I'm looking for a 27", 2560x1440, 120Hz+, IPS, low response time (but prefer not TN), and full color gamut ...and decent quality control (which seems to be a problem these days). I have pretty much narrowed it down to ASUS PG279Q or Acer Predator XB271HU, but I really can't decide between these two.

Some side-by-side observations:

  • They are at the top of the range of what I want to spend, and both are about the same price ($50 difference is not enough to sway me one over the other).
  • The ASUS has been out for nearly 2 years now, the Acer is a little more recent I believe, but not much.
  • Both are 27", 2560x1440, similar Hz, same response time, both IPS, and both have G-Sync.
  • Both have 100% sRGB.
  • Both have had quality control issues, particularly with back light bleed. Some blb is to be expected, but both companies seem to ship monitors without a care of how bad it is, so it's a bit of a lottery either way.
  • ASUS has a known problem with customer service if anything goes wrong, Acer I'm not so sure about. I will be buying through Amazon (I get an additional 5% off) and Amazon are very good with accepting returns / issuing replacements if there are issues on first receipt, so that offsets the ASUS crap service issue a little.
  • The Acer has nice thin bezels top and sides, but a fairly big ugly bezel at the bottom. ASUS bezels are a little wider I believe, but without the big lower bezel with the corny "predator" logo. I'm only going to run a single monitor though, so not really an issue either way.
  • The bases don't matter, I'll be going for a 3rd party stand, and both monitors are vesa compatible.
  • I want IPS for color accuracy, and 120+Hz for gaming obviously. I don't really care about overclocking it to extremes, so that's not really a factor either.

Seems a pretty close match!

I've read the ASUS on-board UI is much more user-friendly, and the ASUS works better out of the box, whereas the Acer may need some additional tuning to get it right, and can be somewhat difficult to coax the best performance out of it initially.

I've been using an ASUS PB278Q for the last couple of years and have had zero problems with it, it's been great.

At this point I am leaning toward ASUS - slightly higher refresh rate, and my existing ASUS monitor has been great, and it has the eye-care thingy, for what it's worth lol...

Anyone care to offer reasons pro/against either model?

I don't have any experience with Asus monitors but I have had plenty of Acers and never an issue.  Everything that I have read gives the edge to the Acer outside of the OSD and out of the box color calibration.  I know there's been some issue with the Asus and poor QC - maybe that has been solved?  I would assume that with it being a newer model it might have more "kinks" worked out and a better panel.  Also running the Asus at 165Hz it does increase the response time to 6ms.  The Acer will also run 165Hz too though.

Thanks! There's something about the name "ViewSonic" that screams 'cheap' to me - even though the specs on that model look great and I have no reason to think otherwise, but any brand name that ends in "-Sonic" is going to make me think in the back of my mind 'cheap budget low quality'. Amazing how a brand name can make such a negative difference when the product itself doesn't deserve it whatsoever.

Both the ASUS and Acer models have had QC issues. I just read that both models use the same supplier of the panel itself lol.

After reading some more reviews and youtube videos (example), I am leaning towards ASUS - the OSD, the calibration out of the box, the aesthetics.. hmm.

    Thanks again.

    Anyone else?

I can't give insight on Acer, but I've had the Asus PG279Q for about 3 months now and I love it. No issues at this time, there is slight blb in corners but can only tell in dark room when display is on with no image being displayed. Once there is an image can't tell what so ever.
I also liked the aesthetics of the Asus much more as well.

If it was me choosing between the two, I'd have to go with the ASUS.  I've been using the ASUS PG278Q since it was first made public.  It's been flawless.

I have a 120Hz Acer (my ASUS replaced it as primary) I've also been using for many years which has performed well and looks good too, but these days, I would go with the ASUS.

Viewsonic is the worst company of all time. Do not buy anything from them.

Asus over Acer for sure. If those two brands are your only choices.

Ok thanks for all the input - I just ordered the ASUS PG279Q... I had $175 in credit sitting there in Amazon Rewards points, $500 from that lottery scratch ticket, and I'll get another ~$40 credit in rewards points for buying it.. so all up with tax included it cost me about $100 out of pocket lol.. and free shipping. Winning!  ..and my Mrs will get my PB278Q so she's going to be a happy camper as well.

ASUS is a fine choice for monitors, (not crazy about their motherboards though).

Well that was a FAIL... PG279Q - severe back light bleed AND a line of dead pixels near top left corner - look at these pictures - how the hell does that get through quality control?

Contacting Amazon for replacement ..although wondering if I should just do a return.

..edit: Amazon accepted return and replacement no questions asked, and they will pay all shipping and pick it up from my home address. Also offered full refund, but I'll try one more and see if it's any better. I actually suspect the one I received 'new' may have been a return - the specs sticker that normally goes on the screen was sitting in the box separate, and a small corner of styrofoam packing inside the box was also broken off, and not by me....

ASUS get your shirt together - how do you think it's acceptable to charge US$750 for something like this? Thank heavens I got it through Amazon and don't have to deal with ASUS customer non-service.

