Hi all,

I want to buy M.2 hard drive and i wonder- is my Evga X79 FTW-151-SE-E777-KR will work with that PCIe M.2 Adapter:

link:
https://www.amazon.com/Lycom-DT-120-PCIe-Adapter-Support/dp/B00MYCQP38
?

Also, what is my PCIe version? is it PCie 2.0 or PCIe3.0. cuz i saw HERE that maybe it will not work properly on 2.0.
Thanks!

I've been looking into this for a while myself but for a different mobo. I can't tell you about yours but mine has PCIe 3.0 support and I recently changed my CPU to 4930K which also has PCIe 3.0 lanes. First determine what your CPU supports because PCIe is running directly from the CPU. If you have Ivy Bridge, you should have PCIe 3.0 if the mobo also supports it. If on Sandy Bridge, you will have PCIe 2.0 even if the mobo has 3.0 support.

About the adapter, the general idea is that the adapter will just convert the PCIe slot into an M.2 slot. It does nothing more. So an AHCI or NVMe SSD should appear in the OS but the mobo won't see the NVME in the bios so you won't be able to boot from it. Apparently this can be easily fixed by grabbing your mobo's bios from EVGA and hacking it to add the NVME modules. There are guides to do that. The AHCI drives will work just fine without the hack and you can boot from them but they are just a tiny bit slower than NVME. The main problem with those is that you have only one option and that's the Samsung 950 which is also about to be discontinued from the looks of things. Generally all AHCI M.2 drives are being discontinued so M.2 drives at this point are either NVME or SATA. Which brings me to the question I have not managed to answer yet for myself. Will a SATA M.2 drive be identified by the BIOS using this adapter card? No idea and nobody has been able to give me an answer. Of course the SATA M.2 drive is going to be much slower than AHCI or NVME drive but they are also much more readily available and much cheaper. However, my understanding so far is that the SATA M.2 drives are basically your standard SATA SSD but in a different connector, which means this isn't really compatible with PCIe and therefore, it won't work with this adapter. But again, nobody has confirmed or denied this and I cannot find anything conclusive for x79. We are on the same boat. If you find anything please share with me.

Here it says that my Motheraboard supports PCI Express 3.0 (is it PCIe or it is another slot). But im not sure.
As i said, im going to move to M.2 and not to SSD so i want to achive the best prefotmance and do so by using pure M.2 devices/technology
I also saw that adapter:

ADDONICS ADM2PX4 M2 PCIE SSD PCIE 3.0 4-LANE

So basiclly the question is if i really have support for PCIe 3.0?

Not as a Boot Device, that is you cannot install the OS on it and Boot on from it.
Limitations of the X79 Chipset.
Yes the MB supports PCIe 3.0 Gen3 up to x16 *Based on your CPU.

You cannot as far as I have read here on the Forums.
You need a Chipset of Z97 and Above if I recall.

The problem is that i have the 4930k CPU and i dont think the Z97 or the X99 will fit to this CPU

No it will not, but your CPU Supports Gen3.
Why do you think that an M.2 is Faster or Rather any Better than a SSD Drive?

Because it is. 540mb reading for SSD and 2G(!!) for M.2

Re: Evga X79 FTW-151-SE-E777-KR will work with PCIe M.2 Adapter? 2017/04/15 14:54:42 (permalink)
ok a few things we need to clarify. X79 does not support NVME as a boot device but there are bios hacks out there that will allow you to insert NVME modules to UEFI. People have tried it on ASUS boards and it works, I am assuming there is something similar for EVGA.
Yes, the NVME drives can give you several gigabyes read/write but real world tests such as launching apps and booting windows show almost no improvement over SATA. Unless you regularly move around very large files, I don't see how you could benefit from NVME.

If you cannot get NVME modules with a bios hack and you really need the performance, then look for AHCI M.2 drives. They are basically NVME with an OPROM so old mobos can see them as regular SATA disks, however, once in Windows they are operating as NVME drives. Unfortunately nobody is making those anymore and whatever few you can find on sale are basically the last stock at this point. The Samsung 950 and SM951 are good drives that can do this but expensive and very rare at this point.

So your saying that i need:

1.find NVME module- can you direct me to such solution?

Or

1. find a bios hack for my MB- need direction
2. buy the ACHI M.2 samsung 950
3. buy that M.2 adapter above

But in the end, is this really going to work as operation system drive without problems?

inserting the nvme module to your bios is a hack. So if you don't want to hack anything you need to go with the 950 which is supported by all legacy mobos. In that case you would only need to buy the adapter and the drive.
you can easily find on google how to insert nvme modules to asus x79 boards, not sure if it would apply to evga also though.

in both cases, you would be able to boot any nvme drive.

Or use a standard 250GB or 500GB SSD Drive for your OS Only and the M.2 for everything else.
You can tell Windows 10 where to install apps and store your data.
Same for the most under Windows 7/8 as well.

Sorry it took so long to find this.

Hello, unfortunately that is not possible with X58 motherboard, NVMe booting is not supported unless you are using Z97, X99 or Z170/270

So then they would not work on the X79 Chipset as well, X79 Dark & Classified MBs? (As the OS Boot Device)
I was looking at this one Plextor M8Pe AIC 256GB NVMe PCI-Express 3.0 x4 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) PX-256M8PeY.
Link
Thanks
On X79 it should recognize the PCIe storage device in Windows, but it would not work as a boot device

I agree with everyone here in that I don't believe the X79 will allow the m.2 with a PCIe adapter to be used as a boot device. However to verify that for sure it won't hurt to call EVGA tech support and ask them.
