I don't think 4k is worth is till those HDR 144+ panels are released and possibly the next gen on gpu's.  And if you can afford these upgrades when they release. I think with the Ultra wides there's a few with good ones with enough refresh rate currently to game on, but also pricey. Personally I think 144-165hz 1440p is the current sweet spot for SLI 1080 ti's.

I haven't upgraded monitor yet because HDR and hz.  Theres an acer thats supposed to come out thats 4k, gsync, 144hz, HDR...oh and Tobii eye tracking.  Its called the x27.  You may have noticed the "27" in the name though so its not perfect but pretty damn close.  The price will probably make your eyes bleed.

Just looked it up.  Looks like the PG27UQ and Acer will be very similar and directly compete with each other.  Hopefully the PG27UQ wont have Tobii.  I don't want to pay for that crap.

Personally the pixel density of 4K at monitor dimension sizes is just too much and UI scaling in a lot of programs isnt up to snuff. Game can and do look good but you all need some serious horsepower to run high settings at 4K and good frame rates. I prefer a middle ground of res vs. fps with high detail settings in game. So id much rather have an ultra wide 1440 or 1080 monitor. And have more horizontal real estate.

I have a 2k ultra wide and no regrets here. Only wish it was 100hz. 4k would be nice but I don't see myself leaving ultrawide soon

Would a single GTX1080 Ti really struggle with an ultra wide 1440p monitor?  I have been looking at the ASUS and the Acer 1440p UW G-Sync options for some time now.

It won't struggle with that but it won't deliver 200 fps either :)
Seriously, it won't struggle with an ultrawide.

That's good to know.  I have two 1080ti's but I am hesitant on relying on SLI.  I did that with two original GTX Titans and it didn't pan out well for my triple 1440p setup at the time.  Figured 1440p ultra wide is the better way to go and G-sync seems like it would be a great benefit as well.

I am currently on a dell 27" g-sync 1440p monitor. I am on one GTX 1080. It is a dream!

I would say it depends on how much desk space you want to devote to it. I would like to see ultrawide's come along more in gsync offerings, but they do look nice! I am personally satisfied with my 2k monitor, but I would consider a comparable ultrawide because I have been thinking of eliminating my second 1080p monitor.
