

CPU: Phenom II x4 980 Black Edition
PSU: EVGA Super Nova NEX 750B semi modular
GPU: Nvidia GTX 560Ti
RAM: 8G (4x2) of DDR3 RAM Kingston 1333
HDD: 3 WD Caviar black 500g HDD with 1 being a dedicated OS drive.
Additional: 1 1600x900 Monitor, 1 standard keyboard and mouse and 1 DVD drive

That should tell you the quality of a Bronze power supply. If it was me, i would buy a quality made Gold or Platinum 80 Plus rated power supply. When the warranty replacement arrives, i would sell it or give it away.

I am considering it seeing as it has crapped out in 3 months.

If your previous one crapped out on you just like this one. I would consider doing that, unless you just like spending $$ to send in a product for warranty service.

I have a EVGA 750W P2 (80 Plus Platinum rated) in my system.

I'd cut my shipping cost losses and downtime and just put another equivalent CFM fan in it, using standard safety precautions..Not hard to do and fans are cheap..Takes a regular case fan you can buy just about anywhere PC parts/supplies are sold..The fan diameter will depend on the specific 750B version and they're probably all 25mm thick standard..Will need to snip off and change the connector end..No biggie, changed a handful of them here..Voids the warranty, of course.

See How to: change the fan of your power supply

I never bothered with soldering, just used butt connectors or twist the wires and put electrical tape on 'em..Take care that the polarity makes the fan blow into the PSU..Fan rotation/airflow direction is almost always marked on the housing.

Up to you..The fan control circuit may be bad and not the fan itself though, nothing you can do about that.
