Hey people,

I've been using my EVGA GTX 1070 Black Edition with my Maximus VI Hero for about 3 months now. No issues. A few days ago my PC refused to POST. It powers on for a few seconds, then goes off then back on in a constant loop. No beeps and the debug LCD shows no errors. The one unusual thing is the video card's fans spin at full speed (4000RPM). That never happens when I power on my PC before nor while gaming or stress test.

Changed PCI-E power cable. Same prob. I cleared CMOS and same prob. Removed GPU and PC works fine with onboard (CPU) graphics. In the BIOS/UEFI I changed primary display adapter from Auto to PCIE and that allowed it to POST and boot up with the GPU. PC works perfectly fine. I run Furmark and play games maxed for hours with no issues at all.

I went to bed, tried it in the morning and the same thing happened again with the endless reboots and GPU fan on max. I press the reset button on the motherboard itself (which from my knowledge is just to do a restart) and it boots up. I restart, it boots up again BUT the GPU fan goes to max speed for like 2 seconds then slows down.

The GPU works flawlessly once the PC boots up so I don't see why that should be faulty. At one point the BIOS showed my 1st PCI-E x16 slot with the graphics card at x0 which was odd (if empty it shows "not present")

It seems that when I leave my PC off for a few hours, I encounter this problem now. I have no extra hardware to swap out and try. I don't know what to suspect nor how to fix this and I need your help

It may or may not be the fix for you, but I was having POST problems as well where my RAID card would stop loading during boot up and my computer would just loop restart. It turned out that my CR2032 coin battery for the CMOS needed replacing, and after I swapped it out my strange POST problems went away.

My computer would sometimes boot successfully and the RAID card worked fine within Windows, which is why I think that it might be your CMOS battery.

My BIOS has no problem saving any settings. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to replace the battery but I wasn't suspecting that to be the problem. I have the same issue with everything at default as well.

I am not using the latest BIOS. I have been using the PC for over 2.5 years almost constantly with the current BIOS. I live in Jamaica and if the BIOS flash fails, it is going to be a pain to RMA the board. I am looking into purchasing a BIOS chip but it won't get to me until another 30 days from now. Everything was perfect for 3 months until this started and nothing has changed.

Your initial post describes the classic symptoms of a dead or dying CMOS battery. That would be my first suggestion.

I will try and replace the battery soon. Again, I just did not suspect that to cause an issue since the time and a variety of settings I have made in the BIOS have all never changed.

I have been using BIOS ver 1301 since day one. I don't want to update my BIOS until I get the BIOS chip. I can't afford to brick my board and having to ship it to the USA from Jamaica then wait for it to be repaired out of warranty then sent back.

What I want to know is, why would the GPU fans spin at full blast when it has never done that before? No matter the load on the PC it works perfectly fine after it boots up. I only have the POST issue now after the PC has been off for a few hours.

Fans spinning up to 100% at boot is normal for acx cards. https://forums.evga.com/GTX980-FTW-fans-spin-up-to-max-rpm-during-boot-m2311834.aspx

Bios version 1402 is the last bios that improves system stability.

Well for the 3 months I have had this GPU, that has NEVER happened until this issue started. I mean the fans spin like crazy, to the point where when I max the fan speed from in Windows using EVGA Precision, it goes to 4000RPM then immediately drops to 3500RPM.

I will see what I can do about the BIOS version and CMOS Battery. I was just hoping there was something else I could try first. Thanks for all the replies.

The Maximus VI Hero features the coolness of USB BIOS Flashback, so there's no worries about recovering from a failed flash..The USB BIOS Flashback button and port are on the rear panel..That's all explained on page 2-11 of your Mobo Manual and is the best way to update the BIOS..Version 1603 is the latest and can be found here.

Please do download, rename the BIOS.CAP, and update the BIOS using USB BIOS Flashback and roll from there..You should also say exactly which XFX 850W PSU you have..You should also be able to run the video card in the second PCIe x16 slot, so you can try that too if you haven't already.
