It doesn't help that I have pretty much everything that interests me already. But I concur that the sales over the last 3-4 years have been lackluster.
Still, there are some decent deals that pop up so I always look.

I've been looking forward to this for a while now. That said, I do agree the sales haven't been as good since the flash sales went away. Those added a sense of exitement to it that made it more fun. I'll probably still drop a decent amount of money this time around. Dunno, if I'll hunt around for unkown gems, though. I might just stick to the games I have on my wishlist, if they happen to be on sale. Probably check it out later in the day though, as I'm sure the servers will be slammed due to the sheer amount of people trying to browse at the same time.

It's gonna be bad because game developers are not releasing good games......
The biggest games of the past year aren't on Steam to begin with, so the picking will be slim. Also the direction of publishers focusing on paid DLC platforms in which the DLC is rarely lowered in price is apparent. Bethesda with Fallout 4 is a great example of this.

The sale is MEH at best. Runs to July 5...maybe one or two deals along the way. Right now, I purchased PCMark10 Advanced from Futuremark...

If you already own some games and are looking for bigger discounts, do a Steam search for "bundle" or "pack".
Examples:
Sniper Elite 4 is 50% off, $30. Buying the Sniper Elite Pack is an additional 11% off. I already own Sniper Elite 2 and 3. So the only things in the bundle for me are Sniper Elite 1 and Sniper Elite 4. Sniper Elite 1 is only $3. With the 11% off for the bundle, Sniper Elite 4 and Sniper Elite 1 together are $28.82. Cheaper than Sniper Elite 4 by itself.
Introversion Pack; Darwinia, Uplink, DEFCON, Multiwinia, and Prison Architect. I already own 3/5 of those games. The two I don't have are Darwinia and Uplink. They are $1.50 each, $3 if I buy them separately. BUT, the bundle is 50% off. So I could buy both for $1.50.
FarCry Bundle was the same way. I only didn't have FarCry Primal. It's 50% off, but the "bundle" adds an additional 10-15% off (I forgot which). So I got the game for a bit cheaper.

I think this might end up being the first big Steam sale (summer/winter), since joining, that I don't end up buying anything. When I buy something on sale from Steam, I usually try to keep it around the $10 mark. That way i can kind of justify buying so many games I probably won't actually get around to playing for a long time. There is only like one game on my wishlist at or below that threshold. I might end up buying it, I dunno. I already have an ever growing backlog of games as it is.

Well Steam is a store and I usually buy, even Steam games, from other stores. I would say Steam has gotten worse. They really just resemble a DRM anymore. They really add little value IMO. However, aren't all these systems (like Origin, Uplay, Battle.net) just DRM anyway? However, Steam used to have value on the fact that games could be had for a great deal, that is starting to go away.

Some people like to argue that those store fronts aren't DRM, but IMO they are. Which is part of the reason I find myself buying games from GOG a lot more often.

Yeah. The major studios raise prices so it looks like a good deal. Others don't even bother anymore that battlegrounds game didn't see any discount, and the crazy overpriced $20 Utopia DLC for Stellaris was a paltry 10%.
 Have water, will cool.
