Hello Everyone.

I built a computer five years ago with the help of Tom's Hardware.  It has worked great.  Windows 7 machine.
ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 motherboard and
EVGA GeForce GT 630 2GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card

About two months ago, if I was to leave my machine running over night - in the morning the monitors would not respond - just black.  So I would reboot.  Then I started getting - One Long Beep and Three Short beeps after POST.  ASUS manual diagnostic is VGA not Detected.

To get the system to boot up - I just keep powering up until it works. Last weekend I replaced my PSU with the Corsair 450W CX450 - I had previously used a Corsair 430.  It didn't do the trick.

I cleaned out the inside and re-seated the Nvidia GeForce GT 630Card. Thought it worked at first but started getting beeps again.

So I figure I'll try a new Video Card.  Can you guys recommend a comparable card - the 630 is not available on New Egg.  I use two monitors.
No gaming just browsing and excel work.....

Thanks in Advance
Peter

Is your motherboard bios completely up to date? If no, I'd highly recommend you update your motherboard bios first before buying a new video card as a bios update may resolve your issue.

Do you know the specific part number of your GT 630? Some of them had different configurations of video outputs, so knowing the part number would be helpful for recommendations. Also, please let us know what video connectors both your monitors use (DVI, HDMI, etc.)

Yes the Model # of my GT 630 is 02G-P3-2639-KR.  I have two DVI Monitors.  Thanks.

Sajin - thanks for the follow up on the BIOS - I will try that today.
The only time I updated a BIOS I did it with a machine that was booting normally.
Hopefully that will do the job!

Looks like the closest replacement to your GT 630 would be a GT 710 linked HERE. It is one of the few cards left that still has two DVI connectors and is great for office tasks or web browsing.

Thanks Adam - it looks like a good match for my machine.  Going to try the BIOS update first but have no problem laying out $55 if it fixes my problem!

I just reset the BIOS this morning to AMI 2701  (3/24/2016) will see if I lose connection to my monitors overnight.  I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I didn't leave my system on overnight because it was critical I had my machine operating today so I shut it down.  However, I have rebooted  numerous times since my BIOS upgrade and I have a strong feeling that may have fixed my issue!  I will check in on the weekend.

Spoke to soon.....back to One Long, Three Short Beeps with no monitors this morning.  Bummer.
If I keep rebooting I can get it going eventually but that won't last forever.
Likely go with new Video Card since Diagnostic's indicate VGA NOT DETECTED.
Is it likely my motherboard is ok since it took the BIOs update.  The card is only $60
    Thoughts - Suggestions?
    Thanks

My MA597 ASUS Motherboard has a second PCIe 2.0 x 16 Slot.  I currently use the blue one which is labeled as x16 speed.  The other slot (black one) is rated as x4 speed.  But I'm not gaming.  There are two other slots but they are won't fit my card - too small?  I'll try the Black Slot.

Just swapped card into black slot.  Browsing seems slower but maybe I am looking for it.  Will leave monitors on overnight and see if I get disconnected.  I did remove a fair amount of dust from the blades of the card fan and gave it a blast of air.  Will report back.  Thanks

Re: Replace GeForce GT 630 Card 2017/10/16 07:34:26 (permalink)
    Morning Everyone.
As indicated the swap of the Video Card to the PCIe 2.0 x 4 Slot did allow me to operate fine.  But unfortunately it hasn't fixed my monitor disconnection problems after a prolonged period of non-use ~ 8 hours or so.  The system is 5 years old - so the Video Card and ASUS motherboard are the same age.  As noted I already replaced the PSU.  Any other tests I should run to check the motherboard or the video card?  I'm just trying to think logically why the disconnection would occur.  What might occur on the Video Card - to force a decoupling?  Bad memory?

