It may come down to clock to clock and core vs core performance between this gen of CPUs. For me, core count wasn't as important compared to PCIe 3.0 lanes and clock speed. So in this line up AMD has some serious offerings that appeal to what I look for in a CPU. Too an extent, price isn't as much of an issue for me either, but with intel making $999 the starting point to run multi GPU plus what ever PCIe based storage compared to AMD's offering of 64 PCIe lanes, more cores, and better clock speeds for $200 less is making me seriously consider team red for the first time in my 10 years of building computers.

Food for thought, if you didn't need to overclock, AMD has a better option for 1P workstations for the same $1000 price range as Intel: AMD Epyc 7401P, 24-cores-48-threads, 2.0GHz base, Turbo 1-core Turbo at 3.0GHz, all-core Turbo 2.8GHz, 155/170W TDP Intel Xeon Silver 4116, 12-cores-24-threads, 2.0GHz base, Turbo is 3.0 3.0 2.8 2.8 2.7 2.7 2.7 2.7 2.4 2.4 2.4 2.4, 85W TDP TDP variation is a but interesting though; considering the latter, so Intel was only able to raise the base clock of their 12-core die from 2.1GHz to 2.9GHz for i9-7920X despite a starting TDP of 85W. Had TDP went up with frequency linearly, it would be 117W, but the i9 is up at 165W, so the voltage definitely went up to compensate. Does not bode well for the 14-, 16- and 18-core i9's.

I also am interested to see core to core performance. I have kind of decided on a new build already so it will probably put me away from wanting to upgrade for a few years. Hopefully when I do going from 4 cores to 18 or more will be a reality and something for a reasonable price.

I like Intel but their prices are a bit too high. If I can manage to get the money together I am going to buy Threadripper but of course I want to see official reviews first.

Yeah that's what I was suspecting on the announcement of the i9 SKU's. Personally I just can't understand the need to sell a i9 10 core+ CPU as an enthusiast overclocking chip. I just don't see there being significant overclock potential compared to a 4-6 core i7 CPU. And with this generation you seem to lose more features I the "I" series that would appeal for a workstation compared to the Xeon series.

The extra money for the RAID 1 and 5 is only if you want to use VROC (Virtual RAID on CPU). You can still use the "standard" RAID in the X299 chipset without any extra cost.

If you buy an Intel Sky-X chip, you are required by the Federal Government to register your said chip with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

I am sorry but if that is the case, it was not listed in the fine print or is new since I purchased it.

Though at this point, nvme raid is totally unconfirmed for threadripper. It would be a huge disappointment if x399 didn't have this but since amd hasn't made a peep about it I'm kinda worried.

Check out the Asus X399 thread in industry news. Asus includes a m.2 RAID Card! Looks like it has room for 4!
And no stinkin' Dongle! Yay!

It has a dimm.2 card but raid is not confirmed on it, at least not that I have seen. It's just a card to get the m.2 slots up and away from the pcie slots.
