Find yourself a VPN provider. Preferably outside your country (if you can) and test a few out before you sign up. There are a few providers out there and quite a few articles (here, here and here for example). I host an OpenVPN server at my business for my personal use but that's not necessarily for preventing tracking or privacy, just mainly to access my hosts remotely.

I used TunnelBear on my laptop when I was staying at a hotel on business recently. Worked like a charm, and it's free for the basic version (provides 500MB data per month) so you can try it for a while first or just always run it for free if 500MB/month is enough for your needs. If you need unlimited data transfer, you can pay $7.99 on a monthly basis, or $49.99 for a whole year unlimited data (works out to $4.16/month). Winning.

Thanks to the people that did reply to my question. I guess the lot of you don't want to admit you use vpn? I was hoping to see a lot of replies stating what you use and why. but the little info I got helped out. but still looking for more input if anyone wants to chime in.
I mean come on this is a gaming community with pc builders. I'd be surprised if there were less then 30% of you that didn't have a vpn lol

I don't use TunnelBear at home, it was just for when I was using my personal laptop on an insecure hotel WiFi connection. For work use at home, it's either Citrix on the desktop for my Mrs (her work provides it) and a VPN service on my work laptop but I can't recall what service it is...

    Another vote for PIA.
I have been using it for years, great price, seems to work well.
The mobile app also works well when I am traveling or on unsecured WiFi.

Will absolutely not use them. They are as insecure as it gets, and especially don't use them for sensitive personal info. They can "claim" they are secure, trustworthy, your best friend, that you won a cash pay out but truly you have no idea where your data is going in the end, whos sniffing it etc....

I have purposely stayed out of this discussion because I am probably ignorant. But, I just have to say it....

I don't put trust in VPNs. The VPN is run by yet another faceless corporation. Can you trust them? What makes you believe that they aren't selling your information to 3rd parties or sharing it with governments? Doesn't a VPN conveniently focus all of your communication through one network which would make all of the secrets you are trying to hide even more easy to uncover?

Just throwing it out there. I don't see the point of paying money to potentially have a connection which is even less secure or at least creates a much more focussed target point.

I don't use it myself except on my mobile phone. There is a great deal of software and hardware to protect you for security purposes. Some people use VPN to try and fake their position to received foreign news and TV programs but with companies like Netflix that isn't really needed anymore.

I would highly prefer Nord VPN over PIA. I have been using Nord since a long time and I can surely say this the best pick. However, I would still recommend you going through the list of and find out the detailing and pricing of each VPN whatever comes handy.

    Same here, I'm using NordVPN.
I used to have AirVPN for many years. They're really affordable and reliable. I recommend both.

I'd like to try ExpressVPN but can't justify the huge price difference.

PIA works well, but seemed a bit clunky when trying to turn it on and off.

NordVPN has most slick install and user interface (IMHO).

Beware that having VPN on all the time (my original intent) can break some email programs (perhaps having blacklisted some of the resulting IP numbers as a source of spam). There is a way to bypass by specific web sites (i.e., the web address of your gmail account could be an exception that routes outside the VPN connection).

Re: LETS TALK VPN 2019/01/23 01:57:15 (permalink)
Before choosing a VPN you have to look few things that are,
    • Speed
    • Servers
    • Must be no log
    • VPN must be gaming friendly
    • VPN must no discourage torrenting.
    Lets elaborate these points.

    Speed
Speed is a major factor that you have to look before choosing any VPN. Because most of the VPNs slow down the speed of internet. So I always recommend to go with fast VPN provider like ExpressVPN.

    Severs
The second thing that you have to look before choosing a VPN is servers. The more server VPN contain the more advantage you can gain from that VPN. However, Nord has 5000+ servers.

    VPN must be no log
About every VPN claiming them itself as no log VPN but last year controversy of famous VPN provider (PureVPN) confirm that not all VPNs are no log.

    VPN must be gaming friendly
If you are a gaming fan and you usually play online games then VPN that you are choosing must be gaming friendly otherwise you will definitely face the issue of lags of pings. However, you can choose VYPR VPN for gaming because they are offering some outstanding features for gamers.

    VPN must no discourage torrenting
If you are a torrent lover and you usually download games and movies from a torrent then the VPN provider that you are choosing must no discourage torrenting. You can ask from their live chat support if they are offering. Or you can check allbestvpn(.)com to find a right solution related to VPN.)

    Thanks, me later.

I picked PIA a few years ago because of the lack of logging. I'm not a fan of companies mining meta-data. I mostly use it to get around region locks for tv streaming.

Ayooo guys, just as I was doing a bit of research about VPNs. Apparently not all VPNs can be trusted as  pointed out. I came to a conclusion that it's best to choose one that does not record info and does not allow for possible DNS leaks. I stumbled upon this which even says a feature called Zero Record policy. My friend has a promo code for this lol so I'm reviewing first if I will consider. Maybe somebody in this forum can vouch (or not) for this?

I would recommend anyone considering subscribing to a VPN watch this video to learn what a VPN can and cannot do and cautions about VPN marketing and so forth.

A big question is do you need a VPN? Watch the video.