Anyway - open for suggestions - really appreciate all the insight to date.  I can always get past the beeps and the system to boot (as I am using it now) by cycling the power a bunch of times.  Interestingly, if I formally shut down my machine - I don't seem to get the problem (I think).  Ok.....
    Thanks
    Peter

Try reproducing the issue by testing the card in another system.

    Sajin -
I am the only person I know with a desktop - seriously.  So that will be hard.  Everyone in my universe seems to own Apple laptops.
If you had to guess - is it more likely that it is the components on the card that are the issue - than the motherboard?
Maybe I should view 5 years with my ASUS motherboard as a good run. $65 for a card won't kill me but I hate buying parts that end up going unused......
    Tough call.

Hard to say if it's the motherboard or the video card. Testing the card in a different pc will tell you which one is causing the issue. If a different video card works fine in your system then the old 630 was the issue.

    Hello Everyone -
Just wanted to close up this thread in terms of what transpired.  Thanks to Sajin - I updated my BIOS and I am sure that helped in ways I don't even know.  But with regard to my "overnight disconnection of my monitors" and then the "One Long and Three Short Beeps" on reboot issue.......I have decided to do nothing beyond shutting my system down when I know I won't use it for 6+ hours.  That way I always (knock wood) get a clean boot.

I think it could just as easily be the motherboard as the card - so for now - I cry uncle.....

Any thoughts - Happy to hear.
    Thanks
    Peter

    Hi Again -
Hopefully ok to use this thread even though I said I was closing it....:)
Anyway - I continued to have the three beeps (VGA not detected) so I took Adam's (EVGA Tech's) advice and ordered a GT 710 for my dual monitor setup.  I am aware it could be my motherboard but I figured I could replace that next if this doesn't do the trick.  (I have an ASUS M5A(& LE R2.0 motherboard ~ 5 years old.)

I am currently using the EVGA GT 630 card.  The GT 710 is a shorter profile but I am assuming I still just use one of the two PCIe 2.0 x 16 slots.

Just curious about the install. After I power off and install new card.  What will happen on reboot?  I have already downloaded the most recent driver for the new card but have not run it yet.  When I boot with new card will the system let me get to my desktop si I can run the new driver?????

    Thanks
    Pete

    Hello and welcome back

Make a restore point First (just in case something goes wrong)

Your Win 7 machine is it 32-bit or 64-bit ?

NVIDIA is making the following updates to our operating system support effective April 2018:

You should remove the Nvidia driver and install a default Windows driver first

Make sure you unplug your PC from the wall, then hold start button 30 seconds - to discharge capacitors in your PSU.

Because --->    There is power to an Off computer & changing anything mounted to MB can cause irreparable damage

Follow ESD standards (ground yourself with a strap is best or at a minimum touch the case first)

Open your PC where you have room to work with good light

Take a picture or several Before you move Anything - if you are not experience - stuff happens

Remove original card & install new card

    I run Windows 7 64 bit.
You should remove the Nvidia driver and install a default Windows driver first
Do you mean I should uninstall all of my current NVIDIA drivers via my Control Panel?
    Install a default Windows driver
Is that resident on my drive by default?
If so, is that default driver sufficient to let me see my desktop, so I can run the 398.36-desktop-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql executable?

To install the new gt 710 simply do the following...

    #1 Download/install DDU.
#2 Start ddu and select the clean & shutdown option.
#3 Disconnect psu power cable from wall.
    #4 Wait 30 seconds.
#5 Open case and install new gt 710.
#6 Plug psu cable back into wall.
#7 Start pc and install the latest drivers. Done.

Windows will recognize a hardware change and want to install the latest NVIDIA Driver that's stored in the Windows Driver Store..Ain't no thing..Plug and play, basically.

    Bingo!
    Thanks for the feedback Cool/Sajin/Bob.
Followed Sajin's 7 Steps- both monitors booted right up!
Had to reset the time.  Maybe my battery is going on the motherboard?
If I hear those three beeps again - it will be time to replace the motherboard.
    Can't thank you enough
