thinking about picking this up. any feedback on the game?

Looks like another forgettable modern multiplayer FPS game. It's not Quake either regardless of how they attempt to market it. The age of twitch skill based multiplayer FPS games is over with.

Out of curiosity how is the game not quake? 

Because some characters have cheat features.......
 
Quake was all about having the same everything and the best man wins.

I have played a lot of the new quake, it is most certainly a quake game. Those "abilities" are mostly useless and a gimmick, and so have no real barring on most games i have played. It literally plays like Quake 3. If you liked Q3, you will like champions.

Being able to move faster, wall hack without being banned, and turn invisible most definitely matters otherwise they'd never have put it in there to begin with. This Quake game is nothing like a real Quake game and instead they are creating another forgettable modern FPS and using old brand recognition for anyone to pay attention to it. It will be a massive flop and you can take that to the bank.
