So about a year ago, I decided to build myself a PC and got it to work eventually. But problems started arising when playing games sometimes it would run really slow with frames dropping from 60 fps to 10 fps and it would sometimes lose signal to the monitor. I don't really know what's causing this to happen as it only happens when playing. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help.

Here are the parts used

'' it would run really slow with frames dropping from 60 fps to 10 fps''  I guess any thermal throttling could do this   [CPU/ gpu/ even a psu  can heat up and fail to deviver stable power ? ]

looks like you got a nice build with solid hardware
then if you use that malware called windows 10   no telling whats going on there ? it may of behind your back tried to install a driver and got things crossed up  and corrupted  in some way  .  google that and see where guys install a driver and 10 changes your mind   , it does as it wants not as you want  ,  remember win 10 is not a OS its a ''cloud based service''

''  and it would sometimes lose signal to the monitor. ''

well if you google that around on 900 series you may see that can be a issue with them      to be honest I started with driver 355.82 and all was great   but when I updated the driver to seems like 372.xx  that's when my issues started   , sad thing is  falling back don't resolve    - my 2ed hard drive with win 7  that I did not upgrade the driver from 355  still has -0- issues  [go figure ]

so I assume what ever the lateter driver changed in the 1st hard drive win-7  don't repair or change back   the card also works with out issue under my Linux drives as well  ..

now you should monitor the system when in a game your experiencing this   and it may be nessary to try / test that card in another compatible computer   to try to see if its the card at fault of something else in your system  so if the card does the same  look at the card  if the card seems to be all fine and dandy  then look at some reason in your build  ..

this is not just a evga issue but 900 series in general  [seemed like gigabytes cards got a lot of that loose signal deal]

maybe look at some of this to use to test and review  [I use a 980ti hybrid as well ]

    for examples

    hwinfo64

    http://imgur.com/7TUl4XA
the hybrid is a 275w  +/-  power limit card  when maxed at full load  a bench like firestrike should get it there
    http://imgur.com/OKoBc7M

may look at the psu  stable voltages ?

    http://imgur.com/AvRnRgU

    ATX v2.2)
    Voltage RailToleranceMinimum VoltageMaximum Voltage+3.3VDC± 5%+3.135 VDC+3.465 VDC+5VDC± 5%+4.750 VDC+5.250 VDC+5VSB± 5%+4.750 VDC+5.250 VDC-5VDC (if used)± 10%-4.500 VDC-5.500 VDC+12VDC± 5%+11.400 VDC+12.600 VDC-12VDC± 10%-10.800 VDC- 13.200 VDC
    firestrike stress test ?

    http://imgur.com/BualSW7

then something lite  like GPU-Z   for background monitoring

my hybrid 980 ti running  valley bench and gpu-z render test at the same times 3ed loop result

    http://imgur.com/CpI1F2t

thing is in the end   if you cant draw a conclusion   don't let your RMA / return / refund  time run out  .       for me its test as best I can  - if not resolved or feel satisfied   =  return/ rma   most store like newegg just gives 30 days  unless other wise   listed

another thing is I seen at other forums   where guys had to rma there skylake  cpu's back to intel  after they replaced everything else with no resolve  and that resolved  [bad run of chips ??? ]

    good luck

Which port are you using on the 980? One of my 970s is very touchy in the Display port. Can drop for no reason if not carefully plugged in. The HDMI and the DVI don't have this problem. I would run the Display Port on the other card, but I get a loud coil whine if I do.

That is me in the picture, anyone else ever pet a live Lion?

'' The HDMI and the DVI don't have this problem ;''

I thought with the 900 series it was the dvi port that was flakey and a few tended to just become non functional  [seemed gigabytes cards had this the worse ] , but I guess any port can be buggy
    [some examples]
      https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/863996/gtx-980-ti-won-t-detect-any-monitor-plugged-into-the-dvi-port-once-the-driver-is-installed/?offset=6

    https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/427681-dvi-d-port-on-my-gtx-980-ti-gygabyte-g1-gaming-stopped-working/

just seems like a port not working is just one of them things with the 900 series   if its not a monitor or cable issue    you can google something like 980 ti dvi port not working and see a lot on that along with hdmi or dis.port.

''So in case anyone was still wondering, I finally got my issue resolved. BenQ decided it was time to RMA my monitor and I just started that process. In the mean time my newly ordered displayport cable arrived in the mail and I decided to give it a shot... sure enough the dumbest (and easiest) solution fixed it. I should have known better than to overlook this one.''

