I have a PC that was primary used as an htpc. I am repurposing it to a gaming PC as I just purchased an Evga 1080ti icx. This will be used for gaming at 4k. Is it worth overclock this cpu to 5ghz for gaming?

System specs:
Asus z270g Strix
16gb Corsair 3200mhz
960evo 500gb nvme
Corsair h115i gtx
Thermaltake core v21 matx
65" Samsung ks8000 4k
Evga G2G 750 watt

True, and I have had it at 5ghz before no issues but it's currently stock since it was only being used to watch video and sjrft the web. Now that it will see a gaming load, I haven't found any benchmarks, does the 7700k at 5gz provide any performance improvement at 4k on a 1080ti

In terms of performance, that will be subjective. I cant imagine a game that wouldnt benefit from overclocking.

Higher resolutions require more GPU power so the bottleneck between CPU and GPU loosens when gaming at 4k.

Depending on what you play. Some will benefit and some not so much, also its really going to depend on the chip, some 7700k's will oc better than others and with using a AIO cooler it might have a hard time keeping the temps in check, but if you can get it there with good temps and stable then go for it.

Got that 1080ti into that pc and the 7700K is humming along at 5ghz.  Did a quick Firestrike Ultra test and got 7464.  Not bad, I have always been an SLI guy so this is one of my first single GPU rigs I have had in quite a while.  My main rig in SLI still destroyed that.  Will be nice for some sofa gaming though.  Will still fall back on my main battle station for serious stuff :)  lol.

heat is always an issue with the 7700k when hitting 5ghz. I settled for 4.8 for this reason. even though I delidded mine with CL liquid metal.  I did this after encoding a movie using hand brake which is cpu intensive and watching my temps with real temp. I'm not happy with anything over 80c. but that's just me

Yes. Exactly. Although overclocking reduce your cpu life and may void your warranty.

8 years +out of a i7 930 over clocked and it still runs strong, you just cant get crazy with the voltage.

I would say keep it to 4.8, it really isn't worth it past that.

Exactly. If he goes crazy, his cousin won't last long.

If it can handle it sure, just test the temps
