Hi, yesterday I was playing Battlefield 4 when all of the sudden my computer shut down and black smoke arose from the case. I immediately turned off the computer to prevent damage then I saw a flame emerge and the card looked like a birthday cake with a disgusting odor. Fortunately, I was able to blow through the vent next to the graphics card, extinguishing the fire and preventing the disaster from spreading. I've had the card for two years and I'm told my warranty has expired. A quick Google search says other users have had similar issues I need some help!

Sorry to hear you're having problems with your gpu. You can check the warranty status of your gpu here. What is the Guest RMA process and why does it help?- No registration is required to submit a request.
- Warranty submission is done through a simple online form without contacting tech support through the phone.
- You know if you're under warranty right away, if you're under warranty you can submit an RMA.
- You can work with EVGA's legendary tech support for troubleshooting if you wish, or you can skip and send your product in.

I'm aware that the card is under the warranty suffix "BR" which is for one year warranty but this shouldn't catch on fire, especially after two years of usage. This could've easily burned my house down had I not seen it. The "sorry it's out of warranty" line falls short on such an extreme failure on a product from a respected company.

I'm coming up to two years on a 970 FTW, interested to hear how you got on. Was there any cause identified? What's the spec of your PC? Ultimately I think you're right, failure is one thing but catching fire is very serious.

About possible hotspots. From the first day, I created a fancurve and never used the semipassiv option of the acx from my Ti. That should - from my point of view - create some safety.

exact reason i mod the fan curves in mine, just did my 970 so the fans always run at minimum 30%, left the second bios as is but the main one gots changed.

Just sold my last 970 FTW I had. From day 1 I bought the backplate to help regulate temps and used an aggressive fan curve putting the fans @ 100% at 60'C. Didn't have issues with heat at all doing that with both of them. Mine had the 3yr warranty. -KR

I'm sure that EVGA Customer Service would like to get their hands on this card to (hopefully) determine an exact cause of this potentially disastrous situation, so that preventive measures can be taken in future models to ensure that this (hopefully) doesn't happen again, and to recall any models affected if an exact cause can be determined that would constitute liability on the part of the corporation. After all, this is reality, no respected corporation wants their name associated with deaths caused by fires, even if they have to replace cards (or other products) that in the short term will cost a wad of cash, still would be far less than a single tragedy that involves loss(es) of life and/or property in a civil lawsuit. This can be potentially damaging to any brand, in recent years Toyota caused several deaths (one of the worst by a trained police officer), and the brand still hasn't fully recovered. Makes me want to sell or retire my MSI GeForce GTX 960 (2DG5), which amazingly survived a beer spill that I wasn't aware of, until the screen started looking weird in less than a minute, and I shut down to prevent damage. I was lucky. Had laid a beer on my mouse pad, and there was a cord close by, that my cat ran through, and my wife thought she had cleaned all up, not thinking to tell me. Fortunately, not a drop hit the MB, the GPU caught most all, save for a few drops in the bottom of the case. I disassembled the card & cleaned up well, allowing a fan for force dry it for 2 hours at a time in different positions, once sure all was gone, fired back up (with my finger on the PSU's power switch), there was a slight smell of beer from the heatsink fins, otherwise all was fine, have had no trouble since, the cleaning actually caused temps to drop. On the other hand, the incident also exposed one thing, it's construction, mostly cheap plastic, while my EVGA brand GPU's are smaller in outer size, although heavier & why I've never purchased another non-EVGA GPU (nor PSU). Like a couple of other members stated, I'd like to see the actual picture of the card, and would also like to know if the PCIe slot was still usable afterwards. I'd had never created a Topic of this magnitude w/out some proof of the damage to let members see for ourselves of the damage. Cat
We get the hardware that we pay for, no if's, and's or but's, buy cheap, expect trouble, frequent replacements & lots of configuration/downtime. Purchase quality & enjoy the investment for years.

Really something I think EVGA would want to hear about even if it is out of warranty since they are a company that cares about the customers. I don't know what they might be able to do but I am sure they would like to make sure it doesn't happen in the future.

Hello Sirezpz. I removed your post as, while the serial number was cut off, the bar code was still attached. I was able to scan that bar code to get your full serial number. With the full serial we were able to run the warranty information in our system. I will reach out to you directly with a solution to get that card replaced.

There was a post removed after the user posted some information that needed to be removed. RayH is helping him out, but the posts look a little out of place. Should have been a new thread, but mistakes occur and the post was put into a dormant thread. Looks like everything is fixed now. :-)
