    Try the PCIe-M.2 adapter.

M.2 on the X99 Classy is quirky beast to say the least. If you browse the forum you'll find plethora of posts with regard to various M.2 drives. Boot support for NVMe is so so, while conflicts between chipset and M.2 NVMe devices, sadly, were never fixed completely.

I have 1TB EVO 960 and 512 GB 950 Pros. Working like a charm (as data drives), but using PCIe adapters.

    From X99 Classified's Manual:
-M.2 Socket 2 (Slot M) shares signal distribution from PE5, please select the operational mode in BIOS setup menu
    -PE5 – x4 (Gen 2 only, 4 lanes pulled from PCH)

Uh oh, it's an outdated type of M.2 slot.....It should only support SATA & PCIE AHCI M.2 SSDs (such as SM951 AHCI version)
So you should achieve a PCIE adapter card for 960PRO (I have an ASUS one)

BTW, X99 Micro2 (my model) 's M.2 slot is PCIE only. It can run PCIE AHCI & NVMe M.2 SSDs but doesn't supports SATA M.2 SSDs.
