SATA 6Gb/s:
4 x SATA 6Gb/s, by Intel Z270 PCH
4 x SATA 6Gb/s, by Marvell 9235
SATA Express:2 x SATA Express, Intel Z270 PCH (Shared with SATA)I was just getting everything ready for my new build and doing some research, I would like to use all 8 SATA ports, 6 active drives (including 1 DVD 1 BluRay) and 2 hot plug ports. Will all 8 of these work at once? If so will anything else be disabled? Or could there be any issues? For this, if it will work, what settings should I use in BIOS?I need at least 3 PCIe slots thanks.

we could use a better logic chart on what disables what but a quick answer

don't use SATA express ports or add any M.2 cards and you should have  8 sata ports with the 4 marvell ports 4,5,6,7 AHCI function only

the MB has a  note on the three M.2 slots on what they disable (BIOS  I think will auto disable if it see cards there )

small M.2 is for bluetooth/wifi card
the two  others  top slot -bottom slot ( which I use ) are for SSD

Excellent Cordorb, that answers my question good enough for now.

I was confused because on the picture at newegg of the mobo it shows all of the bottom 4 SATA and 2 eSATA ports as express, as they are all look to be in the same header.

I have found some info on what some of the M.2 ports disable and I won't be using those at all for now, maybe down the road. This is going to be work/hobby/gaming rig, and as long as I can use standard SATA storage drives at will I am good to go!! I have the TT Hot swap drive cages for my storage swappers.

The manual should give me more info....NOW if the FedEx guy could get his truck here without floating away in the storm we're having I could get to work!!

    thanks man!!

SATA Express connections can either be used as 2 SATA ports, or one SATA Express port. This information is included in the manual, but if there is anything you feel is missing please let us know and we can either find the answers, or let you know where in the manual the information can be found.

Thanks Brandon, I have read through the manual and it does explain how the ports are used with SATA Express, the conflicts with the M.2 slots, and that is explained very clearly.

on page 51, "Intel SATA ports 0-3 on this platform natively support full ACHI and RAID functions"

    So that's a good thing,

thanks for the help man, I'm just making sure I absolutely understand every aspect of this setup before putting it together.

Now to make backups and get ready for my new build!! Got some nice DDR4 3200 and a sweet 7700k ready to be installed!!

you can use all 8 ports but be aware that those marvel ports can be finicky, you will not see the drives for the marvel while in the bios and may or may not see a splash screen when booting, not that you can go and change anything, they are AHCI only, no raid. for the intel ports you can use all 4 and just the small ports at the very bottom will stay empty, they are for the sata express connector. as for what you lose, nothing besides the bottom m.2 2280 slot, it shares with intel sata 2 and 3 only if sata m.2 is used and if a nvme m.2 is used you also lose pe3 and 5 (the two x1 pcie ports under the x16 gpu slot ) the upper m.2 share with the U.2 slot only so you can use all 8 sata ports plus a m.2 in that port, the manual is not clear if its a nvme only or sata and nvme. page 26 in the manual will list everything for you.

as for hot swap, you can do them with either the intel or marvel, the intel ones you can turn on and off in the bios, the marvel ones though are always on, no setting in bios that i can find to change that. i have tested that function on them though so i am 100% sure it works.
if you plan on using any add in cards for a raid card or such remember that all the pcie ports off the z270 are x1 only, even the bottom x16 size one is only x1 connection. the middle x16 size is a x8 connection slot and is shared with the top gpu slot and if you use that your gpu will drop to x8

The PDF manual version may be a more up to date version .
A good pict of the motherboard helps on the small manual errors.
ie a MB LED not the color your were expecting but that is only something you will look at if things not working correct.

    -------------------
Lets hope the next bios update will fix windows 10's  "safely remove hardware" trying to eject your SSD
    ------------------
Been a fun -interesting build with this MB using mostly only EVGA items
( not giving up my light wt Macally mouse and G19 keyboard as I switch between 5 other system )

Interesting, so what I should do is put my 1080 in the top X16 slot (is this one x16?), not use the second X16 slot at all (which is actually x8, and because it will change the top slot to X8 as well) and ALL of the remaining slots are all X1?
    lol

I can't wait till I try to get my 7700k overclocked and Corsair DDR4 3200 running at top speeds hehe!  I have been spoiled by ASUS's 1 button overclocking for the past few years, I missed tweaking out my EVGA X58 board though, gave it to my son when I bought the ASUS and he's still rock'n it darn near 24/7, that's 7 years that board's been running!

I have to go find that updated pdf manual for the Z270, my Corsair ram is not listed in this manual as "tested", it's the CMU16GX4M2C3200C16.....I hope it works cause I got it on sale. The timings and voltage are exactly the same as the "tested" Corsair 3200 16g modules.

    that is correct, from the top pe1 is x1, pe2 is x16 (from cpu and shared with pe4 ) pe3 x1, pe4 x8 ( from cpu and shared with pe2 ) pe5 x1 and pe6 x1 ( it is physically a x16 size but only has 1 pcei lane  )
if you need more sata ports you can add pcie x1 cards or up to a x8 card if you want to use the x8 pe4 (but then the gpu with run at x8 speed also )
as the board stands you can use a total of 9 drives (8 sata and M.2_1 ) with out any AIB.

