The U.S. navy is not having a good year. This is the 4th collision this year and the 2nd since June. As a retired vet my heart goes out to the 10 missing sailers families and their crew.

Pray for the sailors and their family

NAVY needs a full review of their SOP on collision readiness and busy ports of call

I cannot understand why the Navy ships are unable to outmaneuver the cargo ship before it is too late --

These huge ships can take up to a mile or so to turn depending on speed.
But unless the news just did not cover these things before it seems like a lot more crashing than normal.

I expect there will be policy changes for busy traffic lanes for the Navy in the very near future.

It's too bad this happened and it almost sounds like the start of a joke....did I ever tell you about the time the US Destroyer ran into a merchant ship?

This seems to be a recurring theme... Hopefully they find all lost sailors.

I hope they can find them, not good at all.
Would think in this day and age with radar and all the tech we have, things like this would not happen.
It is a US Navy destroyer for goodness sake, good thing a boat loaded with explosives did not attack it.
What does this say to our enemies...

Im all for supporting our troops, not our politicians. IMOO, its our education system, too much emphasis on pointless book smarts vs common-sense to backup that book smarts. Kids, and young adults not held and taught to be responsible for their own.

Taugh love goes a long way, even in bootcamp, last I heard, bootcamp isnt what it use to be, and some kids had their Mommy call the and sue the Sgt for being too hard on their kid. I mean no disrespect but our military has too many green cupcakes.....

Couldn't agree more. A destroyer can maneuver circles around one of those cargo chips and then some.

Good to see that accountability is being pursued despite the fact that the commander was due to retire in September.

It should be a permanent relive of command of any US Navy Captain that fails to avoid a collision like that. The US Navy destroyer should of been able to out maneuver that oil tanker. If i was the owner of that oil tanker, i would be firing it's Captain.

What baffles me is that with all the technology that is on those ships they did not detect the oil tanker in time to maneuver? I understand large ships can take a long time to turn but seriously these are U.S. Navy Destroyers that cost hundreds of millions of dollars and they can be "surprised" by an oil tanker?  It's really a shame that people keep dying for what seems to amount to complacency of officers and/or those who are supposed to be monitoring the radar/sonar/sensors/whatever.  I'm honestly surprised the Admiral wasn't removed from his command after the 2nd incident.

I also am not a fan of them blaming it on the military being under funded. I work for a defense contractor so I know what the government gets billed. If anything they need to reduce costs through smarter procurement and holding contractors accountable more to stay within program budgets. Way to much tax payer money is wasted through fraud, misappropriation of funds and just blatant waste.

Yeah there is some serious issues with these incidents.  Something about it just doesn't sit right with me or we are only getting 5% of whats really going on.  I'm a Navy vet, but was never on a ship, but this still hits close to home as I now have two brothers on the blue side of the Navy.  I just don't understand how something like this happens, especially twice in such a short time frame.  I have heard of possible hacking involving navigation systems briefly over NPR but we may not hear much more than that.  May those sailors rest in peace.

Fox was touting a lot of the hacking nonsense, the Navy as so far firmly denied it.

They haven't decided yet on the USS McCain, they discovered the ship's superstructure was warped enough to break its radar pad alignment so they will have to figure out how badly.

One of the those missing is a local man.
We went to the same high school. This is really hitting close to home.
I did not know the family, but I sure feel so bad for them.
All the families must be knotted up inside with worry.

I knew when I typed hundreds of millions I was lowballing it probably but wow.   This goes back to my previous point. The military is blaming these types of events on a lack of funding which to me is baffling. We're practically a military industrial complex nation as it is. Entire towns are formed around military bases that could be closed. Local economies grow based on military manufacturing such as the tanks we keep building yet the military says they don't need them anymore.
Government always tries to take more money to throw at a problem rather than taking the logical but harder way of reigning in costs and overruns.

It's a damn shame people have to keep dying because of these types of mistakes.

It's very sad that this happened and really I don't understand why it's happening so often. I mean after the USS Cole you would think we would have a wide area we wouldn't allow ships near. Seems like now we will let any boat close enough to bump into our ships.
