Can you remove the matte coating on the evga sc17 with a hair dryer? I really like the laptop but absolutely hate matte coatings.

You can, but it would void your warranty more than likely.

As much as I can respect your distaste for matte coatings, unfortunately I can confirm altering the unit in this way would void the warranty.
 
I can't discuss the feasibility of this mod (obviously) but I thought I would let you know that this is the case. Good luck

Yes I am aware of the warranty voiding aspect of it. I just really want to know if it is possible since I don't know if the matte coating is baked into the LCD itself or just a film that was added on top that can be removed. I know the lenovo y700 laptop as well as some laptops and many monitors in the past you could just remove the coating that way.

No one associated with Evga can answer that for obvious reasons. Staff, Mods, etc. (Just wanted to post this)

Unless you are well off why would you want to do something like this? It could turn out very expensive if the LCD develops a fault or any other component for that matter. I'd recommend getting an external monitor instead if your that bothered.
 
 

Why would you do that?  So much people complain about glossy monitors and displays, because they reflect the light, which can be pretty annoying and you want to remove the matte coating?

Once someone does it and documents it, there will be information online. Until then, you could be the person who voids their warranty, makes a mistake and breaks their screen, but provides all the information online necessary for other people to follow. Either be the leader or patiently follow; there is no need to bump this thread in the meantime.

having been in a similar situation as the OP, and having researched this particular issue on a number of occasions, the conclusion I reached was simply replacing/swapping out the default panel(s) (having done just that on a few different laptops). I too truly dislike the whole 'matte' or 'anti-reflective' trend ....and the justifications why it is even needed. Truly unfortunate that this 'matte' trend has all but completely stopped many laptop manufacturers from offering a 'glossy' option, as ...for those of us who don't even use a laptop outside and/or don't mind adjusting the viewing angle etc, a glossy panel offers more brilliant vivid colors, contrast and sharpness. I have found that, once you find out the proper options for a replacement panel (for your specific laptop model), swapping out is fairly simple (popping off the bezel, plugging in a small 30 or 40 pin plug connector) ...and the replacement glossy panel offerings are easily available on ebay and amazon at a fairly cheap price.
