Yes. Like I said, at 1440p the 920 will bottleneck, at 4K you will get the most out of the 1080Ti.

That is not at all what you said, lol.

CPU's do not bottleneck "Graphics cards"

They bottleneck the API's and the games that use them, but they do not bottleneck the 'hardware'.

This is evident through the fact that DX12/Vulkan can make full use of a 1080ti on a Bulldozer architecture FX8150.

Any CPU becomes a bottleneck when the Application running on it requires things to be executed in a serial way that impedes the activities of graphics or resource loading api's.

Just ordered the EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 High bandwidth edition from Newegg.com! Hoping I get before the weekend for some testing with my 920 DO.

If going for a 4K monitor I would say a 920 would suffice, but 1440p is where you sacrifice the resolution on favour of more frames. The best CPUs today are bottlenecked at 1080p and a first gen core i7 is really going to struggle, even at 1440p.

Let us know how it goes. I'm quite intrigued. Did you stick with the 1440p monitor?

I believe a bottleneck is a non issue. Heres  a comparison I just went thru. I had an X-58 with a I7 965 EE @ 3.8 it did not like HT above that much.
I knew I wanted an UW so I up graded the cpu. First thing I upgraded the bios then picked up an Intel
Xeon W3690 currantly about $100 on E-bay then bumped my ram to 12g from 6g. I then picked up a 35"
Acer XZ350CU 144hz and haven't looked back. The new cpu runs 4.165 with HT ON and I know it's not the
1440 resolution but this rig has no problems what so ever hitting 144fps in BF1 I run a mixture of settings.
I think it looks great and about 700 invested I believe 1366 is at it's end with this last move. Which should
get me another two or three years.
Good Luck Valtrius

Update!
With my i7 920 DO and with 3440x1440P res I average 40-50 fps on Ultra and 50-60 on High with Battlefield 1.  I just upgraded to an X99 FTW K mobo paired with an I7 6850 K and average 100+ FPS on Ultra and Custom Ultra with BF1.  So the answer is there was a bottleneck with the i7 920 DO but still playable with a GTX 1080 TI FTW3 High bandwidth edition on Ultra Wide resolution.  Now the only question I have: is the High bandwidth FTW3 worth the extra $50?

Hi Guys,

Need some input pls!  I am having issues playing Battlefield 4 multiplayer.  My GTX 1080 TI FTW3 HB gpu averages 175 FPS then suddenly drops to 30 for about 10 secs then goes back to normal.  I notice the low FPS and Server Perfomance warning icons on the right side of the screen.  My i7 6850K is barely working a sweat so its not a CPU bottleneck.  Any advise is appreciated!
Thanks
Jerome

HDD OR SSD?

What programs do you have running in the background? I know the 6850K is a hexacore but it might still be impacting the performance.

Is the GPU or CPU overclocked? It might be unstable.

By High bandwidth you mean FTW3 elite 12gbps ?
The higher the resolution, the more memory clocks matter.
Many normal 1080ti cards can be OCed to 12gbps speed though.

Are you running XOC or other GPU software on the background?
Closing them is worth a try.

Re: Bottleneck 2017/10/16 12:05:37 (permalink)
@Valtrius - i have the games installed in a Samsung 840 EVo 240 GB SSD.  The CPU is not overclocked and the GPU is on K.  The only new parts with my rig is the EVGA X99 FTW K, i7 6850K, 32 GB of DDR4 Ballistix Elite memory, Noctua NH-U14S,  and the GTX 1080 TI FTW3 HB
@Edome - I have the High Bandwidth memory edition of the GTX 1080TI FTW3.  I have tried having the XOC and other GPU on and off the background and experienced no difference.

Whats weird is that Battlefield 1 is running perfect --> which is more demanding for cpu/gpu than Battlefield 4.  The FPS drops occur even on low/med/high/Ultra video settings.  I would average 175+ FPS (ULTRA) and suddenly drop to 20-30 FPS for.  The CPU temp run around 45-50 and the GPU around 60.  I'm stumped

Any advise is appreciated!
Thanks
Jerome

Sounds like a bug in the game code then, maybe try bf4 forums and see if other people have had similar problems?

You should use DDU when installing drivers to make sure there's nothing left behind when installing new drivers, especially when upgrading the graphics card.

Congrats on your new config. and solving your problem.
Everytime you have a GPU problem, you can relate to this LINK, that Sajin posted a guide for clean installs and common problems solving for new GPUs.

Vatrius did the right recommendation here.
Always use DDU anytime you're going to update your graphics cards drivers.
Same goes for installing a new version of PXOC (unnistal, delete the folder, and if possible, clean registries).
