I had this board up and running many years ago.  I had a power supply short out and totally lost the board.  Ordered a new one but before it came in I purchased locally a new X58 SLI FTW3 and thus I have not touched the older original X58 SLI for years.  Still installed the original Core i7 920/Dual Video Cards which was in during the power supply shorting totally out.  I put new memory in it and thought I would fire this system back up just today after all these years.  I get power/lights/fans but no beeps or codes.  I've removed the battery and totally cleared the BIOS but still same thing.  I would say that the processor is dead the day it shorted out but would like to hear it from someone else other then just me since I'm a bit out of date on being an expert on this.  I can buy a new one but do respect your comments before I just go grab a new one.. maybe a i7 960 Extreme or something better.  So, keep in mind that power supply shorted for what ever reason and let the smoke out of it kind of short!  Would you think the motherboard would have not only been the only thing to fry?

So the debug led is completely blank? It doesn't show 00, FF or 88?

Sajin, thanks for the help here.  Just took a look and actually forgot about the display inside.  I just fired her up and seen 1F, C1, 25, F3, 68.... after 30 seconds it settles on F3 then 68.  It continues to run and never shuts off.  Just no beeps or screen at all.

#1 Take all ram out of the system.
#2 Place one stick into dimm slot #1. First gray dimm slot closest to cpu socket.
    #3 Test the system.
#4 Let me know what codes you get.

Ok.  FYI. I have two new Kingston DDR3-1600 CL9 at 4gb each.  Pulled and left one in the grey slot closest to CPU.  In order of the codes as I recorded it.  F3, F6, 62, 68, C1, 25 in about 15 seconds.  Then settles after about 30 seconds on F3, 68 toggling between the F3 and 68 but mostly on the 68.  Does not power off.

#1 Remove all ram from system.
#2 Try a different stick of ram in dimm slot #2. Second gray dimm slot closest to cpu.
#3 If you get the same 68 code try moving the same stick to farthest gray dimm slot.

Done.  Same results with the other DIMM.  From 2nd and 3rd slots.  FYI.  I let it run longer this time in both slots then I initially did.  I said it does not power down.  It does and then restarts itself.  I didn't give it enough time initially.  However, same codes..

F3, F6 for just a split second and it shut off and repeats itself over and over.

Based on what you have said I would recommend testing another cpu.

Sajin, many thanks to you.  I'll most likely look for a new CPU... hope I can find a good price on Amazon and get one on the way.  I appreciate your help.

No problem. Please report back when you get the other cpu installed.

Here's some secret sauce you can try that works for me (I use it on our FTW3 bench system):

When it starts looping F3, F6, 68: Hit the soft reset button once.

Usually at this point it will go back through those codes and then C1, C3, 25 and then hang. Here I hit the soft reset one more time. Typically it will hit 25 again and then roll over to 2d and continue to POST.

I don't see this every time, mostly I only use this board if I need to test new stuff to see if it works or trying to install excessive amounts of RAM, etc. In worst case, I clear CMOS, unplug the board for 30 seconds or so and start over. Will usually do the trick

If you have the EVGA FTW3 there are hexcore xeons x5660 that will run in that board.
I have 2 FTW3 and run x5660 CPUs, they overclock to 4ghz fairly easy , BCLK unlocked
They are selling on ebay for 32$. That is a lot of CPU for 32$
There are w3680 hexcores that are multiplier and BCLK unlocked like the 980x they are selling for 80$
Buy from a parts recycler, these CPUs are server pulls.

If you want cheaper there are x5620 quad cores for around 10$ or less, server pulls

Bill1024, thanks much for that info.  I was looking and looking and just hated to take a gamble and hope one of those would work.  I used to be into this stuff more.  Disabled Vet now with some brain issues and at times I just get overwhelmed.  Felt funny not remembering the CODE was on the board for me to look at.  However, it was nice to post up here for my first time.  Great info.  The possible/probable bad CPU is in my X58 3X SLI and I'm on my daily computer with X58 3X SLI FTW with the same processor as the one that is dead.  So, with your info... I'll upgrade this box and move this i720 over to the current dead system.  Winner winner chicken dinner!  The i720 on the X58 3X SLI ran solid for me for over a year "before the power supply shorted out" at a overclock of 4.2ghz on air.  That was a sweet setup and I would say a matched set of DIMM's had to have contributed greatly to the speed.  I'll certainly find one of these Xeon's and go that route.  Thanks Bill and Sajin!

You're welcome. If you need some help overclocking it, post up.
The xeons are 32nm CPUs so they run a little bit cooler as well.
Keep the CPU and VVT volts at or below 1.35  VVT 1.35 on the FTW3 is +150mv
    Good luck.

I am not 100% sure what other board you have, but the xeons do not run natively on all EVGA boards.
    FTW3, Classified3 and SLI3, some other boards with a REV 1.2
maybe you can post the exact model number on the sticker on the board, not the ser#
3x SLI ftw is not ringing a bell for me, there was a, SLI3, and a, 3 way SLI
If by chance it does not work on the board, you can just put the xeon in the FTW3 and the 920 back where it was.
    Keep us posted.
