Ive been looking around the net for an answer to this and unfort. most things are dated before 2010.
Question is with this motherboard how many ssd, hard drives can you attach. I have pretty much all slots empty on one kind. Well, have 1 dvd drive in it.
So right now 1 ssd, 3 hard drives and one external dock ..

its really going to depend on the board and how many ports you have and if you are using a m.2 slot. if no m.2 then you can attach as many as the number sata ports you have, if you add a pcie sata controller card then you can attach more depending on the number of ports it has. if you use the m.2 slots they will generally use some sata ports and/or pcie lanes.

I have 1 M.2 NVME PCIe in the long slot and 2 Samsung SATA SSDs a 850 and a 950. My board is EVGA Z170 Classy K

Short answer: If you use the shorter 2280 slot, you will be able to do 11 drives without extensions. 10 can hotswap. Extra thoughts: Extensions could put you into dozens of drives, but at that point. I would get a NAS, as they can have some extra features like remote access or streaming your media to a website Windows tends to have periodic hangs with more HDDs installed, as it wakes them for use, runs SMART tests, does other diagnostics, or has to enumerate statistics for the file browser (the latter compounded by partitions).

i found that out the hard way, had to completely reinstall to fix it. its that whole storage spaces thing, which is annoying.

actually the long one is NVMe or Sata, the shorter one is NVMe only 3x M.2 -1x Key M 110mm speeds up to 32Gbps (PCIE 3.0 x4 or SATA 3.0), shared with SATA Ports 4/5 -1x Key M 80mm speeds up to 32Gbps (PCIE 3.0 x4), shared with PE4 - Key M M.2s do support RAID 0 and 1 with each other. NOT supported between a M.2 and SATA or SATA-Express.

Windows will install parts of the OS on different drives and you remove one drive windows will fail to boot. I had this problem and the only way to fix it is to either put the removed drive back or reinstall windows.

I have fresh installed Win10 several times with two other drives connected. I have also removed each (at different times) of those extra drives while testing different things. At no time did I have any issue with Win10 not booting or working properly. The only thing I can think of is when you allow Windows to use or create Storage Spaces or you manually set it up yourself. I don't recall if you're asked about this during a custom OS install, but I'm thinking you are. If so, say no. If you use that service, Windows will put things on other drives creating a pool of storage space. After a fresh OS install, I go to settings > system > storage and make sure this is off/disabled. I also go to admin tools > services and disable both the storage service and the storage tiers managmenet settings just for good measure. Some info on the subject of storage spaces > http://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-storage-spaces-windows-10 If you need total peace of mind on the matter, follow the above advice & remove extra drives during install.

I wonder if that is why my last sysprep wouldn't get past getting ready on a fresh image, but they never did before. Don't think it comes on by default or with any applied group policies, but i'll check. Thanks for the note.

nope, selected just the one drive during setup. i have installed windows before and it did not do it but it seems windows does what it wants sometimes.
