I am in the process of completing my build and just realized I cannot access my USB 3.0 headers.  Because they are at a 90 degree angle instead of vertical, there is not enough clearance to plug in a USB 3.0 cable due to the lip of metal that forms the motherboard tray being in the way.

It seems I need some sort of adapter to bend the angle of the connector up.  Is this what I would use:

https://www.moddiy.com/products/USB-3.0-20%252dPin-Internal-Header-Adapter-Cable-%28Low-Profile-Connector%29.html

If so, is that my only option?  $15 x 2 seems steep just to grant access to my USB 3.0 headers, but I'm not finding any other options.  I did find some old search results indicating EVGA used to carry these, but the link was dead.

On a related note, why make these headers face the bottom of the case in the first place?  Why not orient them upward?

yes you could use those, i would get the flat ribbon or sleeved version personally.
i like that face down, makes for a cleaner case wire routing. as for why, since these EATX size boards most people would use a larger mid tower or full tower case that would have plenty of room for the cable to face straight down

This is a major flaw with the Z270 line up. Any case that has a power supply basement could make any or all of the down firing ports inaccessible. Myself I cannot use the right most USB 3.0 header or the CHA_FAN header.

Not to mention the huge clearance problems caused by the right angle ATX connector.

The adapter you linked to might be your only option, provided you will not over bend it in order to get it plugged in.

I'm looking at the pictures of the ribbon cable (see pics 2 and 3):

    https://www.moddiy.com/products/USB-3.0-20%252dPin-Internal-Header-Ribbon-Cable-%28Low-Profile-Connector%29.html

And they look identical to the non-ribbon version:

    Are those pictures correct?

Yeah I noticed that.  How is someone supposed to access the ATX power connector at the bottom?  It's almost touching my PSU, and I'm using a pretty standard configuration (Define R5, Corsair PSU).  I don't anticipate ever needing SLI so I guess I can ignore that, but it seems you would need to buy a full size as opposed to mid-sized case to access that port.  The only way I could access the two fan headers at the bottom would be to install the cables before installing the motherboard, and even then it might not work.  Luckily I don't need them either.  It looks like I can get to the USB 3.0 headers with low profile cables, but I see how a PSU shroud could block those.
