Hi

This morning everything fine with the computer and then a couple of hours later the most horrid smell emanating from the computer.  Quick look in Speccy at temperatures and everything was great. GPU the hottest in the 40's, recently re-pasted and cleaned.

So off with the power and in for a hunt around, and the PSU was hot to the touch and when opened the smell seemed stronger from that than anywhere else in the case. It is the original PSU from 2009 when the system was built (700w OCZ)

I have noticed recently that network transfers into the machine causes the mouse to stutter for the past few weeks but it was one of those things that I thought would investigate when time allowed.
Have had a check around the rest of the components and cannot see anything amiss and all the resisters I can get at are cold to the touch, yes there is some smell but that I think is to be expected given the smell from the PSU.

Am I on the right track, or should I be looking at a new computer. Personally would rather not as it still does everything I want it to and it boots in seconds (SSD drive).

Looking at the EVGA Supernova G3-550W or EVGA Supernova G2-650W both on Amazon for £85

Thanks
Paul

IMHO, start with at least an 850W psu and don't waste any time with anything under that. Never ever skimp on your psu which will provide room to grow depending on your pc needs.

Thanks, not sure I am going to be upgrading the machine in the future.  It is now 8 years old so more like it would be a replacement with lower wattage components in terms of CPU and GPU.

My machines so far doesn't require more than 750W and I think that's because the built's are pretty normal or simple.
    1HDD / 1CDD/1GPU and a couple of FANS.

I think you'll do just fine with a 750W, but better an 850W or higher which hopefully will last for several years.
It's not worth it going with the lower wattage PSU you mentioned in your post, as this might increase chances of damaging your computer or make this unstable.

If you save up a little bit more you could go with either the 750 G series starting around 90$ on amazon.

Thanks the 750w G2 is £120 on Amazon which is over my budget really

Have been on the OuterVison Power Calculator and it has given the following:
    • Load Wattage: 374w
    • Recommended PSU Wattage: 424w
    • Recommended PSU: EVGA 650W G2 Gold 80w @ £85 on Amazon

looks like you would be good to save some cash and go with a 500w, unless you plan to make huge changes when you upgrade, like swapping to sli / xfire and many many more hdd's / ssd's, excessive wattage will leave you outside the efficiency curve of the psu.
