I would advocate to ignore HDDs for system drives until i dropped dead. The files on it will be required for things you use on other drives, and the random write/read and seek times are abysmal. It will bottleneck your modern real-time experience you paid so much to expect. SSDs can be partitioned without risk, and at 1TB the life expectancy is nothing to worry about. I use my slower, smaller one for OS, Steam, and minor-sized games.
You could be a boss and get 64GB of ram to run games on a RAMDisk, loaded from images saved to an SSD. Its true real-time at that point, took me less than half a second to go from menu to playing in most games.
I hear good things about the 1070. Do check nvidia's release cycle to see when the next card gen is coming out, as well as market indicators about the company moving forward. Can find some top-tier deals if timed about when people see them rolling forward and users moving with them. If the outlook is iffy, old stuff stays expensive longer. Or ---- it and just be done.
