Long Time Nate, I'm just across the Hudson but spent much of my life on that side between work, hiking, camping fishing etc. What part are you headed to?

You will be going past, wave as you go by.
I am not too far from there. On the other side of the river too.
I'll be out tonight looking for some shooting stars too, if there is no cloud cover.

When I think of the Catskills I think of when I was kid going to the Catskill Game Farm back in the mid to late '80s.
Edit: I guess the former property is now a very big camping site.

I went there in the 60s as a kid, took my kids in the 80, 90s and grandson when he was young.
I miss that place, was always a fun day trip.
    Kids loved it.

There are some pretty cool caves up that way to explore.
Ice caves mountain, if you have some extra time.

I didn't end up crashing there.  It was a judgement call.  I was all by myself.  No cellphone reception for 20 miles, and I was driving up a goat path in mini SUV not designed for said trail.  I barely made it out of there on the reconnaissance mission.  The state forest was quite overgrown, and I need a clearing of at least a football field in size.  Plus lugging a 150 lbs telescope, tent, gear, water etc... wasn't my idea of fun, and there wasn't much daylight left to recon the entire state forest for a good spot, transport gear, set up shop etc.

I made a judgement call and aborted.  All the nice open spots were all private property around the park and I don't know anyone up there.  Plus I asked myself how weird would it be if some random dude came ringing my doorbell and said hey, do you mind if I camp out on your property?  The Pepacton reservoir only had cell phone service on the south side.  Murphy Hill is on the north side of the reservoir.

I really was saddened to drive 3 hours just to abort, but not all hope was lost.  I went to Jenny Jump Observatory and I set up shop there just as the sun was setting.  Took some nice pictures:

AND the highlight of the night - ORION

No processing for any of these.  Just used a Cannon T6.  mounted on top of the smaller telescope with equatorial mount w/tracking.

That picture of Orion is (currently) the top rated picture on r/astrophotography.

I have to try it out during the day.  I just used my Canon EOS rebel 6 adheared to a 1/4 20 stud on top of the telescope.
