I feel that my x58 classified 3x sli has sata problems which led me to upgrading to a kaby lake build. Is it possible to bypass the onboard sata and install a operating system through a pci e sata card?

on which board? if the x58 then maybe, there was a post in the x58 forum about using a m.2 drive with a pcie add in board and i remember some people way back using revo drives. for standard sata AIB it should work.

I used a SATA card in my EVGA FTW3 with a SSD and it booted fine. Should work fine in your board too.
Not tried the m.2 drive, think it has to me a Samsung 950pro to work.

i tried a LSI 9240-8i pcie2 x8 mega raid card with the sata cables ( will do 8 sata 3 drives total ) and it would not work because its ufei only, which stinks because it was non refundable. oh well live and learn.
