Im debating a new build, between Z270 and X99.  Will I get full x16 PCIE lanes to my GTX 1080Ti on Z270 if i use a m.2 SSD?  I know the Cpu has 16 PCIE lanes, but does the x4 that the m.2 uses come from the cpu or does the z270 chipset provide these.  I dont want to limit my 1080Ti in any way at all.  Not here to discuss the relevance of whether x16 or x8 matters, I just want to know if i will get full x16 while running an M.2 SSD, or do I need to look into x99 with more PCIE lanes available.

All 16 lanes are for the two pcie slots, if you use one gpu in pe2 then you get x16, if you sli with pe2 and pe4 then it will be x8 each. Now if you use a AIB in pe4 for something else then pe2 will drop to x8 also. All the sata and m.2 lanes come from the z270 chip.

Thanks for the replys. Does this hold the same for pretty much all Z270 boards, brands?

PCI-E distribution will vary from model to model from different brands. You will want to open up the manual for the particular model you are interested in as this information is usually located there.

Keep in mind that PCI-E gen3 speeds at x8 are almost identical in performance to x16 in most applications. It usually only impacts about 1 FPS if anything at all. Check out this breakdown from Gamers Nexus, they have excellent testing methods:

yes, since the z270 is the "enthusiast" grade chip in the the segment they will all have 24 lanes from the z270 chip ( unless they use some sort of plx chip ) but may be divided up differently. from the cpu you will have those dedicated to graphics to one or two slots. you may find some weird design with a different layout but most of them will be the same.
