Im using a 4way-SLI Classified evga mobo with a i7 3820.
I have an itch to upgrade but to move to Ryzen would be too much, I would need all new water blocks, memory, and a motherboard.

I was looking at the i7 4960x on eBay for 200 bucks. From what I've seen online I can OC to 4-4.5GHz no problem.

Is there going to be an advantage to this upgrade? My convern is that the i7 3820 may bottleneck my next video card upgrade (two Vega 64'), currently I have three R9 290s.

So who has a 4960x and what do you all think about upgrading such an old system?

So I went from a 3820 to a 4820 Ivy and although I gained 3.0 pcie lanes for my SLI, my overclock went down. I actually had my Sandy all the way to 5 gig. So it can be hit or miss with individual cpu chips, but the 3820 was a great overclock-er for me. I also moved from an X79 FTW to a Dark. The Dark is move stable for overclocking. So depending on how far your sandy will go, it might not be worth it, but $200 is about what I paid for my 2nd hand cpu.

That is me in the picture, anyone else ever pet a live Lion?

The  i7 4960x will give you True GEN3 as MhzManiac said above, I did this on my X79 Dark.
On my X79 Classified MB as long as I run the Click here to download force-enable-gen3.exe after Each Driver update and Before I enable SLI it still works even under Windows 10 Creator Edition.
I have a Pair of GTX 1080 installed in one and the other a Pair of GTX 1080 Ti Graphics Cards.
The only Draw back for me was having to reactivate Windows and it would not allow the use of the Key that was used for the old CPU.

Rather than spend 200 on the 4960x, get a E5-1650V2 xeon
They are multiplier and BCLK unlocked and has GEN3 support
It is pretty much the same CPU. Here is one for sale, offer 150$ and see if he takes it.

EDIT
I run both 3930K, e5-1650 and I have both 4930K and e5-1650V2
The xeons are server pulls and less likely to have been run overclocked.
And they are just as good as the i7, same cashe and all.

I went with a i7 4960X over the Xeon.
only because I know for a fact that my bios will support it and that in the long run its a i7 and not a Xeon ( wimped out).
Should arrive Monday, I got it with a 6 month protection plan on ebay for 200 bucks.

I tried pretty hard to locate some new graphic cards but the Vega is sold out. I will keep bidding, checking auto alerts and calling micro-center but I wont hold my breath.

Chicken lol
You did not say what MB you have, I have the xeons in an EVGA x79 classified, Asus x79 Sabertooth and Asus P9x79 WS
Either way you should be happy with your new CPU.
Good luck with it.

PS: Now you have all that CPU power, come join the EVGA BOINC crunching team and join in the challenges!!!

Power is too much money on Long Island ( most in the country). otherwise I would fold or mine.
I am using the EVGA x79 4-way SLI classified (151-SE-E779-K3) with the newer Bios/GUI.

Can't wait to re-run all my benchmarks and to play PlayerUnknown, seems to be a heavy hitter on the CPU.

Yeah I understand about things being expensive in NY.
If you ever need more cores, there are 8 - 12 core xeons that would work for you in a x79
E5-26xx CPUs, I have ran an E5-2670 in my EVGA x79 Classified. They do not OC much  the V2 work also.
A few steps with BCLK, 10 4 or 5, maybe 106.
There is an 8 core unlocked E5-1680 v2, but still are expensive even used.

Good luck and have fun with your new CPU!
