i wouldn't buy any 1070 that is over $415. i say this as anything over that price and you will have a better PPD/USD ratio buying a 1080ti founders, not to mention the 1080ti already has the best PPD/Watt. that is unless you are comparing hybrid models.

Yes newegg has PNY 1080ti's for 659.99 right now.  Founders, but they claim they only have a 1 year warranty.  So tempting..if only they took my Canadian visa still as I do not want to liquidate ETH on a down turn.

Re: We'll catch you soon enough. 2017/06/19 20:58:37 (permalink)
Yep, 1070s are too pricy now - so my next build (I pulled the trigger on buying the parts this morning) I'm experimenting with one of those Zotac sorta-short 1080 cards in the "short" slot, and moved to "long" 1080s for the other 2 slots.
I *almost* pulled the trigger on a pair of 1080 ti though.

I'm abandoning the Intel experiment - all 3 of the cards in that machine are providing VERY poor PPD, even the one with PCI-E 3.0 x16 is under 500k PPD on most work units, and one of the 2 in the x4 slots is consistantly under 300k (the other one is pretty close to the 16x slot) - so I get to shift some "mining" stuff into that MB and shift those 1070s over to my current "spare" AMD board.
I am pretty sure I went too low on the CPU - but getting much higher on the CPU starts getting WAY Expen$ive on the Intel side - the cpu IN the thing was almost identical cost to my usual A10-7860K quad-cores despite being only a dual-core.
Up side, I didn't pay any more for that base rig than my usual AMD build, so as a mining machine it won't have been a bad investment.
I was  also underwhelmed badly by the iGPU - it only provided about 1/3 of the performance I expected, and I was only expecting half the performance of an AMD iGPU - plus Intel still believes in locked multipliers, which doesn't let me adjust the balance between the iGPU and the CPU sides.

I don't look at FE - they put the fan way too far from the end of the board, so they wouldn't get enough cooling in my 3-card rigs - the middle card would be VERY starved for air.
They're fine for 1-card or 2-card rigs or riser rigs though, and blower-style cards can be nice for rigs in a case (like my gaming rig).

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

For folding an intel i3 is more than enough... what was this "experiment" anyway?

Re: We'll catch you soon enough. 2017/06/20 10:54:07 (permalink)
It was my first Intel build in about 15 years - wanted to see if an Intel rig with the same ballpark cost as my usual AMD platform would offer better folding performance - while not sacrificing too much iGPU performance to toss at Moo Wrapper.
Going with the bottom-end i3 would have bumped the price up to about 25% more than my usual AMD option - it was hard enough trying to keep it in the SAME price range, and in the end I still ended up about $10 more on the MB/CPU/RAM than the last AMD build I did, or the ones I just ordered for my next build (triple 1080 this time, another experiment - will the Zotac "mini" 1080 be short enough to let the middle card stay cool - if not, I get to do some card rearrangement and make the Zotac a "slot 1" card in another machine and go back to using ITX-length 1070s for slot 3).

20/20 hindsight though I should have gone with a different variation on that Gigabyte board - they have one for about $15 more that has 8x to the second slot, AND dual PS/2 type connections, I'd probably have liked that one better - but given what I was seeing on folding performance, I suspect it would not have changed the results of the experiment.
The experiment failed on ALL counts (mildly on the folding side, VERY badly on the iGPU side), but I always knew I could use it for other stuff as a worst-case option.

I've already moved the pair of EVGA 1070 SCs in that rig to a different rig, the 3'd is a Gigabyte ITX that has it's next home assigned, but I probably won't get around to swapping it out 'till late today or sometime tomorrow.

I've seen a couple good reviews on the PNY founder 1080ti cards - dunno if they would be any better than the EVGA version, but I've had fairly good luck over the years with the few PNY GPUs I've ever bought.

toddryoungblood, you hit #2 in production for a single user on the 19th! soo close to that #1 spot i know you'll get there soon enough. also Curecoin is now putting out 3x the PPD of EVGA, which is just mind blowing!

I held #1 for less than a day. I hope to expand to keep it (adding about 20M PPD in the next month or two) relatively soon.

wow, another 10x 1080ti's or ~$9,000.

question for you though, how did you decide to scale your folding rigs? two to a tower or more?

Two per server chassis, building them out in server cabinets. I have one cabinet filled, 3 more available. 10 chassis per cabinet.

Shoot, I'm already having enough issues trying to hold on to 2% of team production.

 I hate you.

Up side - new router should be on my doorstep in an hour or two, hopefully it will solve my "slow upload speed" issues vs. the current "ancient firewall/gateway/router" box.
The pair of 1080 ti for the new rig should help some too. 8-)

Worse than that - more like 17 or 18 new 1080 ti - they're ballpark 1.1 MPPD cards not 2M.

With the server outages this month it's hard to tell for sure, but it looks like Ed might have added at least one new rig to his farm - 2-3 MPPD or so I'd estimate.

