I think context needs to be put forth on this. The internet has never been a public forum. Every single inch of the internet is a private entity. Whatever those private entities want to do with the data they collect is largely up to them. It's your choice to use or avoid various places on the internet based on particular site privacy policies. People have been under the misconception that the internet is free and public. We all should know better than that. It's private businesses accommodating internet users on their terms. The internet isn't and never will be e-Utopia. It's naive to believe it would be when corporate entities are what run it.

We should have some degree of privacy online. We shouldn't allowed ISP's or anyone running tracking software to sell every bit of information they collect. Facebook is pushing hard to track users and non-users around the net. I bet some companies would love to get a hold of information about current and future employee's.

I remember some ISP's offering special offers on packages, if you used it's browser plugin, the internet package would be lower.

You can block advertisers tracking you, even block facebook tracking non-users around the net with browser addons.

Yep I used to use some of these back in the dial-up days - such as Netzero, Juno, BlueLight interenet.  Actually could get X amount of hours of free internet in exchange for the ads being displayed either in the client or the browser add-on.

At least give us the choice to run use ad-blocks, no- scripts of our choosing and tracking cookies, it should be pur choice. It's gotten worse, "please enable ur cookies" click refuse, and never go back to said site....

the new rule only went to effect a few few months before 1-21-17, before that they were able to sell your tracking info to advertisers, how do you think google and all its free services got to be the giant it is?  or search engines or other sites know what you are looking for? its not magic. here is the thing though, everyone of these companies will tell you in legal speak they are doing this via the TOS that 99% of people dont read.

To me, the worst thing that will happen for now is maybe there will be more advertisements. I can't see who would sort through all that data and who would actually care what all the millions of people do unless it is illegal. To play devils advocate, I could see the far side of things... Maybe some day the Government may watch who is buying ammo or logging onto prepper websites and decide that those people are "extremists" Hard to say.
For the most part, I am not worried.

That is already done at the fusion centers they've set up. Pre-crime is coming.

I agree with you that the internet has never been "private", however, net neutrality goes deeper than the desire to be anonymous.  If you want to be anonymous, use a VPN, however that is no guarantee of anonymity.  Believe it or not, there was a time when your ISP didn't track every little move you made, hoping to capitalize on some AD revenue.  Sadly those days are gone though.
