Hi folks,

I have (2) GTX 780 6GB cards in 2x SLI. In the middle of one of my CS:GO gaming sessions, the screen started to tear with horizontal red lines. I took a picture of it before Windows gave errors in the notification tray stating the "Nvidia Display driver stopped working and has recovered". The computer eventually crashed and shutdown. When the computer restarted and was going through POST, the splash screen also was discolored and had the red horizontal lines. I decided to do the following:

  1. Upgrade the nVidia drivers to the latest drivers with a clean installation (v385.69 Thu Sep 21, 2017 as of this writing).
  2. Swapped the SLI bridge from one location to the other location.
  3. Swapped the SLI bridge with a brand new one.
  4. Swapped GPU positions on the motherboard.
  5. Tested each GPU individually.

None of these resolved the issue. I have ruled out the monitor and monitor cable as being the culprit. I am wondering what the odds of both cards going bad is.

Do you thinks this qualifies for an RMA on both of my GPUs?

Attached are a few pictures.

Thanks a bunch.

Yeah that sounds driver related. You need to clean up the old NVidia driver installs and install a older driver that's more compatible with 7xx series cards. You gotta watch nvidias driver since the 7xx series they have been really hit and miss. Also, whatever you do, do not install GeForce expierence, 3d drivers or hd audio..... just install the GeForce driver and PhysX if you want to. That's it. Then reboot the pc yourself if it doesn't tell you to and you should be ok. Are you using Precision or Afterburner to control gpu fan speeds? Have you cleaned these cards or reapplied new TIM at all?

Everything is completely stock, I have not touched any OCing tools. I also did not mess around with applying new thermal solutions since I do not want to void my extended warranty (10 years). However, I will try the driver suggestion and report back.

EVGA will not void your warranty, any warranty on a gpu, for applying new TIM, taking apart and cleaning the card, replacing the cooler with new air or water blocks as long as you don't physically damage or alter the card from the factory setup. What I mean by that is deep gouges in the pcb, dropping and breaking parts, painting the card etc.... You have to be able to put it back the way you found it essentially because these cards get repaired and put into the bstock/refurb/rma piles. Superficial scratches or dulling is common and wont affect your warranty. They are human and it is a used piece of hardware and they understand that. Afterburner would probably be a wise thing to install so you can at least setup some profiles with faster fan speeds for different uses, but thats up to you.

Looks like a bad cable/faulty vram to me.

#1 Test the cards individually. Make sure to test all outputs on both cards.
    #2 Do #4 listed here.

Here are the additional steps I took per your guidance.

    1. Replaced the monitor and the monitor cable with an identical, brand new one that I had sitting around.
    2. Used DDU to uninstall all drivers in safe mode. Note: there were still horizontal red lines in safe mode.
    3. Rebooted and installed nVidia v384.94 drivers which I have used without any issues previous to this issue occurring. I made sure to only install the graphics drivers and PhysX software (i.e., no GeForce Experience, HD Audio Driver, etc.).
    4. Ran MSI Afterburner and noticed that it did not detect the GPU. Screenshot attached.
    5. Checked Device Manager and saw this error: "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". Screenshot attached.
    6. Tested DVI-D output (top port) works with horizontal red lines (current setup).
    7. Tested DVI-I output (bottom port) does not show anything (black).
    8. Tested HDMI output briefly shows a blue screen and then does not show anything.

Are there any other steps I can take to troubleshoot?

Maybe a Bios Setting, did you just update the Bios?

If you RMA make sure you check the Box that this is part of a SLI Setup.

No, I did not. The only thing I updated during this time was the drivers. Just a reminder from my first post, this started happening mid-game. Never had this issue in the past several years. The settings I have are tried and proven to be good configurations. I am almost certain the GPUs have gone faulty.

I have not and did not even think of it. I have had it for 2 years with monthly testing to ensure correct operation. I will try it this evening and report back.

Do you have the Software Installed for your "CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS System"?
If so have it run it's testing process, takes about 2 Hours to complete.

Holy Shoot!  This worked!  Restored an EVGA 780 ti SC that was getting red lines and no acceleration with the oven method!  I did 380F for 10 minutes exactly.  Last ditch effort, but unreal.  Hopefully the contacts hold this time.

Edit: I had to tear everything down to just the board and remove the cooling solution of course, but easier than I thought it would be.  In the realm of taking apart a laptop, just keep the screws in a couple small containers.

I want to join Club Oven. Same exact deal, red dashes randomly all over screen, no other monitors receiving any input. I will post if I get in.

----EDIT---- I am now in the Oven Club... I took it apart last night, cleaned it, new thermal... hoping that would work. It did not, so, took it apart, cleaned thermal, put in the oven at 410 for 7 minutes, reapply thermal and boom! She back to ****in normal.

    NICE!
