Hey guys,  I just got a new FTW3 and I've been having a problem with the GPU fan and wanted to see if you guys know if this is a defect or not, or something that may be fixable (bios or software) without returning the card.?

The GPU fan doesn't seem to be working like the Memory or Power fans.   When I go from 0 to 100% (or any speed for that matter) the GPU fan has anywhere from 2-5 seconds of delay before spinning up after I hit apply in the Precision XOC software.  The Power and Memory fans spin up instantly after hitting apply.  I also noticed 3 other odd behaviors, first unless I'm running at 100% the GPU fan runs ~200 rpm slower than the Power and Memory fans.  Second, if I manually set the GPU fan to a certain percentage say 50% I'll see the fan run at ~1600 rpm, but then later I will see the fan running at 1900 rpm (still in manual control) meanwhile my Power and Memory fans are running at a fairly consistent speed of around 1800 rpm @50%.  Third, when starting from 0% the GPU fan will ramp up after the delay but it goes crazy high RPMs and then comes down after a second or two, one test showed 4300 rpm rather than the standard ~3200 rpm @100%.  It seem the longer the delay the worse the RPM increase.  I can confirm that it is going much faster as the noise is louder than if I just ran the other fans at 100% and the GPU fan quiets down after a second rather than staying consistent faster.

I grabbed a screen shot of some of my testing that shows I'm not going crazy and imagining the noise and delays and speed differences.  You can see the GPU fan tachometer looks different from the Power and Memory tachometers.

I can confirm above oddities and that both master and slave bios suffer from them.

    To recap GPU fan:
    • Ramps to target speeds slower than the other two.
    • Spikes to above target speeds before normalizing. "Tachometer does not properly record these spikes"
    • Is running ~200 rpm slower at less than 100% condition.
In addition at 1150-1200rpm my GPU fan makes a high pitch sound as if my neighbor was vacuuming.
This annoying vacuum like noise inducing RPM also happens to be the first default fan speed at boot up and when GPU is getting slightly stressed.
So I'm hoping that a firmware update could at least fix some of these annoyances.

What's your fan curve, fan speed update timing and temp hysteresis?

It's in manual fan control, so the fan curves aren't the cause.  However they also exhibit the same behavior, ie the GPU fan running ~200 rpm slower when they are all running at the same fan speed percentage.  As for temperatures the tests are all done without load so they are sitting around 30.  I did see the same behavior when playing a game under load but I don't have any hard numbers.

I just moved one of the other fans to the GPU fan pin and it's acting the same so it's not a bad fan it's something internal.

I don't have any odd harmonics at the 1150-1200 rpm range though.

I've got strange harmonics in the 1200 rpm range as well for power and memory fans. Very annoying.

There is a VBIOS update for the fan on the FTW3 cards which I have emailed to you with instructions on how to install it. Please check your email and follow the instructions then we will see if that fixes your issue.

What about the fan harmonics? I've seen other users post about this issue, and it's easily reproducible. As I noted in another thread: for my card at least, when the power or memory fan is running around 30%, or ~1100-1200 rpm, the fan noise also has a slight, quiet whistling to it, similar in noise to when you blow air across the top of a bottle. If I raise or lower the RPM range by a couple hundred RPM, the noise goes away.

I've confirmed this happens even when just the power or the memory fan are running independently.

I work in a very quiet office so this noise is pretty apparent to me. The worst part is that ~1200rpm is kind of the perfect range to be running fans usually if you want a quieter system, but unfortunately this whistling noise ruins that.

Fan hysteresis is set to 3 already, also tried 5. Regardless, this unfortunately isn't caused by oscillation between rpm ranges due to temps, since the noise occurs 100% of the time if I just manually set either of those fans to 30%

This is interesting, I have had this odd issue ever since I got the FTW3 back in May 2017.
GPU fan takes a bit to enable itself and suddenly speeds up rapidly beyond it's maximum supposed fan RPM speed, and slowly calms down back to normal maximum fan RPM.

I actually finally posted my findings about it recently, I think this may be a widespread issue:

So is it possible we can expect a fix via a new version of Precision XOC?
    Thanks for looking into it.

    Hello!
I have exactly the same problem on my EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 DT GAMING! (BIOS version: 86.02.39.40.92)
Can you send me please an updated BIOS?

Already wrote. They sent me two versions of BIOS, but the problem was not solved. All the same.

Guess you'll need to decide if you want to rma the card or not.

I have been having this exact problem since I purchased the FTW3 on release.  GPU fan goes from 0 RPM to 4100 RPM instantly, before jumping back down randomly.  To be honest, the GPU never gets hot and is not related to the fan curve.

    Any help?

    Hi Folks,

I have the same issue. I updated the Bios based on instructions on this thread last night. It still happened later in the night. It exactly as described by @Hobiedamage and @HD0087. Did either of you come across a fix in the last year or 2?
