The thermal indicators and logo bar might be closing the loop to the lights, maybe.  I hooked mine up and all lights work fine on Precision.

HMM!! maybe, i am not sure i have tried to uninstall software drivers etc... but still nothing not sure hopefully someone can find out kinda doesn't make sense that they would support the factory back plate but led will not work.

Not trying to insult yah.  You know where to look on Precision, right?  The little blue cog on the bottom right corner, is where you find options for the card.  I couldn't figure it at first.

How did you go about removing thermal and 1080ti led logo from cooler?

Ahh, are you gonna take the card apart again?  You do have to disassemble the waterblock, to insert the connectors for the logo bar.  If so, then let me attempt to try and retrace my steps.  There are tiny silver allen bolts holding the cover (fan shroud) in place.  I think 6 bolts, 4 that is going in sideways and 2 going in up or down.  Then the logo bar has to be cracked open to reveal 4 screws holding the bar in place.  I used my finger nail to crack it open.  Also some other LEDs that are screwed down.  There will be 4 other accent LEDs connected to the bar, I could not find room to stuff them in the card, so I cut them and cover up the exposed wires.  I also laid down some thermal tape on both 8 pin power connectors, because the wires are gonna be touching them.  Just in case the power pins get hot enough to melt plastic.
Good luck!  Let me know how it turns out.

Really don't want to take cards apart sime they are already in my loop just can't figure out why the backplate led's are not working like you mentioned before i wonder if they are part of a chain that needs all connectors linked for all led's to function. Thank you bye the way

I hear yah there.  I know it would be minor to take apart the block, but to drain your loop and take apart the block, reassemble and fill the loop all over again.  That maybe too much...  Maybe, think about changing something in the loop, so that it seems more productive to install the bar.

Right!! Hmm if I can't figure it out looks like I'll just go with the ek nickel backplate, but Jacob said new PXOC will be out tomorrow with new skin so maybe it will fix the issue

Hi guys.
I plan to buy the 1080 Ti FTW3 and put a water block on it. I just wonder if it's better to buy a Hybrid version and then replace the block.
Are there any differences in BIOS of these versions?
Is it possible to use the BIOS for Hybrid in FTW3?

I guess it checks, if the LED header of the fan shroud is (dis)connected. I also got no access to LED settings, if I disconnect the LED header of the shroud.

Go with the Hydrocopper from the start.  It will save you money and time.

What a shame, an RGB badge on the Hydro Copper would have been really nice...

Very esthetic job Kraxe
i will try to make like Kraxe and connect the original 1080TI FTW3 front led text on the backplate;).
Have you just put it on tne backplate or set some thermal pad or other stuff to avoid hot surface on " EVGA 1080TI FTW 3" led text ?

I agree, Graphite8five.

Yeah the RGB badge on the FTW3 is sexy, I'm just bummed about the fan hum, if fan noise was consistent throughout the rpm range I would be super happy.

On air I max 60-62C and average 50-55C which is really pretty good for most of my games at 80-90 fps 3440x1440. I'll admit I'm not maxing my games out fully and some settings might bring the temperature up a bit but framerate's tend to suffer also. It appears that I cannot get temps better than this on air. I'm not sure how this compares to the Hybrid and custom loop temps.

It's just free floating, resting on the back plate.  I did set some pads on the exposed part of both 8 pins, because wires are touching the bare pins.
I don't think the back plate gets hot enough.

Re: Water blocks for the ftw3 2018/03/02 04:46:35 (permalink)
I'm in the process of installing my EK waterblock. Judging from the things I'm reading on different threads in this forum, the backplate LED issue when a waterblock is installed is not yet fixed (again, shame on you EVGA for not fixing multiple issues with this freakin' expensive card!). I forgot to set the color to my liking before taking the card apart so I'm assuming that red will be the color of the backplate LED when I fire it up. It doesn't matter much because my GPU will be mounted vertically anyway but I still want to know are you able to turn off the LED completely with Precision OCX? Or should I just leave the cable disconnected? Or just do what the other person here did and connect the G and GND pins to the header only? Green is what I want, btw.

EDIT: I don't think Bombenfreak's idea will work in my case because the card has the LED set to Red in the first place. So I'm assuming the PCB header will not give 3V to either G or B pins.

Actually the backplate led will not work at all with the ek block installed.

No lights!

I have some rgb lights in the case and they make the led panels on the card glow hehe. :/

Wait, I thought it will work but the lights can't be changed from what they are BEFORE installing the waterblock? There was a guy that claimed this.

And how did Bombeenfreak's technique work?

Right but why do other people observe otherwise?

EDIT: Just finished mounting my EK waterblock to my EVGA GTX 1080Ti FTW3 and tested it right away (without coolant) on an old computer. Here's proof for you :)

So Bombenfreak's suggestion would work. The LED defaults to white when the main RGB LED from the stock fan assembly is disconnected. I'm not sure how the other guy claimed that you just need to set the color of your choosing before installing the waterblock and that will be the color that will show when you have the waterblock installed.
