Not sure where coil whine is coming from?

Hi all,

This is killing me right now as I have drained my loop probably 8 times in the past 2 days. I have an issue right now. I bought a 1080 GTX from a person (trusted person) who told me they had no coil whine and when I plugged it into my system I can clearly hear coil whine during GPU load. I have read that PSU's can make GPUs coil whine. I am certain that the coil whine is coming from the graphics card because when I put my ear close to the card it's the loudest then. What I am using to test is Witcher 3 menu screen as menu screens is where the loudest coil whine occurs.

Setup is:

  • Mobo: Gigabyte Z68XP UD4
  • CPU: i7 2600K overclocked to 4.0Ghz
  • GFX: 290x/1080 GTX
  • Ram: 8gb Corsair
  • PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 750W

Here are some scenarios where I still got coil whine.

  • Use my brothers 970 GTX in my system: Coil whine
  • Use my brother's PSU EVGA Supernova G2 750W (we have the same) + 1080 GTX: Coil whine
  • Swapped Motherboard out for P67A: Coil whine
  • Used Old AMD 5870: Coil Whine

Funnily enough after all this annoying stuff when I plugged the 290x back in, for the first time, I heard coil whine coming from it too.

Any ideas? I was dead set that it was the 1080 GTX but once I did more testing I'm not 100% sure anymore and I don't want to send it to Taiwan when all along it was the PSU.

What FPS does the card hit in the Witcher menu? Almost all cards will produce coil whine if they are running 300 fps+, just they will do it to differing degrees.
It is very possible that the card had no whine in the other system and it does in yours, that happens in our test machines as well, no sound when we test it, but the customer hears it in their system.

Well I even get it during gameplay too. I have to turn Vsync on for it to be bearable.

You may want to see if it is related to any other electronic devices in the system or in the case itself. It helps that you have access to two of the same PSU. If you can try to test just the motherboard, card and PSU out of the case and on a non-conductive surface (wood table or flat sheet of cardboard) and remove any extra fans, lights, and power any water pump/s externally (if possible with the other PSU or air cool the system) and test the cards and the PSUs to try to narrow down if any other devices are helping to make it louder. I have seen cases where the card had coil whine and it was due to a single fan in the case not grounding properly and feeding noise back to the ground pin of the PWM header. We can certain get any EVGA items replaced for you, but as AU to Taiwan shipping would be expensive, we would try to narrow it down as best as possible before doing any replacements

Is it okay if I do that with my brother's setup? His case is already open and pretty much dismantled and it runs on air so I'll disconnect most things and I'll run the 1080 GTX, 970 GTX and the 290x in Witcher with gameplay included. Only fan that will be connected is the one on the CPU heatsink. Is that fine?

*edit* speaking of fans, I did install a Grid+ fan controller only last week. Do you think that could be the culprit?

You can try with your brother's system, you may be able to narrow down the issues with that alone.
I have seen fan controllers sending electronic noise into the case, especially if the fan controller is touching any metal. I would recommend testing with it disconnected.

I'll test my brother's PC tomorrow however I tried disconnecting the power and usb connection to the Grid+ (while the computer was on) and then I launched Witcher to go play in game and the coil whine is still there on the 970.

Okay so I've done the following tests:

    Cardboard setup:

    CPU: 3930K
    MOBO: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
    RAM: 2 x 4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3
HDD and SSD were also connected.
    Monitor was a 144hz monitor.

    Tests:
    EVGA Supernova G2 750W #1

    • 1080 GTX = Coil Whine even with Vsync on in Witcher 3 game play
    • 970 GTX = Coil Whine even with Vsync on in Witcher 3 game play
    • 290x  = Barely noticeable coil whine. Seems like I thought it had no whine but it was probably masked by my loud pump until I tested it today.

    EVGA Supernova G2 750W #2
    • 1080 GTX = Coil Whine even with Vsync on in Witcher 3 game play
    • 970 GTX = Coil Whine even with Vsync on in Witcher 3 game play
    • 290x  = Barely noticeable coil whine. Seems like I thought it had no whine but it was probably masked by my loud pump until I tested it today.

What else is there left to do? I want to try another PSU because I've been reading around and other people have had similar issues with the G2 but I don't want to go any buy a brand new PSU (and I don't have friends here in this city as I recently moved here)

Don't you have a second spot on that G2 for the VGA connection? Could you try a different slot on the PSU and see if that helps? I have heard the power fluctuations for a PSU that is struggling could cause that.
