I'm thinking of setting up an external server for hfm.net so I check my stats and such.
If I use one of the free cloud computing tiers, what Linux distribution and such do you guys recommend? And how exactly does one setup up the link between them? Do I just run a server version of hfm.net on the cloud server?

Thanks in advance,

Ian

So, it  is possible to just run HFM on your system and collect the data, then write it out to a cloud based file share like dropbox or google drive or Microsoft one drive.  that will let you pull up the html from any phone and will update as often as you set HFM to pull data from the clients.

A dedicated web server seems a might overkill to me.   I'd just keep it simple.  :)

Unless you want others to see your site or data.
You write the data needed if your location allowed auto uploading and html code. My HFM
a .css file and interlinking .html files. I could never get this to work on Google or One Drive.

I guess my question relates to how do monitor multiple computers with hfm.net

I would like to publish as well. I want a better way to check in remotely than a teamviewer instance to the host computer. And if I add a system I would run out of free teamviewer slots.

    If you look at mine "My HFM" it connects to 7 different computers. {Is this what you mean? }
You connect (Using One HFM Install) using the IP Address of the Computer running the Client Software.
You also need to set the Client Software to Allow this.

Let me know if you want me to post some images of my setup.

Note: P11428 is a Killer 9 Hours on my GTX 1060 3GB Card.

I will let you know. I'll try and set it up Monday afternoon. I can set the free amazon instance to run a windows server version or Linux. The free amounts should be plenty for a basic stats collector.

You just need a file share to the location of the files to transfer or upload to that your webserver can access.
I took some snap shots so I have some images when you are ready if you want them.

I have the server working. Figured out the ssh connection. Got apache and an ftp server and the letsencrypt installed. Figuring out allowing ftp and Web Access is challenging. I think it's something I have to enable in the aws console.

I have HFM running on my system right now. I am attempting to to setup the ftp server on the aws cloud for HFM.net to send the pages via ftp. Not sure I wanna mess with mono framework.
Anyway, I'm out of time this weekend to mess with it. I got apache running and can get to it via port 80. I just need to figure out the ftp configuration and get letsencrypt setup. I can mess around with mono later.

The info was helpful. I'm going to have to figure out the documentation. Tricky part is on using hfm.net on aws side. I have it running Ubuntu 16.04 and need text based input. Next step is pinholing my hardware firewall and selecting port ranges. I wish there was an scftp option so I could use a keypads for security.

In general I try to use the latest version. You can use 14.04 LTS as well. I'm thinking that if I open up a port and restrict it to the IP address of the aws server it can be safe. Right now i am working on getting the basics setup. It's tricky getting time to work on it.
Time Flys and my daughter is coming up on 9 months. We are trying to work in this whole "sleeps in her bed" thing, but she keeps waking up, crying and throwing up big time. Reflux ain't pretty.

I've got it working on my main computer, but my folding rig(Asclepius)  wont connect to HFM. I've got the right IP address.
I've got the same settings on each client. I can remote access my Inwin client to Asclepius, but not the other way around.

What firewall stuff should I be checking?

Have you allowed remote access within the client?  not sure if its needed or not but it won't hurt.  Firewall wise you need to allow hfm net to be able to access both machines
