Computer updated to Win 10 Fall Creators Update last week.  Now, I cannot update the video drivers.  It gets about halfway through the installation and just stalls there and eventually gives an error message saying the "update failed" and I have to roll back to the previous drivers.  Current drivers are 388.13.

My computer description is in my signature.  Any help would be appreciated.

@ Comrade. Just read and left a short note on the other thread that XrayMan refers too.
One thing that could be tried of course (but in your case 388.13 is running OK right? so probably not necessary) Is to manually download the driver from NV, Clean install and only install the driver and PysX. Sorry if that's what you have done.

The next way which I consider extreme is to use DDU, an effective program developed over years for removing all traces of graphics drivers. I used it once due to changing between AMD to NV on a secondary PC. Worked just fine. Could go that route, should work, but of course that's your call. You probably already know all this stuff, but may be useful for someone? I hope!

BTW: are there any other "oddities with Windows FCU," so many variables, but just a thought.

I always manually download and do a custom, and clean, install of new Nvidia drivers.  I have no 3D hardware so I leave those out as well as the GeForce Experience and the Nvidia HD Audio drivers.  I also don't update the PhysX drivers if there is no new version.

Never had any AMD hardware in this computer, so there shouldn't be any debris from them in the system.

No other problems with the computer.  Everything seems to run well and it scores quite high in benchmarks, both before and after the update.

It's just puzzling.  I guess I will try the DDU and see if that helps.

Computer has gotten worse since I last posted anything.  For a while it wouldn't find the video cards in Device Manager.  Now it just shows two, generic video cards running the default MS video driver.  It won't even detect my second monitor.  I've tried running the 'system file checker' and the DISM tool.  They say everything is good.

I cannot even get it to roll back to an earlier restore point.  It won't complete the restore operation.  If I try to install Nvidia drivers, it starts, and gets about 20% of the way through the install and then hangs and times out saying the 'install failed'.

Is NVidia PhysX included as part of the driver now, and not as a separate component? I just did a fresh install of W10 which included the NVidia driver and HD Audio driver, but I do not see PhysX in the 'apps' list... It does show in the NVidia control panel, so I assume it is installed. I also note that W10 installs NVidia in a different location than the default NVidia location.

The Nvidia installer always gives me the option to install PhysX.  It's usually at the bottom of the list.  I don't install any of the 3D stuff as I don't have any of the gear to use it.  I also always do a clean install.  The PhysX version number hasn't changed for quite a few Nvidia video drivers versions now.

I eventually had to break down and reinstall Win 10.  I did the option to keep my files and reinstall.  It kept all my files but uninstalled a bunch of programs.  At least it gives one a list of what it uninstalled, so it's easier to remember what I had to reinstall.  A fair number of them I haven't used in so long, I won't reinstall them again.

Yeah the NVidia installer always worked for me, but Windows 10 pro on a fresh install did the Nvidia drivers automatically. I also see 3D vision driver in the apps list, but not physX, yet the option is there in the NVidia control panel. Strange.
