Hello,
I've experienced a weird issue with my Supernova 550GS. During my play sessions of The witcher 3 (the only game I have that makes my rig sweat) I started hearing very loud noises coming from my PC in short intervals. After looking into this I found out that all of my components were behaving normally and concluded that the powersupply was the culprit. So basically after a while of playing the game the fan of the powersupply would ramp up to 100% for ~5-10 seconds every 3-10 minutes. For now I fixed the issue by turning eco-mode off, because there was nothing else that I could've done to fix it.

    Hi Rhazzarn!

First off I would like to welcome you to our forums. I myself have one of our power supplies with eco mode turned on and have never experienced this issue granted that I'm on an 850 G2. Does the fan ramping up happen continuously until eco mode is disabled?

Well, it happens when the psu is under load in eco mode. It doesn't happen under light loads/idling. And turning eco mode off makes it function normally under load.

I'd consider that normal, depending on the temperature (load) of your 550 GS..See the 550 GS Fan Noise Chart..Also, more on ECO Mode here in the EVGA FAQs..If you had a higher wattage PSU, it would likely not experience the issue as much, or at all, due to less load (heat) on the higher power unit..Witcher 3 is very demanding..That's why it's a good idea to always go a little 'overkill' when selecting a PSU based on your PC's estimated wattage requirement as shown in the EVGA Power Meter, or the Outervision PSU Calculator (the best calculator to use).

Sorry, I forgot to mention my specs. I'm using a locked core i5-6600 along with a gtx 1060 6gb (neither of which is overclocked). That's why I find the behavior really strange.

What model of power supply? I know it's kind of part of the system you really don't think of as a spec but would be really important to help troubleshoot the issue.

+1000, always go bigger than you think you need. using the evga psu tool it said 550w psu so i bought a 850 G3, i dont use eco mode since i would never hear the fan anyways, its not that loud in normal mode.

Well that I consider some awful advice to give people. I'm not even utilizing the 550w of my psu and you're trying to tell me that I should've went overkill on my psu.
I expected some good advice on this and you're just trying to feed me some bull. Next time I'll rather buy a unit from a different brand that has proper MCU to control the fan.
    Thanks

JonnyGURU PSU FAQ: Is there such a thing as too much power?

A: Often times, buying an "oversized" PSU is a good choice due to it's ability to perform even under higher temperatures, and a quieter fan because the unit is delivering a lower percentage of it's total capability.

The truth is that with my psu I already went overkill - 550w is far more than my sytem requires + it is a GOLD certified tier 1/2 unit (depends on where u look). I don't doubt that this unit could drive a 980ti or r9 fury, but a measly i5-6600 with 65w tdp and gtx 1060 with 120w tdp and a harddrive shouldn't use even half of the total wattage of the powersupply. The fact is that these problems were introduced only with eco-mode, not without it. As a funny coincidence, I posted this on the LTT forums and got an answer from johnnyguru himself.
Though I still didn't get any suggestions on how to fix it.

other than blowing it out real good doubt there is much YOU can do with it

myself i avoid eco mode anything
just something else to go wrong
and on/off button definitely out performs it..that button also doesn't cost extra

What's the problem w eco-mode? It's just a fan curve profile based on temps, right? It's wierd that yours goes crazy to 100% like that, but for the most part, isn't it a simple piece of technology?

you are free to buy from whom ever you want, no sweat on my brow, if your fans are going to 100% that means you are putting heavy load on it, your options are go with a larger rater PSU which will run cooler at your loads due to the fact the hardware is not being stressed as much or stay with what you have and use headphones so you dont hear the fans. its just that simple.

it really depends if you want absolute quite, i cant hear mine with eco mode off, not because my PC is real loud but because the fan is not really that loud.

I am having a similar issue with the NEX 650W 80+ model... except until last week, it wouldn't blow heavy even under load. And now it blows heavy idling. I bought the thing back in February of last year. Blew it out, still blowing heavy under idle. Really frustrating.

When did you select ECO? when OS was running or before BOOT?

If it stops when PSU is cool, it should be fine, then only once the temp of PSU requires the fan to run - it starts till PSU cools enough for fan to stop
