HardOCP has published this article testing the following cpus for gaming:
  • i7 7700K @ 5GHz
  • Ryzen 7 1700X @ 4GHz
  • i7 2600K @ 4.5GHz

Long story short:
  • If you are only going to use the pc for gaming, your best choice is the i7 7700K because IPC and GHz is what has the greatest effect in gaming.
  • If you are going to use the pc for gaming and other productivity tasks that benefit from multi-threading (like encoding, rendering, streaming), then pick the Ryzen 7 1700X. You will still be able to game very well and you won't notice the difference with the 7700K, specially at 2K@60Hz and 4K gaming. You might notice it a bit more if playing at 2K @144Hz and g-sync, but will still be a good experience.
  • The 6 year old i7 2600K @ 4.5 GHz still does very well if you only use it for gaming. In fact, in many cases you can't tell the difference with the new Ryzen 7 1700X and it is not far behind of the 7700K. Seriously, what have Intel and AMD been doing all these years in the gaming front?

4k results are dead even. Looks like I'll be keeping my 5960x.

Yes, if you play at high resolutions that make the game performance gpu bound the difference between processors is greatly reduced. I bet your pc will be perfectly fine for at least 3 more years and even then, if you change it it will be because you are an enthusiast and not because you have any pressure to change.
