So,
A guy did it (Upgrade Addiction, an awesome channel BTW), with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut.
Despite this is most probably going to void your warranty (liquid metal, not thermal paste replacement), It's impressive how it can come cooler in full load.

    You should not use conductonaut in combination with aluminium, it's a big hint in the manual.
    I dont know what the cooler is made of but i wouldn't recommend it.

    The K|ngp|n card, aka top of the 1080ti line, is Copper Plated Aluminum, so I would suspect this is aluminum. When people pull their cooler and realize the liquid metal has been eating the aluminum and has completely voided their $800 gpu warranty, they will regret the few degree difference this made.

    Hey Scarlet-Tech are you sure the plate that contacts the GPU die isn't nickel plated copper?
     
    I thought everything that uses heatpipes usually does that or leaves the copper plate bare (Ie. not nickel plated).  The reason for this is it's a real PITA to solder copper<->aluminum (heatpipes are copper).
     
    That said the liquid metal TIM is a horrible idea for a GPU.

    This is about as smart as putting your water cooled rig outside in the middle of a Canadian winter in hopes to overclock it some more..

    Not to mention if the liquid metal comes in contact with anything other than the GPU die your card will short out...

    I was about to do the same, but as extra use non conductive tape to make sure my card won't die. Though i still don't know if the heatsink is made out of alu or a mix.

    I thought the same thing, but evidently EVGA is using aluminum with copper plating.. not sure that was a good idea personally, but then again, that air cooler isn't all that useful on a K|ngp|n card anyway.

    I would only do this with a CPU, with a GPU the tempurature difference is so small that it can be attributed to ambient temp changes. It just isn't worth the time or the risk.

    It wouldn't make sense to use a Gallium-based TIM if the coldplate is made out of Aluminum, but I'm guessing it's the standard nickel-plated copper that everyone else is using?

    Man I really wish I could get a more substantial response than that, because other people are reporting decent results. I have leftover Conductonaut and CLU so if it's a non-zero gain then it seems worth it, so long as it doesn't void Warranty. Do any EVGA officials browse this forum?

    If the FTW3 has a nickle plated copper coldplate, why is everyone talking about aluminum? Am I missing something here?
     
    Not trying to be a smart ass, generally interested. I understand the inherent risk of using liquid metal but materials shouldn't be an issue in this case. 

    My computer finds cures for diseases and searches for aliens when I'm not gaming...what does yours do?

    Pretty interesting. Swapping the stock TIM with Kryonaut has worked well enough for my needs, and I don't have the financial fortitude to risk it, personally.

    EVGA will probably never give a direct statement "allowing" members to put a conductive material on the gpu. Even if you just want to know what materials the cooler is made of. They do no want to imply permission to risk your hardware.

    What is so hard to understand? The coldplate is nickel-plated copper, the heatpipes are copper with nickel-plating on them, the fins are aluminum.
     

     

     
    As long as the liquid metal stays inside the green box you're fine. If the liquid metal goes outside the green box and starts touching the components in red your card is done.

    I would think liquid metal would prevent putting the card back to stock.  Or any electrical short caused by the liquid metal would void the warranty

    The warranty will be void if the liquid metal shorts the card out. Returning the card back to factory isn't a problem. All you have to do is remove the liquid metal and put any non-conductive thermal paste back onto the core before sending it in for rma.

    While I won't argue the that 10 degree drop reported in the second video seems to be on the extreme side, I think these two videos do a better job illustrating how terrible the FE style coolers are compared to 3rd party options. Even with the abysmal cooler it drop a few degrees and lowered the fan speed.

    No explanation from EVGA is likely. It's simple, don't use liquid metal on a GPU. That was a very bad idea. You may be lucky, but you may have damaged your card, or slow on going damage, and voided the warranty too.
    Good luck with this. Just don't it again!

    That actually works....just gotta manage coolant temps really well, and make sure your reservoirs / loop is vented for liquid expansion.

    I'd never use a liquid metal TIM on a GPU.  I push my hardware just about as hard as anyone, and have never even considered it.

    What can actually damage the GPU chip when using that liquid metal?
    Is there a way to find the components somewhere?