Got it! Thanks man! I have enough info now to get it set up right from the beginning. I have a 1080, a Creative Zx and a Hauppauge TV card. I also have an add in SATA card but I don't think I will need it any more.

I read through the pdf guide, it is better in color BTW, and I don't see my exact RAM as being a tested module.  But with the voltage and timings being exactly the same as other similar tested Corsair kits I'm going to give it a shot.

I "may" be able to get it all put together next weekend, that gives me about two weeks to get everything reinstalled and set up the way I want it, just in time for my July vacation!! Then I can mess with some overclocks.

Thank y'all, you all have been very kind, patient and helpful.

Well it's raining today and possibly tomorrow so it looks like my yard work is delayed (wow I am so sad about that too) so I'm finishing my backups now and MIGHT try to build this puppy today!

lol..don't forget good ol Jamison, that's some good whiskey proper.

Well I got it all put together, booted up and got a FF 53 error...no post

SO THEN I plugged the ram in properly and now I'm in windows 10...lol

Say quad, if you don't mind I need to pick yer brain, it's been awhile since I messed with a board this nice and with so many features I just need to make sure I'm going in the right direction.  I THINK i have my RAM set up properly as I just selected the XMP profile #1, it's booting in at 3200 and seems to be working as windows installed with no issues.

For now, and until I can get to know the board better with the new system the 7700 is at auto, so it's stock.

    BUT

    1) I installed windows 10 in UEFI mode? This is my first time with that, is that the way to go? Or should I reinstall in legacy?

    2) Also, I have this HUGE EVGA Z270 logo splash screen and I can't see the post, and as far as I can see in the 1.03 BIOS there is no way to get rid of it? Or am i just missing it? Does disabling fast boot get rid of it? (I don't want to try to much until I get a little better acquainted with this BIOS.) I would like to fast boot with NO splash screen if possible.

    3) And this is probably a stupid question but Should I have RED LED's lit on  my mobo? I have Red, Blue, Green, Red, is that bad?

thanks for taking the time to help me out man, it's been wayyy to long since my last build and i don't want to screw anything up.

Leave it in ufei mode, that's the only way to use GPT partitions. Also if you want ever use the m.2 slot for a boot drive you need ufei
The splash screen is built in, you can turn it off, quite mode I believe, but then you just see this single line of text on the screen, no other info. It also takes some time while the bios does its checks.
Leds are fine, one is telling you which bios is selected, one or two are showing power to the board and one is showing pcie slot active .
There some misprints in the manual also. Lol

    lol yeah I noticed that.

BUT all in all I'm pretty happy, this 7700k fly's right out of the box, it's stock at 4.2 and turbo's up to 4.5, with my RAM running at 3200 I don't see any need to mess with that CPU right now. Got to run some stability tests to make sure the ram is up to par but so far....I'ma happy camper!!

thanks for all the assistance man, very helpful!!

Now to install my THOUSANDS of programs...yikes

you have the k and a OC friendly board, getting 4.6~4.8 should real easy on pretty much stock voltage, higher you will need good cooling and more volts, i have the 7600k and it hit 4.6 easy, temps are good and its rock solid stable.

    Hey Quad! How’s it goin.

I got it all tweaked out and all my programs (except for my flight simulator which is no rush) installed and everything is working great!  The more I mess with it the more I love this board!!

I ended up putting a StarTech PCI Express 6gps controller in slot 1 to give me 2 extra SATA ports and now ALL "10" drives work without issue...lol, also I got a second USB 3.0 card/bracket for the extra 3.0 extension port on the motherboard so I can use all of the USB’s, except for the Type-C.

EVERYTHING works and the PC is FAST at stock!  What more could I ask for.

Now I have been reading about over clocking the 7700k, I ran LinX for a few cycles and my temps got to and held about 65c at full tilt, and it recovered well so my cooler seems to be working. I ran a 3D Mark benchmark (Timespy) and it scored 7118 which is in the 86% percentile which about right where it should be, temps on the GPU hit 70c. The highest 3D Mark Score with this type of system had dual Titans and a 4.9 over clock and scored like 32,000….so I won’t be getting there…lol

What I am concerned about is my RAM, I have it set to XMP 1 (3200) which is what it was sold as, but the one thing I have read most which causes some people unstable over clocking on this type of system is the RAM speeds.

I’m gonna make a clone of my system before I try anything.

good ideal. i used corsair 3000mhz ram, the speeds are getting to the point now that i think its more marketing fluff now, save for a few programs or if your using a ram drive i dont think you would see any difference in the higher speeds.
which cooler you using on your cpu?