To be picky, if you go by the "24 average" the top 18 are managing a hair over 50%.

I guess that's why some folks call us the "heavy hitters", especially Ed.

i just wonder when will PPD start to lvl off? FLDC has fallen quite a bit to a value it was over a month ago, so at this point its stalled out, and CURE hasn't really moved at all. BTC is kinda in the same boat not really moving much up or down from $2500. though if you look at total value sense the 1st of this year BTC and FLDC combined increased 12x in value. if you match that to production then it would be 2 Billion PPD, just 3 times Curecoins current production.

It probably wont for a while - it's still quite a bit more profitable to fold than it was 3 months back before the price rises (except for Bitcoin) went into extreme mode.

It also takes a while to ramp folding production up, and a fair bit of $$$.

I don't anticipate it going completely flat, but I can see a probability of the RATE of increase dropping a lot in 2-3 months or so if profitability declines enough.

I know I’ve got two machines in the pipe and then I’m one building for awhile. The price is just not there. (Plus im out of rooms to put them in)

I still have some infrastructure work to do on the electrical side, but right now I'm kinda tapped out on funds for my "next build" anyway (waiting on a FLDC spike, hopefully later this month).

I also need to get my evap sorted out, it doesn't seem to be putting out very cold air - pretty sure I need to replace the pads with better ones than I put in it this spring - as temps have been real marginal with the last month of serious "heat wave" that led into the current "hottest part of the summer" temps.

I did find a use for the "failed experiment" Intel setup - it's handling my pair of 1080 ti cards OK.
It's pushing both the real cores VERY close to max most of the time and the hyperthread cores pretty hard all the time but it doesn't seem to be capping out on the CPU.

Current project has been doing some shifting, I've given up on trying to get "mixed rigs" going under LINUX so I'm shifting the folding GPUs over to AM3-based motherboards as much as I can with the long-term intent of recycling the FM2+ motherboards as non-folding all-AMD rigs (probably for MooWrapper, possibly for mining) once I get enough AM3 setups going to asorb ALL of my folding cards.

that spike you are looking for went the wrong way today... you honestly should have pulled out while it was still ~800-900ish. also on the electrical side of things i have a new "project" that i started building today. and in theory my electrical is a 240V 30A PDU which has the power capacity of 5,800W continues load.

Let us know how the 230v works out for you in efficiency.  I have a rather open walled detached garage that I use as a shop and office and it would not take much for me to wire in a 230v.

Oh its working great on my 5 gpu rig so far. Temps are cooler and it basically pushes a gold rated supply to platinum. You just have to make sure you have a capable power supply and if it has that switch for 120/240 you set it properly.

220 offers about 2% better efficiency on most gold-rated power supplies.

Only reason I'm wiring up some 220 circuits is that the electric heaters in this place run on 220 - 20 amp circuits, I feel quite comfortable running 2 rigs that eat 5.6 amps each (11.2 amps at 110, probably 5.5 at 220 due to efficiency gain in the PS) and a third rig that will eat less than 5 on those circuits - plus positioning works out well to move my A2 farm and the "big rig" triple R9 290 to those circuits.

Re: We'll catch you soon enough. 2017/07/16 14:45:06 (permalink)
rofl, you still have a need for an electric heater?! sounds to me like a perfect circuit to expand more rigs onto to me.

jokes aside there are more benefits to the higher voltage besides just efficiency though. the primary one being the drastically increased power limit of the circuit. you basically double the power rating of the 120V circuit without having to spend more on higher gauge wire. and if you want to start getting even more technical a 3-phase service can do even more fun things to increase power usage and maintain a relatively low power bill if you can maintain balanced loads across the three phases.

No, I don't need the heaters - which is why the circuits are getting rewired for outlets.

I don't where you live, but you pay more for a 3 phase service here. Won't save any money here with 3 phase.
I like 3 phase motors and compressors, eliminate the starting circuits, lots more starting torque. Lot less to troubleshoot.
You can make you own three phase with a capacitor bank, not worth the time and expense.

3 phase service is generally only used for HIGH power connections by default in the US.
Most folks have no need or use for it, as it DOES cost a fair bit more to set up and install.

208/230v and 480v are the most common 3phase found here in NY, more than likely everywhere in the USA
Commercial building with many, or large A/C units, pump motors or other motors, typically will have 3phase service.
Stores with row after row of fluorescent lighting will have 3phase service.
Of the thousands of homes and businesses I have been to, I never came across a house with 3phase service, ever.
I have seen a couple IBM building where we had 277V single phase lighting controlled by 24V relays.
It all depends on what the building was built for. 3 phase equipment is generally cheaper, has no starting components, no potential relays or starting capacitors.

Anyway back on topic.
Yeah looks like it will not be too long before cure catches up and passes EVGA.
I did not believe they would take off and it really would happen.

welp, it looks like Curecoins explosive growth has come to a stand still, finally. the team has averaged ~708 million PPD over the last week. new eta on overcoming EVGA is 1.5 Months.
