DRM isn't proving itself at this time in my opinion. It is too easily cracked as shown here. A DRM that be cracked in 2 days means another technology needs to be found that can replace it should the gaming industry still want it.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

Why don't these companies make the DRM server-side and verify the data packets via encryption. That way, no such cracking can occur.

My guess would be people complaining they can’t play it offline.

Exactly!  When they do implement security which makes the game online-only, the blowback has proven to often be severe.

Who isn't on the Internet these days? If you've got any of the major game clients, you don't mind being online, regardless if it's a single player game or not.

Sounds like a silly excuse people say to try and get around DRM and 'freedom of playing offline.'

Internet outages on ths user's end, traveling, server side problems and verification servers going offline completely are a few reasons requiring an internet connection are a problem. I bought some things on the original Xbox years ago, redownloaded them to my 360, but since the original Xbox servers are no longer online to verify, I can longer play any of that content on my 360. GoG has a client, but you don't need to be connected unless you are playing a multjplayer game. They seem to be doing just fine.

It's also more expensive to have a server running for the sole purpose of single player gaming.

When Xbox and PlayStation announced that an internet connection would be required to play their games, how did people react? When XBox initially launched, and PlayStation laughed at Xbox because they actually implemented the feature for a few weeks, how did people react? Do you think just because it is on PC that it is different? If you do, then you are wrong. If you do not, then you answered your own question and negated your own statements.

Are you current on your gaming news?  Forced online-only gaming requirements have been a huge non-selling point for years.  It definitely has not all of the sudden become accepted by the majority.  If for no other reason, gamers are skeptical of the publisher and the power the publisher gains to be able to just flick a switch to make an "old" game stop working in order to force gamers to buy newer games.

Fine, then encrypt the data offline so no one can tamper with it.

Have it check if the CRC's match, have it generate a 256 bit key on installation and if anything is modified, the key doesn't validate and the user can't play the game.

Then you could just copy the installed game.

Well, if you have connection issues, their server is down, or your internet is out, you're screwed. It also disables playing the game in the future, when the authentication won't be available.

Such DRM is just bad because it screws over the user, and brings additional costs and maintenance. You could probably crack the authentication somehow too I bet, people would certainly have more incentive to do so at least. Plus the developer now has to host servers just for that, that's not free.

It hasn't been effective, and there's plenty of precedence that it isn't favorable.

I agree, gipo (and others). Overall, I think more can be done without infringing on the freedom of the user but the industry hasn't gotten there yet. I agree with you all, there are a lot of variables that have to be considered because there are so many scenarios.

Don't forget that there's also many parts of both USA and the world where either the internet quality is poor or practically non-existent. Another reason why always online is never a viable option.