Note: that 70c temps I hit on the 3D Mark was on the GPU, I misread the 3D Mark graph, I just ran it again and my CPU didn't get above 56c but my 1080 did get to 69 this time. I'm such a goofball sometimes.

It's been so long I can't remember the exact name of my cooler, it's a CoolerMaster water block one and they don't make my exact model any longer I looked into buying a new one when I got the chip, BUT it's the only one they made with a push/pull dual fan setup. One fan in front of the radiator and one behind, it works awesome!!

ya know, I have been lookin through the BIOS, and sip'n on a cold Dos Equis, and it looks like all I would have to do is drop my RAM speed to someplace around 2800 and then set my CPU target frequency to 46 on all cores and leave everything else at auto.  I MIGHT have to tweak the blck or lower my CPU voltage, IF I'm reading some of these guides correctly?
Unless I'm missing something, it looks to be that easy. the target frequency of the 7700k is 45 out of the box.

And I am having ONE issue, for some reason, every now and then, my intel nic just stops connecting to the internet. Windows can't detect the problem, restarting all of my equipment does nothing to help, BUT if I switch to the Killer nic, it works. Strange, but not a deal breaker....I mean I am using like every port on the board so...yeah

i would leave the ram were its at unless you are using all 4 slots. leave the bclk were its at, it also controls the pcie so trying to oc it can cause gpu issues. i would leave everything at default and increase the multiplier to 47 and set your core volts to adaptive if it fails or crashes then bump your core v up a bit, like maybe +25mv to start and test again, if it fails bump it another 25 to +50mv etc... I needed +50mv to get to 4.6GHZ stable (i5-7600k ). after you get that stable and if temps are still good ( 60~70 range during testing ) you can try for a higher OC, but you maybe start hitting a thermal wall with a 120 AIO cooler, thats why i stopped at 4.6, i could get to 4.9 but the temps were tickling the max limit with a corsair h100i.

I turned down my RAM to just out of OC as I am having some sort of Bad_Pool_Caller BSOD, it's just for testing until I can find out the issue. It truly only BSOD's when I'm surfing the web with MS Edge, and I THINK it has to do with Malwarebytes 3.0 to be honest, BUT...

While the RAM is down to 2133 I upped the multi to 46 and left everything else where it is, I then ran LinX64 bit at full memory for 3 mins to test my cpu cooler, at 100% CPU and full RAM the CPU temp never broke 67c. I know it should run a full three times but I'm still working out the windows 10 kinks at the moment.

I reset the TCP/IP  to see if that cures the BSOD's and so far so good, I will up the memory as soon as I'm sure that worked and test some more.

try turning off fast boot in windows under the power settings, it caused all sorts of headaches for me.

Well it's been a few days and no BSOD's so far, it seems to be fixed. It must have been the combo of Malwarebytes and a corrupt TCP/IP stack. However I have some MS Tech Guru's on standby to help analyze any more BSOD's dmp's JIC it happens again.

Say Quad, I just read about the 7700 and 6700's having an issue with Hyper threading? Is this just some people running certain programs or should everyone turn off HT? I don't seem to be having any issues even with a 4.6 overclock as far as I can tell.

it seems to effect a small number of users that run certain things, it's one of those stars align type deals. i think for most users it wont effect you and there is a fix coming. but with your recent problems with crashes i would say it couldnt hurt to disable HT until the fix is done.

Roger that, BTW, I am able to hit and be stable at 4.6 and 4.7 with the ram at 3200. I don't see much of a jump in benchmarks though, but I am only benching with TimeSpy/Firestrike, I haven't doen any real torture tests yet. The CPU does get a bit warm too, Max CPU holds in the 70's every now and then touching 80-81c.

I think I better wait until I can get a better cooler, although I wonder how it will run with HT off??

    thanks again quad!

Hey guys...Can get some advice....I'm not sure if I have the mentioned HT i7 7700 issue....But my rig shuts down occasionally or just looses the display in 5-10 minutes of gaming. All the components are from my EVGA z97 that never faulted.( Also have a LSI mega raid 9741 running two raid drives).I had just put Windows 10 upgrade few weeks prior to upgrading to EVGA z270, dominator 3200 16 GB and i7-7700....But now I get this random shutdown or video stops but sounds is still going....Driving me crazy. I have been building many systems since the 286 days, checked all the basics and looking for ideas. In event viewer only show a USB error ( clfdx or something) and windows hello error. I just turn off power settings and reinabled the cam in the BIOS.....Sorry for the spelling errors
System. Z270 classified,i7-7700, Corsair dominator 3200 2x8. Seasonic 860 platinum power,m2 ssd samsung 960 pro 500gb..LSI mega raid in 2nd pcie x16 slot...Multiple SSD and hard drives.evga 280 closed loop cooler, usb multiplier, phanteks enthos lux case.... Corsair rgb keyboard and mice. Thank you for any help