Bad luck there.... quality levels appear to be really -REALLY-  bad across all the current IPS panels

Was looking for exactly the same specs as you about a month ago, but gave up on the IPS panels due to the current QC issues... nobody is putting out anything decent!

I really needed something since getting my 1080Ti to hold me over for about 12-14 months until the next gen panels arrive (and longer if the QC problems persist)...
-->so I just went with the 2560x1440 144hz GSync Dell TN  no BLB, no dead pixels and no worries... payed $400, and now I can relax until somebody starts putting out quality

Yeah the screen I received is one of the worst examples of BLB I've seen.. and a bunch of dead pixels on top! If the 2nd one is a dud, I'll ask for a refund and reassess the situation from there.. so disappointing though.

Maniac-vvv- which model Dell is that? S2716DG? That TN model is nice except for color accuracy - ranges from 72-82%, which is not going to work for me.

Until such time as -all- the major manufacturers get their act together and STOP shipping junk at the high end above $800....  I ain't buying!
I want a 4k 120hz IPS GSync panel with QDot... and for my $1500-$2000 I expect zero defects when I plug it in

    At $750 for a 27" I expect zero defects, let alone $1,500-$2,000 for a monitor! :D

I'm not getting my hopes up on the replacement. Reading reviews on Amazon of people having 4 in a row bad and just giving up. I wonder how long ago ASUS stopped manufacturing PG279Q and are just recycling returned ones until some poor schmuck doesn't return it...  Sounds exactly like something ASUS would do.

Its not just Asus.... across the board they are all having very serious QC issues, or should I say they are dumping everything (including returns) on full price retail customers..

I was ready to buy, and willing to pay big dollars.....  nobody had anything I felt would unbox and be hassle free, so I just didnt buy.

What really is bad... these companies are the SAME ones coming out with the newer models THAT I WANT.
They have -seriously- damaged their branding with their current quality control and shipping policies.....

Really Asus? that was boxed up and shipped retail? with dead pixels too?
And with that kind of quality and uniformity... Im sure the colorspace is just fine right? Oh and its going to last for more than a few months right?

So when you -DO- come out with the monitor at the specs I really want at $1700+ I'm supposed to just pre-order it up huh?

    Thanks Xray :)  I took a look:

Samsung have a nice 27" model CHG70 which I'd go for except it's FreeSync (AMD).

The 2 good models I found on LG site were also both FreeSync ...grrr.

This is exactly why I haven't pulled the trigger on either the Asus nor the Acer  27's -- I keep seeing QC horror stories from both of them on the Gsync models .....

That's a bummer Nereus.  Since it's the monitor you really wanted, I would try a replacement at least once to see if you get a good one.

That's unfortunate, I was really hesitant on purchasing PG279Q as well, debated for a year before finally pulling trigger due to my old monitor went out. Luckily mine only had slight blb in corners with no dead pixels, so I decided to keep it, didn't want to go through the multiple returns and get one as bad as that one.

Mine is dated Nov. 2016, not sure if that is a newer batch than the one you received. I also made sure there was no dents/dings, scratches/scrapes in the box at all upon delivery otherwise I was going to not accept it. The UPS delivery guy acknowledge a lot of them were being return so they were trying to be cautious about handling them.

I was going to look for a new monitor but I am very interested in AMD Threadripper provided I can save the cash so a new monitor will be on hold for a while longer.

I been checking out monitors too.  ASUS rep on Amazon replied to a few customers saying "Every NEW PG279Q sold in North America must now pass a visual inspection in a darkened environment before it’s shipped to a vendor." I guess that was nothing but smoke being blown up people backside or amazon fulfillment center is shipping returns back out as a new product.

It's a good thing you purchased it from Amazon and not Newegg.

    Newegg return policy:

    Television and Monitor Dead Pixels:
  • Televisions or Monitors with 8 dead pixels or more can be returned for a replacement within 30 days from the purchase date.

That's complete bull from ASUS - either that, or they gave it the 'visual inspection' and said "yup, that's a piece of cr@p monitor, box it up and send it out." lol, OR, as you said, returns are being shipped back out again in the hope someone will keep it, although that's more Newegg's style, not Amazon (which is another reason I rarely use Newegg now).

     - and that's a big part of the reason I got it from Amazon and not Newegg, also I get 5% credit when I buy at Amazon.

A replacement is being shipped, hopefully it's better quality ...but I'm not holding my breath.

I've had a couple of Acer monitors and never had any issues.  Unless I find something from Asus that is super cheap, I will not buy it because of their bad RMA service and support.
CHG70 is a nice monitor, but not sure about the curve though.  Never had any problem with Samsung monitors either.  I was thinking about the C32HG70, but the 1800R Curvature turned me off.  To me, curve monitors only good on 21:9 ultrawide monitors, not 16:9.

When I bought my Asus ROG the bezel wasn't glued correctly, but the display was perfect. I contacted newegg and they quickly sent another. That replacement display was perfect no issue.