I really wish I could return it instead, I bought it off of Newegg which the 30 day return is already over. I'm using the Display Port right now and have used all three of them with the same issue happening in each one. The same thing happens when I use the HDMI port also. Might it be a overheating issue? But as I've checked the fan seems to be running fine. I"ll have to check that stuff later during the week Dr.Death. Maybe I missed something when installing the card?

Re: GTX 980 TI Hybrid problem 2017/08/29 04:52:44 (permalink)
let me ask  how well will it do in safe mode  or uninstall the driver and do what little you can to see if the issue reoccurs  ?    with my  980ti [hybrid]  I got this when I went to something like driver 372.xx or something  I never had the issue with driver 355.82 ??

I thought in one of them links I gave above one guy said it seemed a driver issue for him as well ??

sad thing is if you google it around you do se a lot of 900 cards with these port issues  like this   with any brand so make me think its a NVidia design issue or something in the drivers

anyway with my card   I use 4 OS's    2 win7  2 Linux    the only time my card does this is under the win -7  I updateded the driver from 355.82    - the card dose not have the issue  under the rest  and the 2ed win- 7 I never updated the driver at all  ???????  next sad thing is  going back to 355.82   did not resolve the issue  in the 1st win 7  ?

thing is for me its not so bad cause it does this  at start up when windows loads all the drivers needed   like it don't recognize  my monitor [like it hangs  on something ]  it displays but then goes black'/  no signal   I just turn the monitor off and back on and after that all works well all day   as normal with out issue

so seeing that the rest of the OS's don't do any of this and the only thing that changed was I updated the driver in the 1st win-7 only  got to be something in the latest drivers did something or mis configured  , but like I said I not been able to correct it

sounds stupid but that's how it went here

I don't know if you were to use one of them driver sweeper programs and uninstall your cards driver with it for a good clean uninstall and try the 355.82  driver to see if that helps in any way

    good luck

Sounds like the cpu/gpu is overheating. Do the fans on the card spin up to max speed when you lose signal to the monitor?

I don't ever use it   all I install is the cards driver and PhysX   under the custom install  ,  like I say if you google it around loosing signal is posted a lot with the 900 cards  or bad ports like dvi pr dosplay ports seeming gone bad or not working .

    some more examples

      https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/955109/980ti-oc-quot-no-signal-quot-mid-game/

[I may try that remove/ uninstall  PrecisionX  and see if my little issue clears up  seeing the 1st win 7  is the only OS with it  and the only OS with the card with the issue I described above , hmmmmm....]   if your using it give it a try as well ??

you may look some more up on it and may find a trick to resolve ??

Sorry for the late reply everyone. Yeah, I noticed the graphics card was overheating even when standing by idle. I don't know what's causing it to overheat because I don't have GeForce Experience installed. I just installed the Corsair H80i v2 for the CPU and now the GPU Core temperature according to Open Hardware Monitor now never rises above past 40 degrees Celsius when playing games but I still get pretty low frames on old games that are able to run at 3840x2160 @ 60fps like RE6 that used to run pretty solid @ 60fps that now runs more around 35-45fps. I don't have the card registered on the EVGA site, but I was wondering if I could still RMA it? I don't know what else to do anymore.

Yes. You can do a guest rma.

What is the Guest RMA process and why does it help?

    • No registration is required to submit a request.
    • Warranty submission is done through a simple online form without contacting tech support through the phone.
    • You know if you're under warranty right away, if you're under warranty you can submit an RMA.
    • You can work with EVGA's legendary tech support for troubleshooting if you wish, or you can skip and send your product in.

    Guest RMA

got to admit that's a nice deal evga offers    [+1]   who else looks out for you like that  being out side of the original buyer  .  submit check s/n tells manufacture date that shows it still under there 3 year  warrantee and then honors it ??   nice  ..

I've sent a ticket to tech support(found the serial number on the graphics card and registered) and they've answered. I could either take it apart and put new thermal paste on it or return it to them. I think I'll just do the return since I'm not too familiar with taking apart graphics cards. Granted, I could probably just google how to do it but I think for now the easiest way would be to just return it. Thanks everybody for helping me out, hopefully this will be solved within the next couple of weeks!

I sent in a 980ti hybrid a few weeks ago and got a 980ti hybrid back.
The 980ti sc I sent in a while before that was replaced with a 1080.
The only acceptable newer cards would be a 1070 or 1080. The 1060 is much slower...

It all depends on what they have in stock.
